Lost Easter Eggs
This week's Lost mobisode, written by co-creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, is a terrible tease.  It gets you all pumped up for an exciting reveal and then abruptly ends.  The episode is entitled "The Envelope," and it appears that it could be a deleted scene from the season 3 premiere instead of an original mobisode.  It starts with Juliet preparing for her book club gathering, and after her first guest shows up things take a turn for the cryptic and the mysterious.

Juliet is busy burning her muffins when her friend Amelia, who we saw in "A Tale of Two Cities" and who may or may not be Amelia Earhart, stops by.  Amelia notices that Juliet is distressed and asks if it's about Ben.  She asks Juliet if she invited him, but Juliet says that things have been kind of awkward between them.  Amelia responds with, "Finally told you how he felt, huh?"  However, Juliet insists that he didn't say anything, and that things are merely complicated.

The mobisode takes a turn for the ominous when Juliet states, "I think we're in big trouble.  If I show you something, do you promise not to tell anyone?"  Amelia agrees.  Juliet opens a kitchen drawer and pulls out a large manila envelope.  It's of a size that could easily contain some photos or some documents, but just as she starts to open it the doorbell rings.  The book clubbers are there, and the mobisode ends.

As I mentioned, it's a total tease and leaves us wondering what the heck was in that envelope.  If this is the deleted scene that Elizabeth Mitchell discussed in the commentary for "A Tale of Two Cities," then the envelope contains Ben's x-rays and Juliet is distressed because cancer can occur on the island.

However, if this isn't that deleted scene, then the contents of the envelope remain a mystery.  It could be information on Flight 815 or something else entirely.  I suppose if it's not the x-rays, this mystery may be addressed in season 4.  If it is the x-rays, this mobisode was pretty pointless.  However, any chance to see more of Elizabeth Mitchell works for me, so I'm not complaining.

The only other interesting moment from the mobisode is the confirmation that Ben has feelings for Juliet, but that's not particularly surprising.  I'm more interested in what in the world is in that envelope.  X-rays? Government secrets?  An interior design layout for one of the hatches?  Pictures of the Cloverfield monster? We may never know for sure.

I've been a big defender of these mobisodes but this one really is pointless. Of course it's Ben's X-rays. Nothing more. I think this actually is a deleted scene as well. The stuff about Amelia being Amelia Earhart is kind of cool but it's one of those teasing things we'll never get confirmation on. More annoying than anything.

Don, I would like to think that they were pictures documenting the Cloverfield monster's accelerated growth due to the fish biscuit flavored Slusho! they were feeding it in the Hydra station. But that's just me.

Its the X-ray. This IS a really important "mobisode" because on the island, no one is supposed to get cancer. So, you can see why Juliet is really surprised: Ben, the all knowing guy of the island has cancer. Since the survivors of 815 got there, weird stuff is happening on the island, even for Ben. He gets cancer, he doesn't heal as fast as he would like after the surgery (although faster then normal still), and Locke hears Jacob. So no matter how confident ben looks, he gets surprises too.

if it is the xray, that's why it's not an important mobisode since we already know that ben has the tumor. it really doesn't show us anything new.

I though the last and this mobisode was pretty pointless. Jin having a big spaz was quite fun to watch but really whats the point. The last mobisode better be good and actually mean something.

Sure, we already knew that Ben has (now, had) cancer, but that's not what makes this mobisode so special -- it's that we see Amelia again! Fresh on the heels of the multiple mentions of Amelia Earhart in the Find 815 game, we see the "Amelia" Other yet again. Surely not a mere coincidence. Either the show-runners are totally screwing with us, or they're trying to amp up the Earhart speculation.... My vote is for the latter.

Another thought: Could it be that, while Ben did contract cancer, the Island still provided a cure, in that Dr. Jack fell from the sky and "cured" (successfully operated on) his tumor? I dunno.

I think she has a MacBook Air in the envelope :D

And the person from before, don't talk about cloverfield! It's not out in the UK yet!

Uh, it's important because it implies Ben is in love with Juliet, isn't it?

Exactly right Super Mario. Weird new wrinkle to the Jack/Ben dynamic maybe? Gives Ben another reason to keep Jack/Juliet from escaping.

I think it has to do alot more than with just with what is in the envelope. If it is the x-rays, then is everybody in trouble of getting cancer. Or maybe Juliet finally noticed that the chart Ben had on Juliet's sister said her sister was actually a Male and she has proof Ben is a liar.

Is is just me or does the abc.com site only hae the first 11 mobisodes posted? could anyone liek # 12 for me?

Anyone who has the DVD set for S3 knows, they are indeed the Xrays. Damon and Juliet talk about that deleted scene in their commentary for A Tale of Two Cities and specifically talk about the conversation between Juliet, Amelia and the Xrays. It is the Xrays, it was shot for that show and then cut so that "Ben's Xrays" could be unveiled later on to better effect in the first 6 episode arc. Check it out if you have the box set.
