I don't know about you, but from the moment Desmond uttered the words "Watch the film" in "Orientation" I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation. From the moment Dr. Marvin Candle introduced himself, and proceeded to explain the 'Dharma Initiative' the LOST universe shifted in a direction that would alter the narrative, look, and feel of the show inextricably. The job of setting that tone went to actor Francois Chau. Like many LOST guest stars, Francois had crossed paths with the LOST creators before on shows like Alias, and Nash Bridges, but in this case it wasn't just a matter of having an in, Fancois was definitely the ONLY man for the job. A little over a year later, Candle and his alter ego Wickmund continue to embody one of LOST's biggest mysteries: who is Dharma, and why do they lie so much? I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview Francois and get some insight on what it feels like to be a LOST icon, where the Marvin Candle story might be going, and more! WARNING: Some very minor spoilers ahead.DocArzt: How did you get the part of Dr. Marvin Candle?
The audition notice was sent out to all the agencies. My agent scheduled a time for me to go in and read for it. I had known April webster, the casting director for years. She had cast me in a bunch of other projects. I went in , did my thing, and thankfully got the part.
Where were the various Candle/Wickmund segments filmed?
The first couple of segments were filmed in Burbank, on the set of "Alias" which was still in production. We came in and shot the segments using the "Alias" crew after they were finished with their stuff. Beginning with the "Wickmund" segment, the rest were shot in Hawaii. I don't think I have to tell you happy I was about this!
Originally Dr. Candle was credited as being played by 'himself'! How did that come about?
This "uncredited" role has turned into something quite unexpected. When an actor is offered a part, the agents and the producers negotiate for the actor's salary and billing. This is pretty routine stuff
.For whatever reason, I guess they couldn’t come to an agreement about my billing, so we decided to go "uncredited". This is also something that is routinely done. This seems to have added to the mystery of "Dr. Candle", so we just kept it this way. I hope this doesn't take away from the romance and mystery of "Dr. Candle".Has becoming this 'Iconic' LOST character had any impact on your public life? Do people approach you seeking that 'Dharma Initiative' connection?
I am amazed at how many people approach me now because they recognize me as "Dr. Candle". Yes, they always ask about the Dharma Initiative and what's going to happen next. It's a worldwide thing. I have been getting lots of letters and e-mail from all over, mostly Europe, but as far away as China, asking for pics and autographs. Even when I'm on the sets of other projects that I'm working on, people are coming up to say, "Oh my God!, you're the Dharma Initiative guy!”
I just read we'll be seeing you on the big screen soon. Care to tell us anything about that?
I have a small part in "The Eye". It's a remake of a Chinese horror film. Jessica Alba is the lead. Another film I finished a while back is "Rescue Dawn" with Christian Bale, and directed by Werner Herzog. Not sure when that will open.
We know that Marvin Candle is going to be seen on the island in Episode 20, was it cool to finally be involved in working with some of the other characters?
Yes, Marvin Candle is on the island. Without giving too much away, I can only say that I have yet to have the chance to work with some of the other characters.
Do you have the sense that there will be more Marvin Candle in the future?
I hope that we will see more of "Dr. Candle" in the future, but I really don't know. It's wide open as far as the character is concerned. It's up to the producers to decide if they want to make him more of a major player. The way it's set up, every fan I've spoken to, thinks that "Dr. Candle" is the head guy behind the Dharma Initiative. Who knows?
One of the great things about candle is he is this very straight, serious sort of guy, just explaining things; yet, he has this eerie quality to him, and when we see he goes by multiple names he becomes ever more suspect. Were they playing off your nuance and presence, or was Candle conceived as 'sort of creepy' from the beginning?
I was never told to play him in any particular way. Like you said, the material is pretty straight forward, so I just added a little layer to him.
The idea that Dr. Candle had a prosthetic arm was in the fan community for a long time before the producers admitted that he did, indeed, have a prosthetic arm. Did you have to play that scene with a fake hand, or is that just good body work from you?
Ah yes! the prosthetic arm! I was just told, " Hey, you've got a fake arm. Can you just do something, but don't make it a big thing." I just have to remember to hold my hand to my side when I'm filming.
So do you watch LOST?
I try to watch when I can, especially the episodes that feature my friend Yunjin.
Without giving anything away, do you think your upcoming LOST episode will hold any surprises as far as Dr. Candle is concerned? Is the Marvin Candles story finished?
Well, without being coy, it's not a surprise to me! I don't think the Marvin Candle story is finished, but that might be just wishful thinking on my part.

