Lost Easter Eggs

Essentially,  what happens in the beginning of the episode is a huge love letter to the fans; a pay-off of information and titillation that exceeds anything LOST has done before, yet you would have to be a fan to experience the joy.  A lot of fans out there who have heard the rough layout of the episode have expressed some dismay over what follows the beginning,  don’t worry;  the opening scene is enough to make the summer wait worth it and then some.  They could have run a test pattern for the rest of the episode and I STILL would be sitting here recovering from the ecstasy.

Lost returns for its third season the same way it has opened every season, with an opening eye.  As a metaphor, it means “pay attention” – open your eyes, and watch… mysterious things are about to happen and if you want to understand, you’ll need to be vigilant.

In this case it is the viridian eye of Juliet, a beautiful blonde woman in her mid-thirties.  She pops in a CD and lines herself up in front of her mirror.  She tests a tenuous smile that ripples against a deeply troubled countenance.   There is a sad desperation here, this is a woman who has surrendered and is just trying to make the best of things.   You can see that she has done this ritual before,  humming to her favorite song (“Downtown” by Petula Clark, composed by Tony Hatch), teetering between the despair and a mind-space of resolved content.  Finally, the smile wins out and she is ready to start her day.

We see Juliet arranging chairs, preparing her living room for some kind of meeting, when a beeping summons her to the kitchen where an oven is beginning to spew smoke.  She rushes to get her muffins out of the oven and burns herself in the process.  The doorbell rings and it is an elderly woman.  The legs of a man jut from the opening to a crawl space just to the side.  She chides him indirectly by asking Juliet about the plumbing.

Just another LOST book Club

It turns out what is going on is a book club.  They are discussing “Carrie” by Stephen King, although the title of the book and its author are never spoken aloud.   One particular visitor, Adam, objects to the book saying it has no metaphor and is science fiction and religious hokum pokum.  He argues that ‘Ben’ would have never read such a book, as if arguing from the tastes of this absent person should strengthen his own argument.  Juliet not only does not care what Adam thinks, she doesn’t seem particularly effected by what ‘Ben’ would have thought either.

Suddenly, the earth begins to shake.  It is an earthquake.  They scramble to the doorways until it subsides,  then drift outside to see what is going on.  We see a community of bisque bungalows amongst well tended lawns, barbecues, lawn furniture, paths leading to a gazebo.
Just another LOST book Club

It is ideal, sunny, warm.

Immediately, some familiar faces show up.  It was Ethan under the house  working on the plumbing, and we see the man who claimed to be ‘Henry Gale’ emerge from a bungalow and join in the confusion ensuing outside.  They gather in the open and their attentions are swept upwards towards a howling overhead.   We see a plane, Oceanic 815, as it breaks up.  There is little doubt that this seemingly modern, clean cut community is actually on the ISLAND!
Just another LOST book Club

Ben (formerly Henry Gale) gathers Ethan and Goodwin and quickly instructs them to go to the crash sites and blend in with the survivors.  He asks for lists to be made in three days,  as if the nature and practice of composing a list is something they have done before and have an immediate understanding of what is required.   They set off running.   If Ben is a good judge of distance, and Goodwin is a fairly athletic dude, the Tailie camp is about  10-12 miles from the other’s little village.

Ben approaches Juliet, glances at the Stephen King book clenched in her hands and says “So, I guess I’m out of the book club.”  Clearly, Ben is not a Stephen King fan.

The camera backs away in cuts that reveal the area surrounding the others camp.  It appears to be situated in the middle of what may be an impact crater!

Just another LOST book Club

All in all, an exhilarating and unexpected introduction to the others that deepens the mystery even more by showing us their seemingly mundane, faux suburbanite lifestyles.  Book clubs? Barbeques? Bisque color schemes? Stephen King?  What does all this have to do with stealing babies and turning people’s heads around the wrong way?

Also of interest is the fact that to these others, Adam at least, the idea of psychic powers is “science fiction” and “hokum pokum”.  This seems to be against the grain of what we know about the seemingly supernatural others from the seasons of the past.  Again, LOST has opened another season in a way which throws our sense of equilibrium to the story completely askew.  It is clear we have a lot to learn about these people.

The rest of the episode is gives us the update on what is going on with Jack,  Kate, and Sawyer in the wake of being captured by the others.  The flashbacks are Jack centric and the theme seems to be Jack’s inability to let go and accept things that are beyond his control.

