Episode Director: Greg Yaitanes
Episode Writers:  David Fury
Episode Centric Character: Michael and Walt

Synopsis:

Michael is in the JUNGLE looking for Walt, and runs into Charlie, who is looking for Clarie’s luggage.  Charlie leaves as Jack approaches carrying wood, and Hurley arrives to let them know about a new golf tournament for the rest of the deodorant.  Michael continues looking for Walt.

Flashback

Michael and Susan are shopping for a crib for their baby.  Michael brings up naming the baby Walt, after his father, while talking about giving up art for a while to take care of the baby while Susan finishes law school.

In the jungle, Locke, Boone, and Vincent watch as Walt learns to throw a knife.  Locke talks about using your "mind’s eye" to visualize what you’re doing before you do it.  Walt hits one perfectly, and senses something that helped him succeed as Michael arrives.  Michael and Locke argue about Walt, then Boone jumps Michael, and Locke separates them.  Locke tells Michael that Walt is "different," and needs to "realize his potential."

Flashback

Michael is on the floor playing with baby Walt as him and Susan argue about them moving to Amsterdam.  Michael realizes that Susan already took the job and is taking Walt away.

It’s night on the Island, and Sun sits with Michael.  Michael opens up about his shortcomings as a father and vows that Walt "can’t grow up in this place."

Sayid, Shannon and Jack sit around Rousseau’s maps and discuss her notations.  The maps come together around a mysterious triangle.  Michael joins them and talks about proactively getting off the island for the first time via a raft.  After skepticism from the group, Michael informs them that he’s building the raft regardless so that him and Walt can get off the island.

Walt is reading a comic with Vincent, and a page appears with a polar bear.  Walt sounds out the words in Spanish.  Michael comes over and says he needs Walt’s help.  Walt doesn’t want to go since he’s reading the comic.  Michael tries to talk to him about art after Walt talks about liking the pictures, but Walt ignores him, so Michael grabs the comic and Walt follows.

Flashback

Michael is at a pay phone calling Susan and begging to talk to Walt.  Susan tried to get off the phone, but Michael hears a male voice on the other end.  Susan admits that she’s been seeing someone, Brian Porter, the man who hired her.  Michael is annoyed and angrily slams the phone down after telling Susan he’s coming to Amsterdam to get Walt back.  Michael walks into the street without paying attention and gets hit by a car.

On the beach, Charlie finds Claire’s things, but can’t locate her diary.  Michael and Walt are rummaging through the debris from the crash as Michael explains what materials would be good and bad for the raft to Walt.

Kate and Charlie approach Sawyer about Claire’s diary.  Sawyer has it, and begins "reading" passages from inside.  Charlie punches Sawyer, grabs the book, and Sawyer hits back before Kate can break it up.

As Michael rummages through the debris, Walt sits on the side.  Boone and Locke walk by without Michael seeing, and Walt follows them by excusing himself for water.  Shannon argues with Boone about not coming back with any food, and tells him about Michael’s plans to build a raft.  She says she’s going to help, and Boone should also, but he declines.

Locke is sitting near Jack and Boone when Walt approaches.  Before Walt can speak, Locke explains that Michael doesn’t want Walt around him anymore, and that Walt should respect Michael.  As this is happening, Michael comes running in, and mistakenly goes after Locke.  Locke makes a peace offering and leaves.  Walt and Michael get into an argument which ends with Walt saying, "You’re not my father."  Michael takes the comic and throws it in a nearby fire, with the polar bear page on top.

Flashback

Michael is in the hospital after his crash drawing a picture of him in bed, all messed up from the accident.  Speaking with a nurse, he says its for his son who will be two next week.  After the nurse leaves, Susan appears in the doorway.  She’s heard about his accident after not hearing from Michael for months.  She came to see Michael and tell him that she’s covering his medical costs and that her and Brian are getting married.  She says Brian wants to adopt Walt, and attempts to convince Michael that he should give up his hope of raising Walt.

On the Island, Hurley comes up to Michael and tells him that Walt has run off with Vincent.  Michael goes to find Walt with Locke and Boone, but he’s not there and they go to find Walt together.

Charlie and Kate sit in the caves and talk about Claire.  Charlie thinks about how he’s only known Claire for a short time, and after Kate leaves he goes back and forth with himself about reading the diary.

