I've gotra admit, I had never seen this until my good buddy, and former TLE co-blogger, Vexingmodstwo pointed it out to me this morning. (Which is just ASKING to be flamed for lack of attention, I KNOW.)The sad reality is, I did not scour the Season Two DVD extras. Mostly because I was pissed off that I didn't get invited to that cool LOST viewing party with all the 'official' types, but hey, I'll survive. (And throw an even better party, JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE!)
None-the-less this item, which is covered extensively at the incomparable Lostpedia.com, has some pretty awesome implications, so for those of you have haven't seen this... congratulations, your as lame as I am! (J/K)
Essentially, this information is derived from Experiment 39, connections, on the extras disk of the LOST season 2 dvd box set. It is a huge map that shows how everyone is connected. Amongst them is a grainy TV screen with a mysterious figure that beckons eerily to the viewer. The people he connects? Jack, Jack's Dad, and Claire.
We can assume from everything we know that Jack and Claire are brother and sister, but who is this mysterious individual and how does he factor into the connection? Fans of the 'haunted' island theory are no doubt chomping at the bit to post their thoughts at this point, but a few elements have emerged since Doc J's 'haunted island' theory that might provide a few more explanations. Most notably, time travel.
Now, SPOILERS AHEAD, There is going to be a changing of power at the others camp involving somebody we don't expect (from my forthcoming Michael Emerson interview to be published tomorrow at BuddyTV.) The wording was that somebody will be deposed and somebody interesting will take their place. We know from the Left Behind description that Kate is double crossed by her own people and left to fend for herself. Could it be that Jack is accepting a leadership role at the 'Others' compound? How could that come about? Could it be from something the others know about Jack from another timeline entirely? Perhaps someone from the future, Aaron, is in charge and thinks highly of uncle jack?
All food for speculation, for sure! For a detailed description of the extra please visit this article at Lostpedia.com.
Comments
Are we sure it's a man? The one connection between Jack, Christian and Claire would have to be Claire's mother...Or maybe they were just implying that there was a connection and didn't have it fleshed out as of yet....

Doc, you sure know how to tease 'em. And publishing on a Wednesday, no less...tomorrow's going to be one decidedly unproductive work day! :) Can't wait to read that interview.

Maybe the Others are living in the future. And the LOSTIES somehow are now living in that future. That the island is some weird time portal "junction" where way-ward stuff gets pulled into. Maybe the bones of the 2 people in the caves are Jack and Kate or something similar. Past vs. Present vs. Future has been a recurring theme since the beginning.
Posted By downthehatch | March 13, 2007 11:11 AM
So the rocks that Jack found on Adam and Eve: does he still have them? and if he does, will he carry them til the day he dies, in a cave, alongside of a woman? And then the loop will start over, with a crash on the island and Jack finding the rocks again, just not recognizing that they're his bones he's seeing?
circular reference. It's not allowed in Microsoft Excel but I guess it's okay for theorists...:)

One the same DVD extra there is an unseen connection between Locke and Sawyer. Instead of showing a specific individual (or shadow) it shows the clip from the show where Locke asks James why he chose 'Sawyer' as a nickname.
Sorry if this has already been pointed out. But I never understood that part of the DVD extra. What does it suggest?
There's also a broken link that only goes to Jack. It's just static because the wire (link) is cut.
Posted By xtremdelt | March 13, 2007 11:21 AM
Xtremdelt-
There's always been speculation that Locke's dad is the man that conned Sawyer's mom, causing Sawyer's father to kill her and then himself. The same man that Sawyer took his name from....