The entire flashback chronicles Jack’s attempt to find out who the man is that Sarah left Jack for and the obsession that develops from this quest.  Ultimately,  he becomes suspicious that his

father is having an affair with his wife when he discovers she had called his dad’s cell phone.  The elder Dr. Shephard offers a reasonable explanation for this but Jack is convinced otherwise and decides to follow him.  He winds up busting in on an AA meeting and attacking his father, which lands young Dr. Shaphard in the clink.  Sarah shows up to bail him out, informing him that the incident caused Jack’s father to fall off the wagon and start drinking again.  When he leaves the jail,  he catches a glimpse of the man Sarah was with all along, it is not his father.  Jack demands his name.  That is his sole focus in life,  he wants to know the name of the man that can give her what he can’t.  Sarah still refuses.

In the real time part of the program,  Jack is being held in what appears to be an aquarium.  There is an intercom that apparently doesn’t work.  Juliet comes and talks to him, asks him what he does for a living, where he is from, etc.  He responds with totally false information.   She wants to bring him food but he refuses.  She will not give him any more information until he begins to cooperate.  At one point,  Jack here’s his father say “Let it go jack”  through the intercom.  Juliet says this is not possible, since the intercom doesn’t work.

Kate wakes up in a locker room with Mr. Friendly looking over her.  He tells her to take a shower.  She discovers she has been injected with something or had blood drawn.

Sawyer is being held in a cage in the jungle,  across from him is another individual in a cage.  We later learn his name is Carl.

Just another LOST book Club

Kate finds out her clothes have been taken and a dress has been left in its place.  She puts it on and Mr. Friendly takes her down to the beach for breakfast with Ben.  Ben has her put handcuffs on herself .  Kate wants to know why Ben has given her a nice dress,  and prepared such a nice breakfast.  Ben tells her he wants to give her a good memory to hang onto, because the next few weeks are going to be very hard.

Most of Sawyer’s time in the cage is spent trying to figure out the series of mechanisms inside that dispense food.  At one point Carl asks him about the people at his camp,  what they are like.  He is obviously one of them, but why is he imprisoned?  Carl escapes and lets Sawyer free,  but he is quickly captured and brought back.
Just another LOST book Club

Jack tricks Juliet by agreeing to allow her in with food.  Once inside he puts her in a choke.  He approaches an airlock like door and proceeds to open it despite Juliet’s warnings. Ben shows up to punctuate the warning,  telling him if he opens the door they will die.  He does not listen and when he opens the door the room is flooded with water.  They escape into another room and Jack activates the drainage pump only to be knocked unconscious, in one punch, by Juliet.

Kate is brought to the cage formerly occupied by the other “Carl”,  she is relieved to see Sawyer who shares some of the bear snacks with her he earned by mastering the mechanisms in the cage.

Just another LOST book Club

The episode ends with Jack’s theme of not being able to let go and accept coming full circle.  His will is weakened by the fact that Juliet knows everything about him.  She even has records, up to his father’s autopsy report, and more shocking, she knows the fate of Sarah.  With his weakened will, Jack finally gives up both on his obsession with the name of Sarah’s choice, and his resistance to Juliet.

Juliet took a Talking Heads CD off of the shelf and put it in the CD player, yet the song was Petula Clark's "Downtown".

I could have sworn it was Henry (Ben) whose eye they showed opening in the very first shot.

You thought that was "a pay-off of information and titillation that exceeds anything LOST has done before..." ?? Typically Lost BS. Nothing new just throw a tinsey tiny bit of info out and everone poops themselves. I am so done with this crappy show.

How is it possible that Rousseau's been on the island for 20 years and never found a freakin huge urban housing development??

Rousseau didn't find it because its probably in the dark territory or whatever, and she doesnt go looking for the others especially after they stole her daughter.

LOST: I totally agree! How could Rousseau miss this? 16+ years and she never made it over to that side of the island? Okay- it's one of two things: 1. the "island" isn't what we imagined and have made maps of...and perhaps it's not an island at all, but just a part or a country/continent? 2. Rousseau knows everything, and is "him"...maybe she's really the man in charge!