Doc another outstanding job. You are the man brother. So what do you think? Jacob???

I'm calling this from the gut. Actor. Seriously. Here is the scene.....
We see Dr. Wickmund delivering his pearl speech but it is in nice pristine film instead of the scratchy 8/16mm. Suddenly somebody yells cut. Next thing we know, Wickmund is arguing with the director.... "I'm an actor... not a doctor... "
Outside a crew is shooting the Degroots leading a group of Dharma-leers in jumping jacks. Pan over to Roger Linus and one of his coworkers. "Who are those two?" Roger asks, motioning to the 'DeGroots'. To which his coworker replies "Right, like I'm gonna ask. Have YOU ever gotten a question answered around here with anything other than a blank stare?"
Just a guess...

He reminds me of Gman in Half-life series. I wish i hadn't read this would have been a great surprise to see him oh well

Doc, so you think they would be shooting scenes with actors on the island? That just doesn't work itself out in my mind. What's the angle? That the island is some sort of studio a la "Truman?" Since he's on the island I believe we may be getting closer to finding out that the others are either DHARMA or pretending to be them...
Posted By cap10tripps | April 25, 2007 12:05 PM
Well Three clues so far. One is a person, Kelvin Inman. Ex-cia wetworks guy. Not exactly the type of guy you would expect to be part of the Dharma Initiative AS we know it. Next, US Army knife found in season two. Next Candle's many names. My Conclusion? Dharma as we saw it represented in the films is Bogus. Dharma IS the bad guy.

an interview with marvin candle. That is brilliant!
you've got your work cut out to beat that for your next interview doc
Posted By shaun | April 25, 2007 12:29 PM
You're telling me! Unfortunately Matthew Fox, Terry O'Quinn, Naveen Andrews, et al, don't do micro media. So I'm quickly running out of subjects. :D
Posted By docarzt | April 25, 2007 12:37 PM
Who is Roger Linus? Have I unwittingly spoiled something for myself? Well, besides the Dr. Candle physically being on the island. Sigh. I can't say I wasn't warned of potential spoilage though so I ain't mad atcha!

Yeah, Doc..I think you are soon going to be interviewing Vincent and the baby that played Aarron in season 1..:D

Roger was the name on the body in the hippy van. Not sure where the last name came from though.

Hey Doc, how about interviewing Anthony Cooper, Cindy or Richard Alpert?
Posted By gusteaux | April 25, 2007 2:07 PM
So do you think the others purged DHARMA and used the videos to perpetrate the illusion that they are DHARMA? Or do you think the videos are DHARMA, but the scientific research gig is all a facade (man behind the curtain)???
Posted By cap10tripps | April 25, 2007 2:10 PM
I've said from the beginning, all the guns and the cia connections don't jive with the Utopian idealists we see on the video. Dharma is up to no good. And remember my earlier rumor about Dharma know about the island in advance? I don't have any sort of affirmation of that, but it is looking more and more possible. I mean all their labs are built like hardened bunkers... they were designed for war. They knew what they were getting themselves into. Once we find out what that is, I think we'll start to see the end game coming into focus.
Posted By docarzt | April 25, 2007 2:26 PM
By the way, my vote for next interview is Sonya Walger. The Pen and Des story is coming around in a big way. Plus you could ask her if she wanted to come over sometime to play video games or somethin, whatever, I don't even care... ;)
Posted By cap10tripps | April 25, 2007 2:28 PM
Lol. Well I have my webs spun all over the place, hard telling what poor soul from the LOST-verse will be captured next.
Posted By docarzt | April 25, 2007 2:42 PM
So DHARMA's hell bent on world domination (or something to that effect). Doc Jensen has an interesting theory on DHARMA trying to rid the world of god for the overall goal of peace (see John Lennon's "Imagine"). What if it were a bit more sinister? What if DHARMA wants to be god???
Posted By cap10tripps | April 25, 2007 2:53 PM
So why isn't he credited for "The Man Behind the Curtain"? He has been credited in the other episodes....
Posted By Muscle_Bob_Buff_Pants | April 25, 2007 3:40 PM
Awesome truly awesome. i love the interviews with these guys that make LOST, LOST! I mean Marvin Candle, Dr. Artz, all these guys are iconic. The psychic might be cool or the pilot. lol Just amazing docartz! Keep it up!

