‘Lost’ Episode 5.3 “Jughead” Review
In lieau of another hint for the season 5 premiere today, how about we switch things up? Because ABC has made the third episode of this season available to critics, and it’s even better than the first two.
Well, maybe not better, but for all you Lost fans obsessed with finding out what’s happening, it will shed some major, major light on a ton of questions you’ve had. The sad thing about Lost is that no review can adequately explain why an episode is great because I want to avoid spoiling the major surprises.
What can I say about episode 3, “Jughead”? Well, you will learn more about one specific character than you ever thought you would. There’s a revelation I never saw coming mostly because I didn’t think the writers would actually do it this soon.
Also, the name “Jacob” is mentioned. In many ways, this episode is the yin to the yang of “Cabin Fever.”
The third episode of season 5 is also strange for another reason. Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley and Sayid do not appear in the episode at all. But there is someone by the name of Charlie.

“In lieau of another hint for the season 5 premier today” ? Hold on… what? Season 5 premier today?

Sweet! Hmm, who could it be? I’ll guess Jack Sheppard.
Love the site, keep up the great work.

Dale and paul,
please try and keep up, he means todays hint to the seasom 5 premier, not that season 5 premiers today. come on now, dont be stupid.
Marc,
i dont even know what to say to you. i’m not even sure what you’re guessing jack for. its says pretty clearly that 5 of the oceanic 6 dont appear in the episode at all, including Jack. So read the whole thing before you post

i literally SCREAMED when i read “yin to the yang of ‘Cabin Fever’” and “but there is someone by the name of Charlie”
I CANT WAIT!

To Cody:
Before you belittle people, perhaps you should take your own advice and actually read the entire post. It says pretty clearly that we’re going to learn more about one specific character than we thought we would. And so that’s what Marc is guessing at. He’s guessing at which character we’re going to be learning more about. Just because some one doesn’t appear in an episode doesn’t mean we can’t learn something significant about them.
Comment by Steve — January 19, 2009 @ 1:45 pm
Come on Steve,
You think Jack, arguably the face of the show, is someone we can actually learn more about than we ever thought we would. and i’ll agree that the person doesn’t have to be in the episode for us to learn something about them but you really think if there was some big reveal about jack that we would never see him. is it going to be locke and richard alpert sitting around discussing sexuallity.
Comment by Cody — January 19, 2009 @ 2:56 pm
Charlie could be the name of Desmond and Penny’s kid, named after the heroic Charlie Pace who saved Desmond in the Looking Glass, or named after Penny’s father Charles Widmore. The show always tries to trick us, so maybe it will turn out that Charles Widmore isn’t as bad as we thought before. I think the person we learn about will be Richard, Jacob, or Marvin Candle.

Charles Whidmore

After re-watching season 4 like 10 million times….. I think that Jack’s Mom looks ALOT like an older Kate. Everytime they show a shot of Jack’s mom, she just has this odd look on her face, like she knows something.

Cody: Despite why you are choosing to act the way you are, you are going about it in a snide way. Try it in a civil way or stop trying.
Charles’ coma pal? Is it Jack’s dad? Or is it Jacob, and is he being kept in a coma by Charles, as opposed to being financially assisted by Charles because he is in a coma?

John K. throw us a bone!
Is it Widmore?
Or how about this - is the Black Rock in the episode?
Comment by LostInTranslation — January 20, 2009 @ 12:02 am
I think Charles Widmore too. He obviously is or was involved with the island in some way, I think we’re going to get some major revelations from his past. Part of me still thinks he was on the Black Rock!
Whoever it is the first 3 episodes sound fantastic.
Comment by Lostie123 — January 20, 2009 @ 3:31 am
I think we will learn more about the man who’s identity ben stole. Henry Gale. Charlie could be a young Widmore on the island prior to the D.I. maybe a cabin boy on the black rock???
I would hate to die of a heart attack today and miss this season. muhahhaha
Comment by Andy — January 20, 2009 @ 6:33 am
There is no Black Rock in this episode.
However, here’s an interesting fact: some of the paintings on the walls of Charles Widmore’s home and office appear to be those of Claire’s boyfriend and Aaron’s biological father.
Here’s another interesting fact: up until now, the only series regulars Charles Widmore has shared a scene with are Ben, Desmond and Sun.
And a third fact: Charles Widmore and Charlie Pace share, at the very least, a first name.
Whether or not one or more of those facts are relevant to this episode is up to you to think about.

What about Charlotte? The S4 finale hinted that there are some very interesting aspects to her story that we haven’t learned about yet.
“There’s a revelation I never saw coming mostly because I didn’t think the writers would actually do it this soon.”
Maybe episode 3 has some major reveal about her, which, if true, would certainly have me thinking that it came along much sooner than expected.
Maybe “Charlie” is a nickname for “Charlotte”? Ok, perhaps it’s a stretch, but I’m trying to be creative.

Wow, with John K’s recent posting, makes me wonder if Claire’s boyfriend (Aaron’s father) is actually Ben’s son (they look alike, he is also the gay son in Wedding Crashers). As for what else Charles and Charlie share, did they live in the same area? Maybe Charlie is Charles’ biological son and it is odd that Claire would fall for both Ben’s and Charles’ sons.

thats a very interesting point you raise there Aeryckw…a lot to think about there