I think its rather easy for Rouseau not to find the urban community in sixteen years, for starters I'm betting the others have people watching the border of their community(some people call them senteries or sentinels, my personal favorite) which mainly sits between two rather ominouns mountains, and yet also extends down to the beach as well, where our good friends are being kept, although much like our losties I bet they attempt to keep alll detainees away from the gneral populous. As funny as it might be I don't think they'd want Sawyer popping in on the local book club unnannounced. Also who said the island is such and such size, Rouseau also didn't know about the medical hatch, which was hidden, or the crash of the entire plane, fusleage or tail. By the way she had to kill all her friends and her child was taken and she's been leaving in isolation for SIXTEEN YEARS, so my guess is that she might have a few bolts loose. oh and there's another thing called the suspension of disbelief, which is something you shold retain for all movies, tv shows, plays, and works of fiction. I mean you might as well ask how did George Lucas write about a galaxy far, far away, I mean what you thought he went there and hung out with Chewbaca.

Seondly why take the time to go on an unnofficial blog to condemn a show that is Awesome. But yea last night was incredible, every second of it for those fans that don't see the beauty of how and what we are told in each episode since the pilot, change the channel. Lost is one of the best serialized stories ever, and the fact that it is on network tv and still reminas to keep its artistic nature makes it even better,
Thank you, namaste,
And Don't Tell Lost What It Can't Do?

I think they were reading THE STAND, not CARRIE

Now I know why Fenry/Ben asked Locke if they had any "Stephen King" while being held in the armory, lol.

I thought the book was Carrie too, but the Stand also has huge religous themes... What I find odd is that Carrie is about pyrokinesis -- that other guy (forget his name) called it a bunch of hokum -- Now, I thought DHARMA was involved in studying the metaphysical? Hmmm. Are they still involved with Dharma/Hanso? I am confused?

In any case, the first 3 minutes were the best part of the episode!

I loved this episode. What we really found out was:
1. The "Others" are there by choice.
2. They are well connected to the outside world - look at all of the information they got on Jack. The glow in the dark map alludes to an island computer network and the cable that was discovered in season 1 is most likely telecom related.
3. It appears that they have access to up to date technology. The video camera that was in the hydra focused on Jack was very modern.
4. The survivors never had a chance against them. When Mr. Friendly said it was his island, he wasn't kidding.
5. The Others obviously knew about the button pushing in the Swan, and let Desmond rot down there for years.
6. They probably have video and other types of surveillance throughout the island.
7. I would suspect that Michael's electronic chat with his son was not with his son at all. The others had video surveillance inside the Swan (via the pearl) and knew when Michael was alone and at or near the computer.
8. We saw 2 new substations - the hydra, and the zoological area. The logo looked from a distance like it was a monkey.
9. The last episode of season 2 referred to a ferry, and the dock where Jack and, Kate and Sawyer were tied up on had a ferry sign on it. Ferry to where?
10. The boat that Michael left on was small and could not withstand a long voyage or rough seas, and didn't have that kind of fuel capacity. Obviously there is civilization fairly close by.
11. It would appear that the Others' compound is well protected between mountains, and is probably accessible only via the beach and through tunnels that are hidden.
12. My guess is that Carl is a plant. I thought I caught a glimpse of him in the opening scene. My guess is that the escape attempt was staged to let him know that escape was impossible and that there would be serious punishment as a result.
13. I am leaning toward the belief that Ben/Henry might have allowed himself to be caught intentionally in order to gather more information on the survivors and find out who the "good people" were.

i also thought it was a talking heads CD. "speaking in tongues" to be exact.

how was it decided that the stephen king book was "Carrie"? i also thought it could be "The Stand" or even "The Shining," as it deals with isolation.

as for Ben saying he wasn't in the book club, i didn't take that as him not liking Stephen King but as Juliette snubbing Ben and not inviting him.

Ben absolutely got caught on purpose. The clincher is that he was wearing sneakers when he got caught. If he had actually been on a stealth mission to get Locke, as he claimed, he would have been barefoot. His motives are still up in the air, and I'm not entirely convinced he was there to get information on who is "good" and "bad". After all, he had no contact with Kate or Sawyer, and yet they were chosen.

I think that DHARMA was absorbed into the Others some time in the early 90's. While the occupants of all the other stations were either killed or "inducted", Kelvin and Radzynski had to be left in the Swan to push the button. I think there have been people on the island continuously for a long, long time. People who don't procreate, but initiate others into their ranks. Still creepy.

We only saw ONE station last night...someone said two, but the Hydra is the zoological station. You can see the same multi-headed Dharma logo (the Hydra) in the chamber that Jack is in when trying to escape as you do when they show Sawyer...it is also clear the Jack is not far from Sawyer since Juliet was interacting with both of them at some point.

