Over the years I have been writing for the site, it has come to mean a lot for different people. Some love it, some hate it, some come for the news, some come for the perspective, some don’t even come for what I post, they come to talk amongst themselves, maybe they like the drapes, who knows.
What TheTailsection has always meant to me, though, is a place to express. Writers cannot write enough, it is how they polish and develop their craft. Some of you have commented that the writing is what makes the place so distinctive, others have balked at my audacity in even claiming to be a member of the field. The fact is, I never conceived the site to showcase my writing ‘talent,’ it was always my gymnasium when it came to craft. If I nailed it from time to time, cool. If I flopped, oh well. The intended outcome of the experience was achieved: I grew. No amount of praise can convince me the growth wasn’t necessary, and no amount of criticism can erase the fact that the growth took place.
I chose Lost as my topic because I hate TV. Lost is not TV. Lost is a great story. If there was any sense of purpose, it was in spreading that message. Lost does not need pretentious bloggers, comparative literature studies, bulging coffers full of bizarre theories, or galleries full of easter eggs to be considered a great story. It does, however, need this global community to stay elevated. Regardless of what Lost was intended to be in the beginning, it is what we here on the internet have done to challenge the storytellers that has helped the creators achieve the next level. It’s synergy between story and audience on a legendary scale.
The growth of the site really took me by surprise. I never started it as a business, and I never anticipated the volume of traffic I would receive. On the evening of “Lockedown” and the following day, the site received over half a million unique visitors. Far from typical, of course, but testament to the reach and a staggering wake up call that the monster was “alive.”
During The Lost Experience ARG, I started thelostexperience.com, and together with a group of volunteers kept the blog scene up to date. During that time, forum growth peaked at around 25,000 members. Heck, we were even used to release a glyph.
During the hiatus between Season Two and Three, I joined forces with BuddyTV, and as part of that deal pledged the assets of TheTailsection and TheLostExperience to a centralized effort to create a powerful entertainment site that would rip through the multi-author entertainment blog scene like a buzz saw. Fifteen months later, we’ve succeeded.
Sadly, though, it is time to move on and away from BuddyTV into new ventures that are less entertaining, but perhaps a little more supportive from a family perspective. The reason for this change is a combination of life and professional pressures that result in a sense of seemingly endless resentment from the readership and an inability for me to cover all of the bases in my life that are important. More than anything, it is the fact that I have spread myself so thin that I have lost sight of the important matters in my home and health.
Since TheTailsection and TheLostExperience are now inextricably part of BuddyTV, my pull back from that operation means that I will no longer be providing content for TheTailsection often, if at all. The site will continue without me, and I will miss bringing what I hope was found to be a distinct voice to the moniker of “TheTailsection.”

this is really disappointing. i cant say i was loyal from the very beginning, but close enough. and i'll miss your input along with your perspectives on the show with your crazy, but logical theories.
best of wishes wherever life takes you.

Well DocArtz, reading this I am gutted that you're no longer writing for this site. You truly were one of the pivotal members of the LOST community and will be sorely missed.
I wish you well in everything you do in the future and look forward to the odd blog or two from you in the future (I want a review of 4x01 from you!!!)

Dear DocArtz,
This news saddens me, as I can't even imagine what this site will be with out you. Over time I have been visiting this site, It seems I have come to know you as a person, all though we have never spoke at all. Its a real shame to lose your humour and frequent thoughts about Lost. I really hope you succeed with what ever you choose to pursue and you will be really missed by the Tailsection community that has formed.

(also if you are looking for any writers for this site, I would love to offer whatever I can on a regular basis :) )

DocArzt,
I appreciated you home touch to this site. Even though you will no longer support this site, I will hope you will do guest entries now-and-then. I am sorry that the resentment was a factor in your leaving this site.
Best wishes,

I'm sure I echo the sentiments of the majority of TSS' readers with the opinion that Doc Arzt = The Tail Section.
If that is true, then if you take away
Doc Arzt from the equation, TheTailSection is now left with-- well you can do the math.
My best wishes for where ever you go next.

Posted By aximilian | November 3, 2007 1:56 AM
So, you used us? Got donations from us so your poor ass could go to Hawaii for free? Once that was done, you decided to tell us that you're leaving, and not after? Business dealings like this are generally known for a fairly long time, so there's no excuse; you held off writing to us about it for your own greed.
I will be contacting my credit card company about charging back for the donation.
Regards,
Anonymous.

