Word has it this gentleman, Ron Perlman, might be joining the cast of LOST as a recurring guest star. Jump through for the spoilers behind the rumor.UPDATE: Ron Perlman is most definitely NOT playing the part of Jacob. It was fun while it lasted, but this rumor is completely false.
So the rumor is that Ron Perlman is going to be playing Jacob. This information comes from a supposed leaked copy of the press release for "The Man Behind the Curtain", which should go live Monday morning.
A lot of people are dismissing this by saying Perlman would be too expensive, or is too busy. In reality, neither is a valid reason. Perlman could be a LOST fan, he is working with Dominic Monaghan on the low budget horror flick 'I Sell the Dead'; it's possible through his association with Dom that he asked for a role and things just came together.
On the other hand, the presumed press release also lists the 'actors' playing the DeGroots. The problem with this, and somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but these 'actors' are actually crew members who have never been credited. I'm pretty sure this is some sort of SAG requirement involving non-actors taking up space on the guest star list. It is a curious thing as, and again please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe M.C. Gainey did not get credit for Beardy for season one, and Francois Chau did not have an on screen credit in 'Orientation' for his Marvin Candle role (a travesty that has since been corrected.)
Either way this will be huge news if it is confirmed Monday. The press release is definitely out there because some ABC affiliates have published the description. If you happen to have access to information that can corroborate this - and I don't mean a copy and paste of the same press release that is going around - please email me.

I love Ron Perlman! That would be a great casting move!

Jesus.
If he's Jacob, I'm gonna do frontflips around my living room.
Or better yet, what if Locke and Sawyer go into the Box and merge into one being...RON EFFING PERLMAN?

My mind's been spinning about this since mid-afternoon Saturday. If it's true, Ben's line about "Him" being unforgiving is damned interesting. I can see Perlman as Jacob being one frightening character...
And then, to think about the stuff Michael Emerson's suggested in interviews about the Others really being the good guys...if scary folks like Ben and Jacob are good...how evil are the real bad guys?
Posted By Richard Lennox | April 22, 2007 1:46 AM
This is funny, because I've always thought Carlton Cuse sorta looks like Ron Perlman.
And I was expecting "Jacob" to be quite old. Perlman looks younger than Michael Emerson.

Great point Lennox...
Perlman is one those underused actors that abound in Hollywood. Everybody knows the face but it's always 'huh?...Ron who?'. I hope he gets the gig & gets the accolade he deserves...man, imagine him as Jacob... He can be endearing but u'd still believe he's capable of & would rip your tongue out without hesitating if u mess with with him...Plus he looks like the russian dude somehow....

Hate to disagree but I do believe that M.C was credited in the first season. I'm thinking in Exodus. Not sure about Chau.
Posted By matt | April 22, 2007 3:57 AM
i was surprised when in ? chau was not credited for his role in the pearl orientation film, i emailed him about this and he replied that he chose to go uncredited to keep his appearence secret to the audience
Posted By jason | April 22, 2007 4:43 AM
Amazing!
if this one comes about i'll be dancing till i can dance no more.
If "him" is as badass and unforgiving as ben lets on he is, then this might just be the gamebreaker.
amazing actor, would be awesome if it comes about.
Posted By Craig | April 22, 2007 4:56 AM
Actually, MC was credited for bearded man I'm pretty sure.
And in Orientation, Francois was credited as Marvin Candle for Marvin Candle. (This was later changed to his actual name)
He was not, however, credited at all in ?.
Eventually, in Enter 77, he was credited as himself.
Posted By nick1025 | April 22, 2007 7:03 AM
Its funny if this is true because Ron Perlman was the first person i thought of when we all first saw the eye pacth guy Mikhail on camera in the pearl station!
I thought for sure then that was Ron Perlman acting as Mikhail then in Catch 22 when we properely meet him i still thought he beared an uncanny ressemblance and now this news as him as a possible Jacob!????
Itll be cool if it is true i can see him playing him with enough intruige yet certain menace at the same time!
Posted By 24Luke | April 22, 2007 7:09 AM
Is it me, or does Ron Pearlman look a little bit like Kelvin? Or at least his pictures on IMDB do..lol
Posted By Herb | April 22, 2007 7:49 AM
MC was indeed credited last season.... as for Perlman that would be very nice.
Posted By vanyvrgs | April 22, 2007 8:56 AM
Gainey was definitely credited in season two, but what about the finale of season one?
Posted By docarzt | April 22, 2007 9:20 AM
I would rather see Ron Perlman as Radzinski and have him and Clancy Brown as Kelvin duke it out in the Swan in a flashback, than have Ron play Jacob.
While Ron is a good actor, I am not sure that he'll be a recurring actor. I don't want Jacob to be a throw away character.
Posted By blackrockbob | April 22, 2007 11:01 AM
Ken Olin was the giveway to me that this was false. He is mostly behind the camera directing. And why would Hellboy need to do a TV Show? That just didn't make any sense.
My paddle is still on the "Jacob isn't real, Ben made him up" side. The second best outcome -- Jacob is a girl! :=)