Walt and Vincent are walking in the jungle when Vincent starts barking at something that Walt can’t see.  Vincent runs away and Walt chases after him.

Flashback

Walt and Vincent, about the same age as in real time, listening to Susan and Brian talk while supposedly doing homework about Australian birds.  Susan doesn’t feel well, and as Brian helps her to the couch, Walt gets annoyed that they’re "not looking."  Suddenly a  bird crashes into their window and dies.  Walt seems ambivalent and goes back to his work.

Walt, still looking for Vincent, hears rustling in the trees and bushes and his eyes open wide with apparent fear.

Flashback

Michael answers the door and Brian is standing there.  Susan has died.  Brian says that before she died, Susan told Brian that she wanted Michael to have custody of Walt.  Brian explains that adopting Walt was all Susan’s idea, and how he never wanted to be a father.  Michael gets angry and realizes that its Brian’s idea, not Susan’s wish, for him to have Walt.  Brian then talks about "things happening" when Walt is around.

Michael and Locke find Vincent’s leash on the ground in the jungle.  They hear Walt screaming for help in the distance and run after the sound.

Flashback

In Australia, Walt’s nanny collects some of Susan’s effects for Michael and hands him a box that she thinks Walt should have.  As Walt arrives home from school, the Nanny says that there’s someone here to see him.

Walt is still screaming for help in the jungle.  As he comes into view, Walt is stuck in a tree with a polar bear attacking.  Michael is stunned, but Locke snaps him out of it.

Flashback

Walt and Vincent are playing with a ball as Michael approaches slowly.  Michael explains that he’s Walt’s father and Walt is shocked.  He then asks about Brian, and Michael lies to Walt about being his legal guardian to take Brian off the hook.  Michael also says that though Vincent is Brian’s dog, he wanted Walt to have him.

The bear is getting closer to Walt.  Locke and Michael are walking across a high branch to reach Walt from the other side.  Locke throws the knife to Michael who throws it Walt and tells him to use it if the bear comes closer.  Walt stabs the bear as Michael gets down into the tree.  He gets some vine around Walt and Locke pulls Walt up.  The bear, temporarily stunned, is back, but Michael takes another swipe at the bear and it leaves.

Later that night, Michael and Walt are sitting by a fire.  Michael says that he has a gift for Walt and hands him the box from the nanny that contains every letter and card Michael sent to Walt over nine years.  Walt had no idea.  They look at some of the pictures and Michael points out the card he drew in the hospital.

In the caves, Charlie is reading Claire’s diary.  It’s visible that Claire likes Charlie.  After reading something, Charlie runs to Jack and Sayid and describes a dream of Claire’s where she sees a Black Rock.  Charlie connects the Black Rock to Sayid’s story of the french woman and the mysterious triangle on the map.

Locke and Boone are in the jungle looking for Vincent.  They hear a noise in the bushes, and Claire appears.

Season 1 Episode 02
Title: Pilot, Part 2

FlashBack: Crash

Some adjust by letting others do the worrying for them. We enter where Shannon has found her belongings and is enjoying the tropical sun in her bikini. Boone insists on her helping to which she expresses that they are surely going to be rescued soon.

We see the estrangement of Jin and Sun as he yaps at her for not having her sweater buttoned to the top when Michael comes looking for Walt.

Michael finds Walt a little ways into the jungle, where Walt picks up a pair of handcuffs.

Back to Jack, Kate and Charlie. Kate wonders why Charlie was in the bathroom while they were in the cockpit. He says he was throwing up.

FlashBack:
Charlie is agitated on the plane. Cindy asks if there is anything she can get him, but he needs something she doesn’t have. He finally gives in the to cravings and runs past Jack heading for the bathroom with Cindy and another attendant in hot pursuit. Charlie hides in the bathroom and gets his fix, then tries to get rid of the heroin down the bathroom toilet. But then, turbulence. ..

On Island
Back on the Beach, Sawyer and Sayid mix it up in a hillbilly mambo displaying the way too easy stereotype of a southern guy thinking anyone with brown skin and a beard is a terrorist. All stops with a powerfully vocalized command from Kate. We find out that Sayid, a communications officer can help fix the transceiver.

Jack tends to shrapnel guy, later known to be the marshal.