Anon- If I'm not mistaken, he refunded all of the money.
Doc-I agree with you about Lost not being a TV show. Its a story, and to me, its the greatest show of all time because it is not a normal TV show. I would be curious to see, after the story is all said and done, if someone novelizes the story of Lost. I'm sure it will happen, but I think if its done right, the novel could stand on its own as something great.
Posted By james | November 3, 2007 2:19 AM
I guess this is the end of reading this site for me too ... sucks for BuddyTV, though. Losing all these readers.

Hi Doc,
I wake up to this very sad news :( Your site was my inspiration and your friendship and help have been always greatly appreciated.
Family must always come first and I respect your decision. I hope you will still be able to provide us with your inside knowledge and hope to see you contribute in some way to the Lost Fandom.
This is very sad news :(
Good luck with whatever you do in the future Doc, and I'm sure you will be as successful as you were with The Tailsection.
Feel free to drop me an email anytime.
Cheers

Doc, this site was a site that I cold come to understand the basis of Lost. Every Thursday after the show aired, I would come to my computer and check out what you had to say about the show and where it was going to go. I t was interesting to read your "blogs" and yoiur in depth thoeries on the show. I will miss that. Take care and wish the best with everything you do. Thank you
Posted By Brian | November 3, 2007 2:50 AM
OK, you refunded the money, which was noble of you, but I think that people were also looking forward to reading about your trip and seeing pics. Are those EVER coming?

Hello Doc,
I've been reading your site form the very beginning. I don't post comments often.
I came to this site (aside from the obvious LOST content) to specifically read what you had to say, and to read the comments others were posting. I liked it.
I never visited BuddyTV unless by accident, and can't say I'll be bothering to in the future.
It's sad that you won't be posting anymore, and this site will not be the same without you. I doubt I'll come back here much.
Thanks for all the hard work, good luck with what ever comes next for you.
All the best

I'll miss all of your intelligent reviews of Lost, theories, etc. Good luck on whatever you wish to pursue. And like others have had said before me, TheTailsection will not be the same without you. :(
P.S. By the way, I was just wondering if we, those who donated $15, would still get sand from the beach/possibility of heads on stick? Is that still on or is that just gone now that you are leaving? Comment back/email me.

Im very sad to hear you leaving hope it was for good reason, we will take you back if you choose to write again.
P.S does that mean we wont find out what the big story that you gained from going to lost island? Or will you come back here when you are allowed?

Sad to see you go, and good luck with where ever life takes you next!
Posted By S. A. Bonasi | November 3, 2007 9:43 AM
I understanding giving up the site for family reasons, but I don't think anyone expected any more from you than routine updates. Seems to me like you're giving this up because of pressure from us readers. After your trip, our relationship with your site became like a bad marriage - you didn't communicate anything to us, and we resented you for it, even though you may have good reasons for not communicating.
All it would take to keep us happy is honest communication. We enjoy your theories, and we definitely enjoy talking amongst ourselves. Geez, even if you had posted "I don't have anything to say right now" - which you did several times earlier this hiatus, it would have helped. Virtual radio silence was not helpful, especially when you promised a whole lot of updates.
Your site has a following, and it's all people who love the best show to ever be on TV. If we could get back to that purpose, I think everything would be fine. For that reason, you shouldn't leave doc. Take a hiatus, take a sabbatical, but don't leave. We can get along again. This stuff will all go away come February. We're all just LOST junkies who haven't had a fix in a long, long time.

I hold on thinking that you may one day return. There is still years of Lost programming. I believe you like Phish. Well like them you'll be back!!!
Posted By Nolan | November 3, 2007 2:49 PM
Again, I'm not making an issue of the money, I'm sure you are a man of your word and returned it, but you should at least post (ON THIS SITE, so people don't have to search for it) where all the Hawaii info is. An earlier poster was correct when they wrote about lines of communications. Whether people donated $ or not, they deserve the information that was eagerly anticipated and promised. I hope you don't make people wait too much longer for this, and that you use this site as a source of where to find what you wrote.
Posted By Rayray | November 3, 2007 3:43 PM
Well, I just read your posting on top (twice), and I don't think I saw anything about you needing the OK from ABC anywhere, or anything with any idea as to when it will be posted or anything about where to go to find it. I'm kinda dumb, but not THAT dumb. As always Doc, you handle questioning and criticism with such grace and aplomb. So, it's your ball, I guess since we're not playing nicely, you can just take it and go home.
Posted By Rayray | November 3, 2007 4:39 PM
Sorry to hear that you will no longer be writing for The Tailsection. I really enjoyed your speculation, etc on LOST. Thus, I too will be ending my readership of this site. Thanks, good luck.

