Lost Easter Eggs

In case you didn't know, The Other 48 Days is the story of what was going on with the tail section crew while we were watching the saga that played out on the other side of the island. In contrast to the myriad twists and turns of the fusies, the tailies pretty much had one big situation to deal with; steering clear of the dread "others".

Splash Down!

On day one, our hapless survivors are attacked by the others. Ecko is found standing over the bodies of two "others" with a large rock in his hand, he will not speak to anyone.

Others, fear this man. And his stick.

After another attack, Ana finds a list of the tail section survivors in one of the others pockets. Ana beccomes suspicious that their group has been infiltrated. Her suspect:

Nathan from Canada. A guy who resembles Ethan from Canada.
Is his last name Rom?

After surviving a few more rounds of attacks, the tailies decide to stop leaving the night light on and head into the jungle. It isn't long before Ana turns her suspicion into prosecution and traps Nathan in the pit.

Nathan aint gonna tell Ana why it takes him two hours to go to the bathroom.

The nimble eyed amongst you probably saw the Quarantine sign spray painted on the inside of the arrow bunker. If you didn't, here ya go!

"What the heck is a uarantine?"

Inside the arrow station the tailies found a chest containing a glass eye, a bible, and a short range hand-held radio.

"Look what eye found!"

On the interesting revelations front Ana, who apparently knows a bit about knives, identifys this boar-sticker -- retrieved from one of the others -- as being approximately twenty-years-old. So what was the US Army doing on the island 20 years ago? Or were they there at all?

The low-down: "The Other 48 Days" tries to succeed on a lot of different levels and -- while not as successful as "Abandoned" -- does succeed quite nicely; the most developed aspect being the buildup to Shannon's murder. Your-mileage-may-vary of course, but what the Doc sees here is an excellent dissertation on Ana's descent into a paranoia so profoundly appropriate as to practically justify that hasty shot that took Shannon's life. I say "practically" because at the same time as I was beginning to understand how Ana's tightly wound survival mechanisms came to be I was also beginning to see the underlying faults that will no doubt be at the center of her back story next week. This is clearly a woman driven to protect as an act of penance, what brought her to that place psychologically should be an interesting tale.