A "signal party" forms with many going for their own selfish needs. Shannon goes because Boone accuses her of selfishness. Boone goes because he can’t leave her side and Charlie joins because of Shannon. Sawyer joins at the last minute.

We are then introduced to the basic conflict of the show. Presented by Locke to Walt in the form of backgammon. Two sides in an ancient game, one dark, one light. And the scene end with Locke asking Walt, "Do you want to know a secret?"

Jin making nice with others, takes his sushi to others. Hurley laughed and rejected the raw urchins, Claire tried one. THen she put Jin in an uncomfortable position by forcing him to feel the baby kick. She now thinks of the baby as a he.

Making it through a part of the jungle, the Signal Party hears a sound, not like the "something" that got the pilot. Previously, Sayid and Sawyer had continued their shouting match, but adversity often brings people together. Everyone else bolts, while Sawyer stands his ground, pulls out his gun (hey he’s left handed) and squeezes off enough rounds to bring the aggressive polar bear that was charging them.

On the beach, Jack begins working on the marshal, when Hurley faints because of the blood.

Kate gets the gun, pretends not to know how to use it, and divides it among the other in the party.

FlashBack
We see the crash from Kate’s point of view where she is a prisoner in handcuffs. She appears to be the only one awake to see the plane break apart.

On the beach

The marshal regains consciousness, and asks, "where is she?"

On the mountain, the party begins to hear a transmission. A French transmission that is repeated over and over. Sayid calculated it to have been repeating for 16 years. We learn that at least one other group of survivors landed on the island over 16 years before, but all except one were killed.

Charlie asks the most significant question, "Where are we?"

Season 1 Episode 03
Title: Tabula Rasa
Director: Jack Bender
Writer: Damon Lindelof
FlashBack: Kate

Synopsis

In the infirmary, the marshal mutters something to Jack. He instructs Jack to look in his coat pocket. Jack pulls out a mug shot of Kate.

We also realize that we are only intersecting with the lives of these people at certain points. We know this because there are parts of the conversation that we have missed. Sayid was given pretty good detail about what the pilot said by Kate. The signal party agrees that they will not mention the content of the signal.

Hurley runs across the mugshot and asks of Jack, "What do you think she did?"

FlashBack

Kate was running in Australia and was discovered sleeping on hay in a barn near Melbourne. With a shotgun pointed her, she was coerced by a one armed farmer named Ray Mullen to have breakfast. She agreed to work on the farm. She goes by "Annie."

Jungle
At the signal party camp site. Boone lifts the gun and the clip that were taken from Sawyer earlier. They wake and somehow figure that Kat is trustworthy enough to carry the gun.

The Signal Party arrives where we find out that Kate can’t keep secrets. She runs to Jack telling him everything about the transmission. Kate is very curiuos if the Marshal said anything during the surgery to which Jack said, "no."

Hurley looks for stronger antibiotics, but cannot find any. Jack checks in the fuselage amongst the dead bodies. He finds Sawyer scavenging the personal articles of the dead. Sawyer criticized Jack for not seeing the big picture, that he needed to end the life of the Marshall rather than waste meds and resources on a dying man. The exchange ended with Sawyer telling Jack, "Me? I’m in the Wild."

Claire and Charlie interact while loading luggage onto a wheelchair. Jin and Sun interact showing how far they are from one another.

Hurley tries to play it cool with Kate, but can’t now that he knows she was the fugitive.

FlashBack

Kate decides it is time to move on. Ray reasons with her ans she agrees to allow him to take her to the station. Later, we find out that Ray turned her in and he was giving her a ride to the authorities under the guise of taking her to the train station. Curiously, Ray was driving on the wrong side of the road when the Marshall pulled beside Ray’s truck. A wreck occurred thanks to Kate causing the truck to flip. Ray was knocked unconscious, and Kate pulled him to safety. Her act of kindness led to her capture.

On the Island

The Marshal wakes up seeing Kate over him, he grabs her by the throat. Jack intervenes before it is too late.

Michael has difficulty making a connection with Walt. When he realizes that Walt and Locke have become friends, Michael tells his son to stay from Locke. Michael made a promise that when the rain stops, he would continue to look for Vincent. Which is also about the time the rain stops. On his search he hears a sound and runs away from it running into a topless Sun.