I dreaded this kind of thing. I've visited this site for longer than two years now on a daily basis, more than daily. On some days, it would almost be hourly. I have enjoyed this site and have loved your insight. But I understand why you're leaving. I've never posted before, but I felt I needed to now. Thanks for all your hard work. and I do think it was him. He's fed up with all the people that constantly complain. You don't like the site, don't visit it. So stop complaining. As he has stated, he can't just release the information. I for one am just happy that he got to go to Hawaii. I think he deserved it for all the hard work he has put into this site. Thanks Doc for everything!
Posted By Bry | November 3, 2007 5:51 PM
ackermaniv,
Interesting observation. However, the doc's name does actually end with a "zt" and the Doc's name hasn't always been capitalized either. Look in the last news post, in the comments section when he posted his name was the same spelling, and all lower case as this one we're referring to.
I do think it's possible to be our Doc, even though it might seem out of character for him to leash out. At the same time, we'll never know because who knows who actually posts what.
Posted By sk8rpro | November 3, 2007 5:54 PM
wow. now that he's out, he's out. he's even giving hell to everyone on the way out ... way to go. I guess it doesn't matter since he's not administrating anymore. Have any of you actually been to the BuddyTV site? It's the worst piece of crap I've ever been to.
Arzt, Artz, Arse ... they're really all the same, aren't they?
Posted By KronosQ | November 3, 2007 5:58 PM
Look at Doc wanting everyone to say "Oh, bye Doc, have a great life and ignore the main reason many of you continued to check this site daily."
I loved all of your theories, but then you got so self-righteous, it's almost better this place died before you got even more pompous. Sorry for ruining a sentimental cop out. The thought of leaving this place didn't occur to you until coming home from your beautiful trip of a lifetime? Blah, at least you admit your an attention whore and you don't want anyone being honest to ruin a goodbye.
See ya, keep theorizing, because it's definitely your strong suit. You worked your ass off with this place, and I lived here for quite some time.
Edit: The good Doc banned my IP for speaking against him. Awwww. Did you ban me from posting, buttercup? Don't want me to get in the way of you reading nothing but blinding applause? Kick rocks.
Posted By haha | November 3, 2007 6:03 PM
You were definitely well respected in the online Lost community Doc, your articles and blogs here and at BuddyTV were always well written and much appreciated. They always made it easy to find front page news articles for the wiki and they were always top quality. Aside from that you were a great guy from what i hear and you will be missed. Best of luck in your future ventures.

Doc I hate to see you go man. You have not only made this site awesome but managed to make the best show on T.V. better for many, including myself. What I find funny is that you provide a free service, and people still bitch when they don't get exactly what they want. I had tons of respect for you before, but I respect you more now. IMO you handled the whole Hawaii situation, which by the way was in no way your fault, with more professionalism than anyone could. I just want you to know a majority of your readership thinks you are nothing short of a great person and will be sorely missed. Best of luck Doc.
Posted By Satchmoe | November 3, 2007 8:06 PM
I can't believe how immature some of you are being. honestly..In the end, it's just a tv show, and Doc is just a good person that wanted to have fun with the best tv show that has ever been, and you have all ruined that for him.

DocArtz,
This is the second website in my favorites, behind myspace. It is my second favorite because of the positive, upbeat, and awesome theories and news that you bring to this site. With out you writing for it I may as well not come to the site anymore. I will give it some time, but I doubt anyone can live up to you. I almost feel as though I know you. I appreciate all that hard work that you have done to bring us the most reliable and trustworthy lost news on the net. I will miss you much sir. It is a sad day for Lost fans everywhere.

Doc this site will definitly not be the same without your fantastic theories. Life sometimes takes us where were not sure we want to go with alot of turbulance along the way. We buckle up, face our demons, and cut our way through the jungles anyway. See you in another life brotha.

Hey Doc. I've only posted here a few times, mostly just lurked, but every time you posted a theory or a spoiler (I don't want to start a debate, but as far as I'm concerned your spoilers are the only safe ones out there), I was always nose-to-computer-screen, analysing the wonderful world of this phenomenon of a show that's brought us all together. I'm very, very sad to see you go, but I think it's selfish to ask you to stay. So thank you for all you've contributed to the community, and for sticking behind your decisions no matter how much shit people fling your way - and I know you've gotten a lot of that in the past few months. Stop by every once in a while just to let us know how you've been, if you can. It sucks that you've hit a bad patch in your life, and I hope for you and your family that things turn around. I know what it's like to have a big website and have too much on your hands to update it, and how people can get towards you when that happens, but I think I speak for most of us when I say we're standing behind you no matter what.
Again, thank you so much, Doc. Theorising is my favorite activity in the world, and you made it more than fun. We'll miss you.

though i am saddened by this, one must do what one must do. u will be missed regardless of what anyone on here says. i certainly enjoyed reading your theories and various writings. i am shocked by this news, but i do not not know u personally. get back to your life if u must. i wish u would keep doing what you've been doing, but again, one must do what one must do. take care, man and know that u've become a big part of the 'Lost' experience for me. i guess i am now forced to enjoy the show without experiencing what it is that u brought to it for me as strange as that may sound. namaste!