WTF? Are you talking about?
Posted By T | April 26, 2007 8:07 AM
T - Captain asked me if I thought Candle was Jacob, and I replied that I figured him for an actor and then described a little hypothetical scene. Face it, Dharma is a sham.
Posted By docarzt | April 26, 2007 10:55 AM
i figured it out!!!! rosseaus "Monton" IS dr. marvin candle!!!!!!
Posted By john | April 26, 2007 1:52 PM
If that's true John (and it is highly plausible), Danielle is most likely a remnant of DHARMA...
Posted By cap10tripps | April 26, 2007 2:24 PM
That would make sense in a, "If you give us your baby, we'll let you live," sort of way...
Posted By cap10tripps | April 26, 2007 2:26 PM
I still say Rousseau was not french but Russian, spying on Dharma for the KGB... this was during the cold war after all.
Posted By docarzt | April 26, 2007 4:21 PM
yeah i agree an interview with marvin candle, great
it will be interesting to see if the film about the dharma initiative was real, or if it was just a film and he is not really a doc, ie made for the losties, or if it was just an act back in the day to fool the real people who were working for the dharma initiative!

WWII in the Pacific islands...Rifles, old subs, old army knife, bunkers, CIA Operatives, Russian Armed Forces(Mikhail), Deception, Secrecy... Is this some weird freaky spy game????

VERY interesting! Thanks Doc Arzt!
We started browsing through Alias screencaps and found an almost-match from the Swan Orientation to the Alias office:

I doubt Candle/Wickmund is Montand because Rouseau and her team landed there after DHARMA was purged by Ben and crew. There was another video released at the Comic-Con where he used a different name. The video portrayed him annoyed at the crew as if he was forced into doing the video suggesting they may not take his credentials seriously. he was holding a bunny with the number "15" painted on it when some malfunction occurs and a clone appears in the background. i don't understand the video either if you're scratching your heads lol. i'm still not sure if that is considered cannon or not as it was never shown in any episode.

Montand = Candle/Wickmund/Haliwax(Halifax, per script notes)
Pre-speech P.S. (what's up w/ the CANADA thing? Bonnie & Greta, Ethan Rom's origin, etc... Halifax, etc... keeps coming back to us?)
Danielle Rousseau = Dani = Annie, Ben's childhood girlfriend.
She's got a touch (to downplay it) of "cabin fever," thinking (or Room-23'd?) that she's been shipwrecked on an island for 16 years. Wrong!
She was a DHARMA kid. She was released @ The Purge by Ben out of decency. However, prior to being let go, she was washed in Room 23 so she wouldn't know anything about his wrongdoings or bad deeds; also, she would forget** about the Others' purposes, Island's secrets, DHARMA's technology, anything (if at all) about Jacob, and would have to re-learn EVERYTHING about the island.
She was re-programmed about "Montand."
In actuality, "the incident," per my own theory is something that, perhaps even what took place at the time of the shooting of the Orchid Station 6 video/film, a crossing of time/dimensions, where the same being inhabited the same space (reference the movie Timecop), caused MarvinWickmund (you can get Montand out of that) to lose his arm.
Same matter can't occupy the same space, all that. Very unscientific, I know, but that's the buzz on it. Per the Casimir effect, a time funnel is created, a vacuum of sorts, (ref: Flashes Before Your Eyes, Wikipedia [definition]), two #15 rabbits were in the same room. If they both touched Candle/Wickmund/Halifax's arm, that would've caused it to perhaps disintegrate!(?)
Voila, Annie, Dani (Dannielle/Rousseau), Alex's origin, and the time/space continuum all wrapped up neatly w/ a bow.
:-D
...but I'm sure someone else has thought of this.