The rest of the beach hears the pain of the dying Marshal. His obsession with bringing Kate back goes well beyond the job. Even to the point that he wanted Kate to end his suffering. Sawyer obliged by shooting him in the chest, missing his heart, and collapsing a lung. Sawyer was obviously sick with himself for his ineptitude. Jack, as far as we know, finished the job.

Lost Episode Guide: 1.04 - “Walkabout”

Lost At Comic-Con!, Lost Episodes, Lostpendium, Season 1 — at 12:00 am by Tapdawg

Season 1 Episode 04
Title: Walkabout
Director: Jack Bender
Writer: David Fury
FlashBack: Locke

FlashBack:
Locke’s eye opens and he sits up on the beach. The end of the episode shows a broader version of the same sequence.

Beach at night: Vincent is barking, something is rummaging through the fuselage. Jacks shines a light into the plane to see two glowing eyes looking back. Eveyone is frightened, and Locke is smiling as if he knows something that no one else knows.

The secondary story in this episode is the burning of the fuselage. It is an effort that is started by Jack with strong objections from Sayid. Since the bodies will attract scavengers and there is no way to dig a grave deep enough for 20 or so bodies, making the fuselage into a furnace is the best way to deal with the dead. There was tension between Jack and Sayid in these early episode. One resonating argument that Jack offered was, "Any bodies we bury will not stay buried for long." For one day, their task is to gather enough wood to make the fuselage into a funeral pyre.

Unfortunately, they are out of food, but no matter. Locke has a plan. He breaks out his knives, and we are overwhelmed with the question, "Who is this guy?" It is time to go hunting.

FlashBack

Locke is working in his cubicle when someone calls calling him colonel. The time is set for the rendevous. His boss Randy gives him a hard time about his TPS Reports.

At the rendezvous, he is playing command and conquer to the chastizement of his boss. Randy looked through his things and found out that he was going on a walkabout. He tells Randy that a "Walkabout is a spiritual journey… one draws strength from the earth… becomes inseparable from it."

On the Island

Michales wants to go with the hunting party to get to know his sons new friend. He hand gestures to son to see if she will watch Walt. Sayid begins his plan to triangulate the signal. Kate uses the boar hunt as an excuse to help Sayid.

Claire collects personal effects of the dead to use in a eulogy. She asks Jack to give, but he refuses.

Locke picks up the boars trail. They fan out to surround it when it charges. Locke pushes Kate out of the way, but it goars Michael. Everyone is on their back.

FlashBack

Locke is in bed and on the phone with Helen. He tells her how great it was to tell off his boss Randy. How it was freeing. We get the standard that’s great from the other end. He then tells her that he has purchased two tickets for a walkabout. He wants her to go with him. She stammers and tells him it is inappropiate. If he continues on the phone he will have to pay another $89.95.

On the Island

Kate needs help with Michael, but Locke is unresponsive. He is on back almost waiting for something. He looks at is feet, wiggle them and then gets up. Kate tells him that he can’t go after the boar, to which he responds to her the same way he responded to Randy earlier, "don’t tell me what I can’t do."

Jack speaks to Rose. She tells him that her husband is still alive. She has faith. While speaking to her, he sees someone in the distance that looks familiar.

While going through personal affects, Claire runs across an envelope with Sayids’ name on it. It has pictures inside of someone he cares for.

On the way back, Kate and Michael stop. Kate climbs a tree to put up the antenna for Sayid. While she is up there, the monster reappears in the distance headed for Locke. She drops the antenna breaking it.

The Monster moves in to Locke who is standing there staring into it.

Kate and Michael return with news that Locke may not have made it. As they are debriefing, Jack sees the person again, this time he goes after him as he makes his way into the jungle. Following he and Kate hear a sound. It is Locke draggin a boar behind him.

At night, the service begins. The fuselage is lit as Claire reads off the names. Jack is not at the funeral.

FlashBack

As the camera focuses on Lock, we see him at a tour guide in Australia. They refuse to let him go on the walkabout. They say that he did not disclose his condition and they will fly him back to Sydney. He just can’t do it. As the guide walks out, Locke rolls his wheelchair back saying this is "my destiny, don’t tell me what I can’t do!"

FlashBack to Crash
Locke looks down, wiggles his toes which is an incredible moment for him. He puts on his shoes and we are put back into the opening moments of the pilot.