I don't only visit this site for the Doc to cure my Lost-itis. I come here just as much to see what (you all)everybody has to say. I can't believe the people who say they won't come back. This is still a great site, and if everybody steps it up and contributes well written theories of their own, this site will remain great. The show is only half way over, or half way begun. It may be a chance for this site to grow. If we don't all post together, then we're all gonna have to post alone!
Posted By thenumbersarebad | November 5, 2007 12:45 AM
Here's an example of what a great guy Doc is: I came into the LOST online world late on in season 2 once I had caught up with current episodes. I remember finding this site and seeing a news piece right on the front page that said Desmond was the flashback character for the finale. I shit bricks - basically, at the time, I viewed FB characters as major spoilers. So I wrote Doc a polite but firm email stating I thought he was wrong to post that on the main page, and that he contributed to ruining the original experience the finale would be to me. He wrote back and identified my name from somewhere far off in a past online universe. We quickly became fast friends and I consider him a truly creative mind. Both he and the website have been a constant source of inspiration and I can't help but feel the LOST online universe is 99% dumber without him being a part of it.
Posted By Dusk | November 5, 2007 2:15 AM
Its a bummer to see you go, love the site. I am always impressed how you managed to keep it updated and interesting, despite no new episodes for so long. I'm sorry people were uncool to you, I never understood it. Anyway, thanks for the great site and good luck.
Posted By matt | November 5, 2007 6:16 AM
Thanks for all the good times and effort you've put forth Doc. Don't sweat the a-holes. I think it really just comes down to the fact that we all need new LOST, NOW!
As for the site, I suppose I'll check it from time to time, but DocArzt contributed 98% of the material, so i don't think we'll be receiving daily updates anymore. Maybe bi-weekly, if we're lucky.

i never understood the animosity toward the Doc. it doesn't make sense. like this guy above...really? you actually took the time to say this? what's wrong with you and your life that you'd go out of your way to type that? sad, internet tough guys.
i think everyone knows that if you don't like what someone has to say DON'T READ IT. why hang around and prove how sad and lonely you are?
anyone who rips this guy because they think they're "more into LOST" than the Doc is really F'in pathetic...like junior high level lame. don't stray too far from your monitor you bad asses, you might have to back up your tough talk.

I still haven't read the whole thread but I find it hard to believe that people would dare "nay say" you........God damned losers! it's easy to to give it the big "I am " from the comfort of your bedroom while Mummy makes you milk and biscuits..........Internet tossers!
Goood bye and God bless Doc, I've thoroughly enjoyed the site over the last few years.

I'm not one of them, but will the people who donated still get sand, face stick photos, and dharma logos?
If you ever feel the need to theorize lost fans are always thinkering with there theorys over at darkufo.blogspot.com I will miss your site, and look forward to the rest of your trip info on buddy TV.

the reason everyone hates dr arzt is because he TAKES HIMSELF 2 SERIOUSLY!!! i'm sorry 2 see him go becuz i respect him as a human being, but the website is not the greatest. he only quit the site becuz he got what he wanted from every1... a free trip 2 hawaii.
doc arzt is a con man.

Doc,
What can I say? You've been a gentelman and a scholar. The few times we've corresponded by email you've been quite helpful. I wish you the best in the future and I know that the trials and tribulations you've faced and continue to face haven't been easy. I wish the best for you, your family and your health. I know someday we'll run into each in the future and I know I'll hear good news from you. Take care of yourself and make sure we have some competent folks that'll take care of us on this website.
Regards,
Higdon

Hey Doc, I've never written a comment before even though I've check here just about everyday. I wanted to add mine because of all the jerks posting here.
You've delivered an incredible fan service, and for that I am very grateful. And there was absolutely no need to return the money people donated, but you did it anyway. You're truly a gentleman and a scholar.
Screw the haters. Ignore them, because fighting them only makes you look bad.
99.9% of us love you Doc! I really do hope to read another post from you at some point.

Aww! I'll miss ya Doc! Take a nice break and come back with lots of fresh theories for the spring!

