Lost Easter Eggs
This week's Lost mobisode is rather inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but it is a rather humorous diversion that gives us a little bit of insight into Jin's internal struggles.  This episode is entitled "Jin Has a Temper-Tantrum on the Golf Course," and, yes, it's about Jin flipping his lid after losing a game of island golf. This week's tidbit was written by Drew Goddard, who happens to be one of my favorite Lost scribes due to his wacky sense of humor, which is on full display here.

Jin, Michael, and Hurley are playing a game of golf when Jin misses a very important putt.  He starts ranting and raving in Korean while Michael and Hurley look on in bewilderment, and when Michael attempts to calm him down Jin demands that he not be pitied.  He screams that he just wanted one little thing to go right for him, and also goes off on a tangent about how much he hates the crazy island:

"I hate this horrible island," he screams.  "Why doesn’t anybody understand me?  All I wanted was one moment of happiness!  Why?  Why can’t I be happy?  Who invented this crazy game?  No!  You horrible ball! Why?"

He goes on and on, with my favorite line possibly being, "Please take this handcuff off!  I’m going crazy."  Or maybe my favorite moment is when he tells Michael and Hurley, "You don’t care about me, do you?  Don’t look at me with pity in your eyes.  I’ve beaten men for lesser offenses!"  Michael and Hurley walk away, deciding that a break from golf might be a good idea, while Jin sits down and cries, "I'm so alone.  I'm so alone."

As I write about this I realize that Jin's outburst might sound either scary or depressing, but the way it's played is purely for laughs.  Daniel Dae Kim does a great job here, and I personally liked the chance to see Jin complain about the fact that nobody can understand him.  Being on an island where people don't speak your language and just look at you funny as you try to talk to them would be extremely annoying.  You can definitely feel Jin's bottled up frustration through every moment of this mobisode.

As I said, it's all rather inconsequential and doesn't leave us with big questions like last week's Ethan-centric entry, but that doesn't really matter.  Drew Goddard has crafted a very funny two minutes here. Speaking of Drew Goddard, he also wrote the big monster movie Cloverfield that comes out this Friday. That should be a must-see event for any hardcore Lost fan.

beat it

I agree, I thought this mobisode was quite funny.

I also thought i was funny, we got to see a totally new side of Jin, not to mention his major dislike for that damn cuff on his wrist.

I may be reading too far into it, but I couldn't help thinking of Jin and Sun's fertility issues when seeing his frustrating over being unable to get the ball into the hole.... Granted, he doesn't know that it was his fault, but I couldn't help connecting his frustrations at that moment with their inability to conceive. It also interested me that he and Sun were able to conceive at a time where he was better assimilated to the camp.

frustration*

I think you're missing the point. This mobisode was clearly underscored by the theme of hopeless optomism that runs through all of the mobisodes. Jin clearly believes that his handcuff will be taken off by someone and that his insanity will be cured, as evidenced by the plea to remove his handcuff--"I'm going crazy!" You'll see. You'll see.