One thing that I thought was an error was the picture posted above that shows the wide shot of the "Other's" neighborhood...it shows the tailsection of the plane burning on the beach...when it actually fell in the water. We know this is the tailsection because the episode showed that part breakoff and fall to the ground before the fuselage that crossed the island to a different beach. It is no big deal but if I caught it then they should have.

I have HDTV and DVR....the book was CLEARLY "Carrie"...no point in discussing the possibility of it being something else. Maybe they consider the book "Hokum" because all their work is grounded in real science.

OK, I've rambled long enough.

I really really hope that this episode will later be seen as a whole and not as an individual because it was horrible.. there was nothing interesting apart the pre-LOST part, I've got to admit it was terrific! I really hope they add more to wherever in the world the captured are.. seems like those "others" scenes are going to be terrible.. previeus for ep 2 seemed alright I'm looking forward for a fight between castaways and others, we saw what appeared to be Michael falling down of a boat, I believe and hope it was him. COME ON LOST!!

I have a feeling the mysterious healing power of the island is stronger than what people think. Something tells me the island stops aging and acts like a fountain of youth. It would explain why the others covet the island so much and also why they try taking kids. It’s my guess that the kids and Clare’s unborn baby were not really vaccinated to fight of a virus, but instead vaccinated to counteract the islands power to stop aging. It might have been harmful for their development.

The Swan Station's purpose is still a mystery. The only thing I can think of is the magnitic field might have served the purpose of hiding the island from the outside people that detected the disturbance, they were obviously looking for it.

MUSIC IN THE INTRO:

The CD jewel case was Talking Heads, Speaking in Tounges. The music, as you heard, was that Downtown song.... but the actual disc placed into the CD player was a 2005 Dualdisc CD/DVD combo called "Okemah And The Melody Of Riot" by Son Volt. Go ahead and verify it if you'd like, I used my DVR and got the Cat # on the disc.
It's "JN 94743 A" Side 1 is an album, side 2 is a DVD Video. Significance unknown.

What did they do to kate before brought her to the cage with Sawyer? She had obvious rope burns on her wrists and seem emotionally exhausted. Yet, her dress didn't seem dirty, so she wasn't outside or anything. I think they impregnated her. Since they're so obsessed with babies.

The Epi 2 promo showed Sun Falling into the water not Michael

I`m not sure but Juliet really looks a lot like Ms.Withmore, Desmonds girlfriend. If thats the case why is she on the Island? Is there two of them, last time we saw her she was in the "real" world you would guess. Are they clones? What would happen if Desmond met Juliet.

Please, Kate had the handcuffs on and Ben/Henry had her tighen them before he left her to eat. Maybe you should watch it again...

Side by side Juliet and Penelope do not look alike.

Juliet actually pulled out the album 'Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues'. I would have preferred a song off that album over 'Downtown'.

Did anyone else have an issue with ABC selling out and having a commercial every eight minutes? It seemed a but rediculous and a dark mark on an otherwise interesting episode...

I was very excited to see this episode as I am sure many of you were. I love this show so much because it leaves me lost after each episode. I get bored of shows that are predictable. I hate knowing what is going to happen before it happens. With Lost I am always guessing what will be next. No matter how hard I try I cannot figure this thing out.

Yes, the commercials every 8 minutes was SO DAMN ANNOYING. That really pissed me off.

Great review and recap, thanks!

So they have a bit of suburbia on the island?!?

Who was the guy accross from sawyer? Left from an older plane crash? A ruse from the others? Something else?

Chris
http://amateureconblog.blogspot.com/

No, that rectangle in the first picture is just a part of the plane. They signify this with the small vapor treail coming off ot it. Also, there is a similar peace just below it on the other side of the plane. Fuselage garbage. That other picture, however is astounding! I had nev er seen that before!

Who is "Ben"? Has/was he mentioned/appeared in past episodes?

To Elixir and Eflan:

To defend Eflan, Kate simply had the handcuffs on tight--police couldn't use handcuffs if they delivered "cruel and unusual" (i.e. horrible scratching)injury to someone simply sitting around with them on (and her pair looked pretty new to boot, not rusty and rough or something). If she was just sitting sipping coffee NO WAY would her wrists have gotten so ripped up. Plus, she was genuinely hungry when Sawyer tossed her the biscuit--that is, she clearly wasn't busy eating while with Henry. Dunno that anything too dramatic happened, but I'd say it's not a bad theory that *something*, some kind of struggle maybe, did before they brought her to the cage.