You must be in computers like me!
Posted By thirdflr | March 13, 2007 11:26 AM
Well, if there is a loop, Prez, there must be something else that started it off. Maybe there's a recursive function buried in there somewhere? :)
Posted By Richard Lennox | March 13, 2007 11:31 AM
WOOHOOOO!!! I got props on the Tailsection! Life is good! :-)
Posted By vexingmodstwo | March 13, 2007 11:47 AM
Easy Mr Lennox...Recursive functions require some heavy lifting..Between you, me and 3rdflr, we should start a forum on how Microsoft is behind the Island...:)
Alvar Hanso= Bill Gates... LOL
Posted By El Prez | March 13, 2007 12:00 PM
See, that'd be hilarious if we didn't have to discount so much TLE stuff...because that would obviously make Mittelwerk = Ballmer, and would explain a *lot* not just in terms of the symbol, but the value as well.
But really, I think the island would be more of a System V or BSD 4.x kinda place. DARPA Initiative, anyone? ;P

just a thought, if clair is supposed to jacks sister.....when ana lucia went to oz with jacks dad, and he had had a child with someone over there, and wasnt allowed in the house, wouldnt ana lucia have been like 18-20 years younger at that time?
seems a bit wierd now i think about that. or maybe im totally missing the point again !!

I am still trying to find out how I can get Ana Lucia into my Excel spreadsheet and do the perpetual loop (no pun intend....well then again...yes Pun INTENDED!)

I would like it if Jake takes over for the others, but that would mean Ben would have to die... and that would be a blow to the show. Ben still has alot of secrets, and maybe a back story... It would make me VERY sad to see Ben die. And if Ben does die, then I only have one fav left....John Locke. And I didn't even get to see Ben and Locke get together again! they better give me that convo before they off Ben.. God forbid.

I just noticed i put "jake" well... i was damn close. ::flips off the name Jack::

r, I thought the same thing as you back when Christian & Anna's Adventures Down-under aired and the allegations of Claire being the daughter surfaced. The only conclusion I can make is that Christian wanted to see his grown daughter at that point. So just how old would this make her mother when Christian got her pregnant? Guess we'll have a better idea after this week.
Posted By Richard Lennox | March 13, 2007 12:58 PM
Hey r,
Christian was most likely going to visit his adult daughter, ie. Clare, rather than an infant.
Posted By Bunny Suction | March 13, 2007 1:01 PM
good point both of you, goddamn this show is doing my head in, but i love it :)
Posted By r | March 13, 2007 1:11 PM
Hey Richard, is it Lennox or Linux? :)
That stuff went over my head faster than an Oceanic flight(audience laughter here)
How old is Claire, anyway? Let's say she's 21...Her mom could concievably be 37 at the youngest..The woman Christian accosted at her home looked to be around that age(what I could make out due to the pouring rain and high quality DVR)
But what if the reason the woman flipped out is because Christian, in his drunkeness, had the wrong house?? Which would mean that wasn't Claire's mom and possibly Claire could have a much older mother, more along the age of Christian himself.
I guess we'll get some sort of clue tomorrow night. Hopefully closure.

Wow some of you people need to go back and re-watch these episodes, or at least pay attention when they air. I hate to say it, but some of you are coming up with fantastic claims based purely on fuzzy logic. Treat the show like the Bible, interpretations are abound, but they have to parallel what information we've seen in the actual episodes.
Posted By tanside | March 13, 2007 2:01 PM
Dang Tanside! Did you bring an umbrella along with the rain on our parade?!? :)
Fantastic claims and fuzzy logic = Theories
If we left it to what information we've seen in actual episodes, we may as well watch Survivor.
It's like putting a puzzle together with out seeing the picture that it's based on. Put a theory together, move some pieces around, see if they fit....It's called FUN....
And don't worry..we'll all be onto some other fantastical claims after tomorrow night's episode...
Posted By El Prez | March 13, 2007 2:07 PM
My theory is that Prez will have a new theory that will lead me to reconsider my theory or add to it, while the writers and producers quickly tweak their theories to stay one step ahead of us theorists.
Am I the only person who thinks Desmond could be trying to orchestrate events by influencing the pre Australia to LA flight of 815? Could the mysterious waiver be Dr. Deshatten? Actually I really like Doc's idea that Aaron is waiving to his mom, uncle, and pappy from the future. That has a distinguishing creepiness that makes LOST so wonderfully eerie. It would also begin to answer the question of the others obsession with Aaron.
Posted By cap10tripps | March 13, 2007 3:14 PM
Yeah... ok i'm sorry... i guess i take the theories TOO seriously, i easily get tired of hearing some that are obviously incorrect, usually because the person coming up with them has their facts wrong. My point is that if you are coming up with a theory make sure you know what your talking about, i love Lost, i love reading theories that are really good, but then some people say something like, posted by: r, "just a thought, if clair is supposed to jacks sister.....when ana lucia went to oz with jacks dad, and he had had a child with someone over there, and wasnt allowed in the house, wouldnt ana lucia have been like 18-20 years younger at that time?", where the heck did that come from?? it's so out of context to the continuity of that particular episode. i just figure if your making these character assumptions you shouldn't be coming up with actual theories, which is where my use of the term "fuzzy logic" came in, the ideas some poster's come up with would be better if they weren't trying to remember something that happened a long time ago, and now are unsure of the facts = fuzzy logic. As for you El Prez, and Bunny Suction, i can tell you two at least know what you're actually talking about, and indeed pay attention to the show to help come up with some fantastic theories that could actually play out within the shows world. i'm not trying to diss anyone, just trying to help people in their search for clues in the world of Lost.