So it's false, hm? Oh well...would've been great...
Posted By Richard Lennox | April 22, 2007 11:40 AM
Agree with blackrockbob, Radzinsky would be a good part for Perlman to flesh out.
It is suggested by tptb that Jacob is some we have already met.
Posted By TabulaRasa | April 22, 2007 12:54 PM
...except in the most recent podcast, D&C just said that Jacob isn't anybody we've already met. Unless there's some big technicality involving demonic possession, multiple personalities, or something equally left field, Jacob's a face we have yet to meet.
Posted By Richard Lennox | April 22, 2007 1:04 PM
Correction: D&C actually said it's not Billy Dee Williams and side-stepped the question. My mistake, TabulaRasa.
Posted By Richard Lennox | April 22, 2007 1:14 PM
I always thought that Anthony Hopkins would be a brilliant person to play the role of Jacob. Now THAT would be impossible ;).
Posted By Dale | April 22, 2007 1:18 PM
OMG!! I would LOVE Ron to join Lost!!! He is such an amazing actor!! I would be so happy!!
Posted By sarah | April 22, 2007 1:41 PM
I actually confused that myself Richard. In fact what Damon says is "it will be shocking" when we find out who Jacob is, and Carlton is not quite in sync with him and says "it would be shocking" going back to the Billie Dee Williams. So I would say in all, that means Jacob is either someone we've seen before, or not anyone at all. My theory is that Jacob is a Commodore 64 that got evolved into a hideous overmind. C=!
Posted By docarzt | April 22, 2007 3:04 PM
I'd like Jacob to be Cilian Murphy.
I think he's cool as a villain.
but then again...this isn't a debate over who we think should play Jacob.
sorry.
Posted By Taylor | April 22, 2007 3:42 PM
Clancy Brown a.k.a Kelvin's dead, remember? In the last podcast, Cuse & Damon specifically said that when a character's dies than that's that. He/her won't be back in the present so unless Kelvin is Lazerus's brother.....
Posted By JDSalinga | April 23, 2007 12:47 AM
Shame about Ron Perlman ... however I am hoping that it isnt someone we have seen before because unless somebody on lost has two different first names!
On the other hand if someone from the past was to become Jacob then it is probably that leader monk man :D
I dont know his name so maybe somebody could clear this up for me ... cheers guys!
Posted By Gardo | April 23, 2007 3:28 AM
I am beginning the rallying cry: Patrick Mcgoohan as Jacob.
He is old enough, available to work and probably wouldn't be that expensive.
Plus he is a GREAT actor and you get all the Prisoner geek cred.

Remember that the symbols in the Swan meant 'The Underworld'?
Call me crazy, but........
What if Jacob is Satan?
I know that this is WAY out there, but how cool would that be?
Think about it. The island is a 'gateway' to hell. Not pergatory, but an actual place, on the earth, where there is a gateway into hell. Kinda like 'The Exorcist: The Beginning. The place where Satan fell to earth after God threw him out of heaven is the gateway to hell. The Swan was that exact spot. And pushing the button released all the energy/force building up. Besically, Dharma found this, and built the station to prevent hell from entering the world. Keeping the end times from happening. Remember? Desmond's hatch buddy asked Des if he is willing to pull his finger out of the 'damn'. And Damon and Carlton said that they all had no idea how srewed they all are by blowing the hatch. Now, the force holding hell back is gone, and that brings me to my last thought..........
What if the new 'evil threat' to be revealed are demons and fallen angels, escaping from hell? And while battling the Other's and the Losties, the smoke monster is revealed to be the original 'gate keeper' of hell? And we get to watch Smokey pick of the demons? How FREAKIN cool would that be?
I know. I'm crazy.
;)

haha that theory sounds quite good. But the moment i see a little demon or devil person is the moment i stop watching lost forever!
Posted By Gardo | April 24, 2007 5:43 AM
Naw ... the chin is too defined for Ron Perlman, and the voice reminded me of Kris Kristofferson. As does the profile. Run back your TiVo and check it out.

I agree, this is an excellent theory.
Jacob is Lucifer, who is the biblical epitome of daddy issues, which are the biggest running theme in LOST, which is in fact Paradise LOST.
The island is simultaneously the Garden of Eden and the cradle of Hell.
Good and evil.
Black and white.
Biblical names and allusions that run through the series.
Jacob has "recruited" so many other people who similarly have daddy issues because he figures it will be all the easier to seduce them into fighting alongside him in the apocalypse.
Excellent theory.

Here's what would be a very Lost-like move:
Have a relatively unknown actor play an actor playing Jacob.