Ben = Henry Gale.

The guy that Jack & Co had locked up in the armory forever.

I thought that something had happened to Kate, too. When Mr. Friendly mentions something like "they were a bit rough with you, huh?" -- plus, she did seem to be a little traumatized.

I don't know if it was intentional, but it seemed as if Kate turned on her emotional face just after seeing Sawyer. Sympathy vote? Maybe Mr. Friendly threatened her, telling her she would have to make Sawyer think that something had happened to her?

My first thoughts, though, is that they had put her into some kind of fight, or as someone put it a "struggle". Training her to be a fighter, like Ethan? (He had some exceptional strength and power when fighting Jack, and abducting Claire / hanging Charlie in Season 1).

Also, it goes without saying that the Hydra station is the animal testing station. The "bears" (obviously the polar bears) where Sawyer is locked up and The Shark tank (the famous DHARMA shark).

The was Ben gave the instructions at the beginning it was as if this had happened before, so I think the members we see "in town" at the beginning are a motley group of hand selected individuals from various crashes into the island. They are all convinced, but I don't think they are all happy about being there. Also, what are they waiting for? Aren't they supposed to be doing something, not sitting around having book clubs and barbeques?

good to see that the polar bears werent figments of imagination for those that saw them on the island. So what animal do they have that makes that loud noise?? What about the dolphins juliette mentions??? Dolphins are pretty high on the animal intelligence chain?? The puzzles for bears?? what are they teaching these animals to do?? I love Lost!!!

How much did Locke tell Ben(Henry) when they were buddies together? We assume that Juliette was reading all that stuff about Jack out of the folder, but she didn't say anything that we already didn't know and her saying that Jack's ex-wife was happy doesn't mean anything. She seemed to me be a very professional interrogator who was playing Jack for info by acting like she knew more then she really did. For all we know, the folder was filled with more Stephen King. Ben did tell her good job at the end, but for what?

hey guys,

first time here. Um, I haven't read everyones comments so I'll hold on to my own ideas. All I can say is that I'm glad the show's back. I'm not a big TV fan but Lost has blown me away since that brilliant first season. Wednesdays episode was simply amazing and a couple of moments were really touching (Sawyer's humour after Kate returned, and when Sarah tells Jack "now you have something to fix")

aw. I can't wait for next week!

well i have seen all the season of LOST and for your information, you knew that jjabrams also did mision impossible 3, i saw that movie and at the end i was oh!!! my god this thing its is very similar to LOST, you may be no undertand me, but you may notice that the music is the same, the main characters have different expiriences in the hole movie, and in LOST all of you have different theories, but the main one is that you all think that a episode will change all the serie or that you think that they are all dead ande they are now in a thing like limbo or whatever
you may notice that all our theories may not exist
the only one is that it is all real

When they put Kate in the cage, weren't her wrists scraped up? Didn't Mr. Friendly say something about it when he put her in the cage. I wonder is Sawyer stepped in any polar bear poop in the cage.

Re: Rousseau not knowing about the crater. Wasn't the crater mentioned on the map that Sayid stole?

I HATE COMMERCIALS!!!!!!! If all viewers paid $1 per episode to watch the show i wonder if that would cover their "Lost" advertising revenues and we would never have to watch another commercial during Lost again.

Does the plane, as it breaks up, appear to have it's landing gear down? - that doesn't seem to make much sense?

I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I remember the tail section of the plane plus various debris shooting into the water from the offshore direction in the season two premiere. Based on the smoke trails from this episode, doesn't it look like the tail should've fallen into the water from the other direction?

Remember that movie with Jim Carrey - Truman show? hmmm....

I thought the landing gear looked like it was down too... hmmm...

Hey. This is my first post. Was looking at the screenshot of the plane breaking up and it looks like the black smoke following the plane is the "monster". Could just be smoke from the plane but the plane didn't really burst into flames, just ripped apart.

did you all notice that juilette shirt changes. she has a pink tank top on when she is looking into the mirror..but it changes to a purple shirt when she goes to the oven

I think the pink tank was her pajamas. I got the impression the CD was part of a morning ritual.

