‘Lost’ Season 5 Hint #5
Remember the test Richard Alpert gave a young John Locke in “Cabin Fever”? Of course you do. Well, that scene plays a role in the season 5 premiere.
As a reminder, Richard Alpert presented a young Locke with several objects and asked him to choose the one that belonged to him. Locke chose the knife, which was incorrect.
Fans were left wondering what the correct item was. In the season 5 premiere, that question is possibly answered.
The other items were: a baseball glove, a Book of Laws, a vial of sand, a compass and a comic book. One of those items will make a return appearance.

I thought he picked the vial of sand, the compass, AND the knife. And only the knife was incorrect…

I didn’t think he picked the sand or compass, just looked at them.

I think it’s going to be the compass.

i wathced season four over the last few days to remind myself before the season five premiere.
one thing that i picked up which i thought was very interesting, and had forgotten about was in season 4 eposode 5 or 6.. (am not sure)… the show was based around Desmond trying to find his constant (penny), as he got cought in 2004 and 1996 due to travelling from the island to the boat.
at the end of this episode, is showed Farday reading through his diary, and found a note he wrote saying ’should anything ever happen to me, Desmond is my constant’…
i wonder then if Desmond returns back to the island becuase of circumstances referring to Faraday???
your thoughts

Ben, i agree totally. i did the same thing: remember way back at the early promos that were released for season 5 showed juliet finding the swan hatch and someone coming out of what looked like the back door of the swan pointing a rifle at Dan?
two options here, i think:
1) the island went back in time to Radzinsky’s time and that will explain that one,
2) the island went back 2/3 years to Desmond’s time.
if its 2, then Dan has his constant. there was another promo showing charlotte’s nose bleeding - her constant could be her family/birthplace. presumably, the likes of Sawyer and juliet etc have other survivors/others they can use…thoughts?

I think it’s got be the compass. We see in the promo videos Locke on the floor opening his hand and looking at it.
What I really want to know is how does Richard do it? I’m sure he doesn’t just stand in one spot and time travels. And how ever he does how does he know what time era he’s going to end up in?
Also staying with Richard. When he tells a young Ben that he can join them, Richard looks younger then he does in 1957. So how and why did he go back and ask a 7 year old Locke what belonged to him?
And as I said above, Richard looked younger when Ben was a kid than he did in 1957. So that to me says that Richard does age but slowly, and also tells us that he went back to when Locke was born and when Locke was 7 years old in the last ten years or so.

I had heard a theory about the Richard going back in time to see Locke when he was a boy scenario. If you look at Richard in 1957, he looks almost identical as to when he does in what we could call present Lost time. The theory is that Richard went back in time to find out something.. that John Locke was in fact the true ‘chosen one’. If you think about it, both Ben and Locke’s mothers are called Emily. Could it be possible that Richard mistook Ben for the chosen one because of him seeing his dead mother in the jungle as a child? Obviously Richard found out more about this and learned of Ben’s mother’s name being Emily. There’s a sense that there is a some sort of pre-ordained nature to the mythos of the island. Like prophecy, i.e. Locke was ’supposed’ to be the chosen one. Back to the Richard going back in time to see Locke as a young boy; I think that Richard seemed dismayed with Locke’s choice of items because he actually chose the right ones and this proved that Richard had been wasting his time with Ben all those years. In the episode where Locke has to kill his father, Richard gives Locke the file on Sawyer, and he says to Locke that they had been growing more disillusioned with Ben and they wanted to take care of more important things than fertility on the island. If Richard was actually trying to recruit Locke as a boy, the whole course of time would have been changed and I don’t think he would want this to happen.

14 days left… omg I’m an insane fanatic… I hope I don’t die before the series ends. If I’m on my death bed, I’ll demand to know how it all ends LMAO

Book of Laws is what he should have picked. How else will he know what the “Rules” are. All of the other choices would have been great for any ordinary boy, but to pick a cerebral item over recreational items would have noteworthy.
As for when the Island went, I bet they went back to the original Dharma initiative or to Dharma 2.0 in the future. Since the Island keeps on changing hands of who controls it every 16 years. Two reason I say this: In a podcast by the producers, they mentioned there will be more of Rousseau and her story and why has ABC.COM produced a new DHARMA logo for an updated Dharma?
So, is it past or future?

You said it, Dale!…you took the words right out of my mouth!

I really think that the guy in HAZMAT is actually Desmond, sometime between 2001 and 2004, b/c Dan is looking for his constant, and he somehow knows that Des is in that specific Station….
Dunno…maybe just bullst.

No, no, I’m pretty sure Locke also picked the compass and the vial of sand.
Locke finding the compass on the Island is confirmation. It already belongs to him.
Watch that scene again. Richard doesn’t say “Which of these things BELONGS to you?” (singular)
He says, twice, “Which of these things BELONG to you?”
And John picks the vial of sand first (The Island belongs to him), the compass (direction/destiny belongs to him), and the knife, which was incorrect, appraently.

i think the compass is the compass from the video game you know. I mean he either finds the compass then goes to find the elizabeth desmonds boat. And he probably knows that the compass is the way like via domus so idk. Also i think the compass might say via domus which means the way home.

didnt the comic book say something like “find out about the secret mysterious island” on the cover? I read that somewhere.. anyways, its probably that

i like the theory Dongworth came up with…. it does make sense and I had started thinking along the same line wrt Richard no being ageless but aging slowly and actually seeming more ageless bcoz he cud travel thru time. I think his purpose in the island is like the advisor to the Prime Minister or President of a country, and he is also responsible for finding the appropriate leader of the Others, but luckily for him he is given clues as to who the leader is, hence the reason for giving young John Locke the test!