Doc,
Good Luck with your ventures.
You ran a great site and I know many of my readers visited your site on a daily basis.
Take Care

First of all, I’m sure that most Lost fans looking for info on the internet visit more than one website. They go wherever the info is. I was drawn to thetailsection.com from other websites I visited and it soon became one of the sites I visit regularly, but not exclusively.
Doc has informed visitors to this website that the important info he would collect on his Hawaii trip would be posted on BuddyTV:
12 Oct 2007 at 21:58 - Doc Heads to Oahu and the Tyranny of Account Now UPDATED
“In case you missed the memo, I will be on the island next week for four days. During that time I will be posting a diary of my travel adventures here as well as on BuddyTV.com. The BuddyTV coverage will no doubt be of the most interest since it will contain some 'official' scoops and possibly an interview, or two, or three, or maybe even, yes, five. Who knows.”
There you go. The important info collected will be on BuddyTV. Case closed. Who cares if you don’t like the BuddyTV site. That’s where you will need to go. Accept it.
We all know that Lost producers “release” info in many ways, i.e. Hidden Podcasts, TV Guide exclusive Season 4 Pics, etc. It wouldn’t be unrealistic that ABC has given Doc (on behalf of BuddyTV) info to release… with conditions, since he was “invited” to the set.
God luck to you Doc. I feel your pain of not being able to share the info you know.
However…
Something in you trip to Hawaii timeline bugs me. Maybe you can clarify for me the following:
02 Sep 2007 at 17:16 - DocArzt is Island Bound
“Imagine my surprise when I found out a wedding invite would read Oahu as the location! How long do you think it took me to reply? That's right, I'll be in Oahu in mid-November, traipsing about the island looking for undiscovered hatches.”
19 Sep 2007 at 15:25 - Who Wants to Go to Hawaii With Me?
“I've been invited to the Lost set in November”
09 Oct 2007 at 16:33 - Jeff Jensen Returns - Doc Arzt Departs
“That's right, I'm leaving... for Hawaii! Next Tuesday, the 16th”
From mid-November, to November, to October 16th…
What happened to the wedding you were invited to? Couldn’t you have visited the Lost set at the same time as the wedding? How did a wedding invite turn into a Lost set visit invite?
Was it a Lost wedding you were invited to that somehow changed dates for whatever reasons?
Sincerely,
CanadianBuddy

This is sad news, but I fully respect your decision.
You have a life, and you need to tend to it.
I'm really gonna miss your theories.
Good luck in everything you're doing and will be doing.

The 1st mobisode is now posted with transcript on www.darkufo.blogspot.com and it's a new jackback with his dad!

Well, Doc -- it was a pleasure, an adventure and an experience.
You'll be discussed, debated, revered and maybe even missed :)
Enjoy what's out there...but do try to come back for a visit. The next Dharma Beer is on me.

Doc, you were the reason this site was my number one source for all things Lost because had the right sort of literacy to explain to brilliant lunacy of Lost. You will be missed.
Posted By Sad | November 6, 2007 4:11 PM
No! NO! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T GO!!!!!!!!
Sorry, just being dramatic. But seriously, it's one of the hardest thing I (and I believe everyone here) have to do in my life to see you go, doc. I came to this site almost every single day since season 3. This is my very first and maybe last comment I give here. As the only visitor from Indonesia, SERIOUSLY, I really wish we could meet in another life, brother.

DOCARZT SIGHTING! It says nothing about Lost, in fact it sort of just confirms he won't be writing about Lost, but it is him and judging from the IP not a BuddyTV controlled domain. So, maybe we can nag him into a comeback before season 4! www.docarzt.com

Thanks for everything. This was a great site, and it was always my first & longest stop when looking for the latest & greatest inside news and spoilers about Lost. It is with hesitation that I now remove this site from my bookmarks, but hey all good things must come to an end, right?! This site did, and the show will also.
Thanks & good luck...
Steve

So is anyone actually going to be maintaining this site? Docarzt's contributions were about 95% of this site, with your random other person chiming in every now and then. It would just be nice to get some clarification on whether or not this site is going to stay active, or if it's done for good.
Posted By Steve2 | November 6, 2007 6:32 PM
I'll make a contribution. darkufo has the first mobisode on his site.

A,you're crap, your theories are not that good B, you used people for a free holiday before you left, didn't announce it before because then no one would donate. c) I'm Nickk, or sometimes Willow, and I'm an asswipe.

Bravo Doc! for putting family & health first. I deleted this from favorites once the dang Media ads that now appear on this site totally shut my computer down a month or so ago. Thought I'd peek in and find you're leaving. I thought *you* were TailSection and will be missed. Best wishes in all your future endeavours!

Thanks for everything Doc! It's been fun reading your articles. Hope all goes well with you and your family!