By the way, I don't know if Jack taking over would be such a surprise. Wouldn't it be a real kick if Ben wanted to groom Locke as his successor? Then we could see a group (Juliet at the helm) that favors Jack, and then a possible man of science vs. man of faith showdown.
Posted By cap10tripps | March 13, 2007 3:36 PM
Great point about Jack taking the rocks Prez. Could Des be trying to end this loop?
Posted By cap10tripps | March 13, 2007 3:42 PM
The episode description states that Kate is left to fend for herself in the jungle "with Juliet"... I'm guessing then that Juliet is the one who is deposed, Jack isn't allowed to leave because he promised to take care of Ben until he is better, and Locke will be the one who betrays Kate and becomes an Other... Let's face it, he's been heading on this course for quite some time (especially if in the previous episode, Ben promises "to reveal some of the island's secrets to Locke").
Just a thought...
Posted By a_fish_called_dharma | March 13, 2007 4:19 PM
Whoa, in The Man From Talahasee it says locke will be given answers if he pulls back his attack. What if Locke becomes the leader?!!
Posted By Oscar | March 13, 2007 5:27 PM
that same person shows up when you link the sawyer-locke connection. So I assume it isn't a real person but just a way to tell us they're connected.
Posted By David Olano | March 13, 2007 5:31 PM
I highly doubt if Jack or anyone we know will emerge as the new leader of the Others. Michael Emerson has been hinting in interviews that there would be a vacuum in the Others' leadership and that we would see powerful and frightening people come in to fill that vacuum. He's mentioned several times that we will see some scary people soon. We have seen how important the "list" is to the Others. They will not replace Ben with someone who is not good enough to be on it. Hmmmm -how can you be scary and good at the same time?
Poor Ben. First he loses Juliet, then his daughter and finally even the power to use his legs. Now he is losing his position and power too. What more can they do to him?
Posted By Lobby | March 13, 2007 6:33 PM
I'm going to get into alternate planes/tangent universes so beware... Is it possible that Jack is short for Jacob? Could he be on a path where he becomes the leader and saves the island, thus saving the world (tattoos)? If this is the case, then if the others discovered he could save and lead them, certain others (who are located in another space and/or time) make sure he gets on the islands (using Des in this case). I've also felt that Des kind of gives Jack the nudge he needs to save Sarah. This may have been very important in the timeline, and perhaps it didn't happen in a tangent universe. This brings us back around to elements of Doc's bad twin theory. I know you're a busy man Arzt, but when can we expect part III of the theory?
Posted By cap10tripps | March 13, 2007 6:55 PM
i just want to say, tanside, you're a fucking asshole. not everything on here is correct, and i get tired sometimes reading bullshit on forums too, but is it ok to make a mistake sometimes??
you fucking loser. fuck off.
Posted By r | March 13, 2007 7:12 PM
Jack could be short for Jacob, especially if it gets misconstrued through time as Jakob, the Russian spelling...And why would he put himself on the list?? nice catch cap10....
I think Des does influence Jack in that stadium..I think the scene where they speak is the second iteration of Des' loop but Jack's first..I like to imagine that Des sat there and listened to Jack bemoan his screw up with Sarah's surgery and Des was sympathetic but not PROPHETIC..he leaves Jack and FAST FORWARD to the scene where Jack tells Des he married Sarah, which ultimately led Jack to breaking up with Sarah, driving his father to drink again and causing him to go to Australia, where Jack boards Oceanic 815...
Also:why would Des need to run stadium steps to prepare for a race around the world on a BOAT? wouldn't he be better off learning to tie knots? I get being in shape and all but why bother? He won't be running anywhere and he doesn't need stamina...unless....he's aware that he's going to be underground at some point and he needs to increase his speed to leave the hatch for 108 minutes at a time...I believe at some loop he explores the island after Inman is gone( I like to think in some instances that Inman lived and took the boat, was captured by the Others, leading them to getting the boat anyway)...
All of this is just fun talk..there's no real reason given on the show that would lead me to that, other than it's fun to speculate....:)