Everyone seems to assume that Juliet is telling the truth when she is telling Jack how much she knows about him, and that the "file" on him is real. If she were telling lies, it could also explain what happened to Kate. It seems obvious to me that they "roughed" Kate up in order to get the information from her about Jack and Juliet made up the rest (i.e. whether his exwife was "happy"). That's why they are keeping them seperate. "Carl" was clearly EASILY able to escape from his cage, it was all setup so that he could be used to gain Sawyer's trust and probably get information from him later.

I do not believe that this impacts the story at all, but you said Ben was clearly not a Stephen King fan, but, when he was locked in the armory in Season 2, did he not ask for a Stephen King book for entertainment? I remember Sayid's reply was "Our library is not very up to date" or something of the like.

About Juliette faking the whole thing. I thought that that was the case too but think about it...

1.) I don't recall Jack ever mentioning Sarah to Kate or Sawyer
2.) No one knows about Jacks educational history (I mean, he can't have run around and told someone that he graduated from med school a year earlier)
3.) I have a feeling that Juliette knew about Jacks situation, hence her smile when he asked "Is she happy?" as opposed to asking "what's his name?"
4.) Also not Juliettes careful selection of words. Everything she says is directly related to stuff that torments Jack (ex. Mentioning his father etc)

I don't know. That's what I got out of it.

Also why would the "others" decide to bring just those three into their compound? As far as we know, Hurley has a far greater connection to the island

What is odd is that all the details that Juliet pointed out were in the flashback. We saw Jack's office, so his diploma's were on the wall... etc. Only his father's death is not covered in his flashback this time around.

1. With the HYDRA at least now we know where the shark came from in Season 2 that was monitoring Sawyer and Michael.

2. As far as Kate and the cuffs goes- I have to say, I also believe something else happened to her. She seemed dazed and the bruising was much too dark. Also, I do not think she ever ate with Ben/Henry because she accepted the fish biscuit from Sawyer. Either that or a long period of time had gone by since the morning breakfast on the beach.

3. I think they are trying to break each one of them down in a different and VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT WAY.

Jack was left in a darkened room with no information- except what the VERY CALM women was telling him. When he defied her request to sit against the wall, I think they knew he would do that. And that he would open the door. Ben/Henry didn't close the door so that Juliette (or Julie as they were calling her at the beginning of the episode) would die- he did it so that she and Jack could work together to close the door- and Jack would begin to trust Juliette.

Kate was given a shower & new clothes- remember, down in the hatch it was one of the first things she did was shower. I bet they saw that.
He them had her handcuff herself at the table- once again I think they knew that she was a fugitive and had originally come to the island in handcuffs. Also, Zeke pointing out to her that she asked where SAWYER and Jack were...

As for Sawyer, leaving him outside locked up like an animal... forcing him to use logic to get a meager amount of food and water.
And then putting Kate in the cage opposite him. Sawyers weak spot is Kate, and they know it.

I'd also like to say that if the Producers and Writers want us to ever beleive that "The Others" are the good guys.... they have work to do. I think Ben/Henry is an evil bastard. he particularly seems to have enjoyed breaking Jack down.

I wonder what the next few episodes will turn up?

I agree 100% with Lizz. This episode was about setting up the setting and situations that they are going to use to break down Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. And since when has LOST ever been about letting out huge bits of information or the "answers" that everybody wants and complains about?? It makes me sick when people say the show sucks because they didn't answer the question that they expected to be answered. The show isn't there for your neeeds...if you've been watching this long they've obviously done something to keep you interested. Keep watching, they'll keep you interested and answer a few questions and leave you with a million more...that's the best way to keep an audience in suspense and in my humble opinion, loving this damn show!!!! LOST is a complete mindf**k and I love it!!!!

I wonder if Ben and Juliette were lovers once, and then broke up. Possibly because Ben was very controlling. At the beginning Juliette was definetly hiding a depression by playing overly happy songs. Bairly clinging on to her ritual. The simple fact of dropping her muffins, destroyed her happy facade for just a second.. Also bringing up Ben brought up some heavy emotions. The fact that she as a host didn't invite Ben also tells you something. Her look when Ben said to Jack to go ahead and kill Juliette was like a look of disbelief that her ex is so emotionless to her.

Just a wild prediction, but I guess that in season 3 Juliette will finally break free from Bens control. Maybe she will start liking Jack, and help him to escape.

about juliette and ben, um, i don't think so. I have to agree with everything Lizz said.

ben's primary objective was to "break"jack and he could only do this by making jack trust someone. juliette fooled jack on two occasions. the first was when she put her hand on the glass as a signal of trust and friendship, and the second was by working with jack to push the button.

however you never know. maybe we're reading too much into this and you're right.