I think that Locke WAS an other, (or a hostile) in a parralel time strand, kinda like desmond, who was on the island, left when he turned the key, and returned to the island via time travel wierdness. Locke might have had the same sort of experience (was ont he island, left via time travel and retunred). Desmonds "dejavu" or fuzzy recolection of events during his time travel off the island after turning the key, could be the same fuzzy recoelctions locke is going thru ON the island.
He does seem to have a connection to the island, was recognized by patchy, and possibly is trying to destroy the dharma isntalations cuz he knows what they are up to cuz he was one of them, or possible was a "hostile" who fought against the others.
Bu then again WHO KNOWS ! Love this showwwwww
Posted By lostycrackcorn | March 13, 2007 7:42 PM
It does really look like Locke will be joining the Others, betraying Kate, possibly killing Sayid in the process. The preview doesn't mention Sayid being with Kate, who is said to be alone in the jungle with Juliet.
This should point to him being captured or killed. He could go off without Kate and escape, but Sayid's not the kind of character to run and save himself, forsaking everyone else.
I love the Locke v. Jack showdown for the leader of the Others theory, but I don't see it happening. Why would this group allow two outsiders to bid for their leadership? Ben will recover, and stay, but I think when this season is said and done, either Locke, Jack, or possibly both, will be full fledged and accepted members of the Others society.
And all this parallel timeline, looping time stuff, I'm not a big fan. I love the speculation and creativity behind it all, don't get me wrong, keep it comin, but I just don't see the whole arc of this show going in that direction. I mean it's one of the most creative mainstream shows ever run, but quite frankly, I think it would be far too intricate and complicated for anyone but the most hardcore fan to understand.

DARPA anyone? (Posted Above)
Yes DARPA. That has been my theory for awhile now.
There was one scientist who did a lot of research with electromagnetics in the 70's, he could control animals with low emissions, he worked for DARPA and when he found out his research was not going to save lives in wars, he quit. DARPA got a lot of bad press and went underground... to the island...as the DHARMA intiative as cover. Hanso funded it because he was previously involved in weapons munitions (Suddenly he wants to save the world and fund DHARMA? No they were testing weapons maybe). And why are there so many Cold War/Soviet Bloc era weapons on the island?

Brent-
He could be...if we're going throw out time loops and other stuff, it would be more reasonable to assume that a lecherous old drunk man had sex with sweet innocent Claire...It's entirely possible..However, if the spoilers websites are to be believed, then no..It's not possible..aftertonight, we'll know!