After the earthquake when Julliette runs from the house, she does not have the book with her. When Ben asks he about the book club, it is in her hands.

I have also heard you can see another car in the background in the episode. (Like in the Goodwin/Ana L fight last season). Knowing how much we pick through the scenes, you would think they wouldn't be so sloppy.

"With his weakened will, Jack finally gives up both on his obsession with the name of Sarah’s choice, and his resistance to Juliet."

My take was that Jack matured. He let go. The most important thing, in his mind, was no longer, "What's his name," but, "Is she happy?"

Which of course, is how it should be. So kudos to Jack and the progress he made.

Only Q I have was, did he reach this more enlightened stage during A Tale of Two Cities, or during his stay on The Island in general?

(strongly feel the former but interested in what you guys think)

Does anyone remember the polar bear? what was the deal with that? or the other treacherous jungle creature that was in the first season. Any thoughts to what the connectino with the Others and that stuff is?

new poster here, hi all ya geeks.
anyway, i have my own theory on the entire concept of the show. my own theory comes from the magnetic elements in the hatch that i noticed as a n electronics and star trek nut. those of you who know about planetary physics know that the earth has a magnetic field around it. there is also magnetic theories that conect to other physics theories about space and time. at the end of "the long con" do you remember hurley and sawyer on the beach?
i think the darmah research group is on the island cuz their stuck there as a result of an accident. i also believe that the "island" as we see it is in a magnetic envelope of some kind, and is isolated thru space time from the rest of the world (in both time and space). the stack of papers that juliet had on jack was not a bluff. they just looked through their history books on him (they probly even know all about him, since they are isolated from his time. besides, everyone on the island is there because they were brought there.) yes, the hatch with the magnetic core was a mind game, but its based on something larger.

the people stuck there do not have the brains (or luck) to get them out of their stuck. they needed these new minds to help them. ben/henry and the sideways naked guy are trying to get out of their stuck, and need the mental assets of the plane crash victims to get out.

or maybe the magnet game wasnt a game, and they broke the bubble? are they still isolated now, or can the rest of the world see them?

like others, i now have more questions than answers, but last season i predicted to my friends that there was an underwater hatch, and i was right. my other prediction was that this season we will see more of the outside current world, because someone is looking for them.

***CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD*** I have heard how season 3 ends from a reliable source who is close to the writers. Apparently the magnetic theme relates to time travel. They are all stuck in the future. They eventually manage to escape by building a DeLorean car out of coconuts and stuff and use the polar bear to jump start it on the beach and it uses big jars of Dharma mayo (low fat) for fuel and sawyer and kate drive it accelerating up to 78 miles an hour but it doesnt work because Hurley has eaten the Flux Capacitor. So the survivors decide to stay and set up a rival book club but ben kills them for a copy of the Harry Potter classic 'Goblet of Fire'. You heard it here first.....

who are the others ? and how did they appear on the island ??

forget what book it was or who did what with whom when and where... the big question is what is the black smoke that can kill? all other qusetions are irrelevant in comparrison.........

rousseau hasn't found alex because they are on a different island, kate did eat the strawberries because sawyer claims this when they kiss, although i am unsure as to why the bruising is so intense, bill tries to kill sawyer because Sun shot his wife and he likes to take it out on sawyer.

the whole reason the people are on this island is because henry, ben, whatever has a tumour on his back and he found out just 2 days before jack arrived on the island the purpose of kate and sawyer is for obvious reasons, for blackmailing jack into doing the opperation on ben, jack is the ideal person for this job because he is a spinal surgeon
when the day eventually comes jack makes a small inscision in ben's liver giving him only an hour to patch up before he dies he then tells kate to run away and interrupts at a crucial time, when sawyer has a gun being held to his head by ben, jack tells kate to run and to call him on the walkie talkie in an hour and re-tell the story he told kate when she was sewing him up in episode one
sawyer knows this is pointless as ben showed him the other island

i feel sawyer is being totally bullied in this series the minute he arrives he's chucked in a cage, then when he goes to press the button for food he ets shocked then that boy uses him as a decoy for his escape then ben pretends to have put a pacemaker inside him which puts him under alot of stress then he loses all hope when he sees they are on a different island

BEST SERIES YET THOUGH!!