My man, Caps..Very nice, i like it as always- I must say, it would be VERY interesting if Ben was grooming locke (thats the way i would want it).but, Jack will probably take over the others, Locke will also be accepted (just like locke joined that cult of pot farmers). When Jack does become the leader, Locke will feel very jealous, then we could maybe see a dark side of locke, since i think locke has two sides, one we really havent seen just yet (black and white stones, and the scar is a typical trademark for the bad guy). But this would all mean that Ben would die, and im against that idea, the show needs that man alive, he is the face of the others, without him the creditability of the Others just isnt there. Jack doesnt know enough to be the leader just yet, Ben was born on the island, learned its secrets. That kinda thing takes time.
Posted By Jimyy | March 14, 2007 6:51 AM
Cap10 always throws it down!! 2Y Jim is justified in saying how cool that theory would be..All of Locke's actions to this point have been leading him to the truth about the island...although lately he has been pretty destructive...dare I say, postal? I don't want to offend any USPS workers out there but there seems to be a point in Locke's upcoming future where he is going to start demanding SOMEONE tell him what the eff is going on or he's gonna blow up everything in sight...I like it!!
The dichotoy of Jack vs. Locke has always been interesting..am I the only one who sees the political undertones or am I just feeding into the stereotypical behaviors of Republicans and Democrats? Or is it just Science vs. Faith? I just keep thinking about all of this and it seems like the stem cell research debate is a giant influence on what's going on....
Posted By El Prez | March 14, 2007 7:17 AM
hahaha, funny u said 2Y jim, it wouldnt be the 1st time i heard that. Anyway, I dont think Locke is going to to go postal, i think Ben is going to freely give him his answers, or at least point him in the right direction. I love the idea of jack vs locke, but from a shows stand point, the fact that Jack is the main character, puts locke at a disadvange. Thats the only reason why i wouldnt want that to happen, because something bad may happen to my fav character, John "I just saved us all" Locke. -- side note, i cant wait to see Sayid's face when he sees Jack taking care of a helpless Ben.. the look on his face will be priceless, i would be shocked if Sayid just tied his hair back and went to work right there.
Posted By Jimyy | March 14, 2007 7:27 AM
Its gotta b locke that becomes an other, or maybe sayid or roussou as they were all together and suddenly kate is left alone hmmm.
Also, BRENT we have met aarons father in a season 1 flashback and he looks strangly like ben.
Posted By rob | March 14, 2007 8:08 AM
Locke won't become an other yet because he's flawed. That's why he wasn't on the list right? He's too angry and brash. Ben will tell him something important though.
Posted By Charlie Lesoine | March 14, 2007 11:07 AM
i don't think "left behind" is refering to Kate being "...double crossed by her own people and left to fend for herself"
i think it means (and i surmise this from the latest preview commercial) is that kate is being left behind because jack (thinks he) is going to get off the island.
Posted By kimeee | March 14, 2007 11:56 AM
The showdown could go down like this... Ben knows of his mortality and has picked Locke as the kind of man who could take his place (remember he tells Locke in the swan that he was there for him). He will eventually be told island secrets (since Ben knows Locke must know the secrets if he is to take the helm), and he'll have the knowledge of his eventual "crowning." A seperate group (probably led by Juliet) will get behind Jack (insert Jacob connection here). At first they will all coexist (like right after the crash), but will eventually vie for the lead voice. Locke has some serious authority figure issues, and it seems Jack (tattoos) may have been meant to be a great leader of men. I don't think Locke would be too open about taking orders if this ever did come to fruition (especially if Ben considers Locke his replacement). Just thoughts...
Posted By cap10tripps | March 14, 2007 2:36 PM
May i say that the man with the eye patch and they keep referring to shoot him but because sayid doesn't want him dead. Maybe he is the one that is a leader and the fact they had the chance to shoot him could be the twist
Posted By Climakool | March 14, 2007 3:12 PM
THIS MAY BE A SPOILER FOR SOME!!!
They've signed Lando Calris... err I mean Billy Dee Williams to be in a recurring roll. I believe this will be the beginning of finding out who their leaders really are. On a side note, they've signed the writers of "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" (as well as other episodes, of which I don't know) to an extension through 2010. This may be a hint that JJ and the boys are looking to end it after 6 seasons.

[Billy Dee] Williams will be playing the role of Mr. LaShade in the Lost episode "Exposé" on the 28th March, making a special guest appearance. He will be a recurring character from then on throughout the season as a high ranking 'other' on the hit show
