‘Lost’ Season 5 Hint #4
After last season, there was a lot of debate about how Lost would use flashbacks and flash forwards now that the Oceanic 6 are off the Island. Will there be flashbacks and flash forwards in season 5?
Based on the first two answers, the short answer is no, but the long answer is yes.
Roughly half the action of these first two hours takes place with the Oceanic 6 in what you might call the future, and the rest takes place three years earlier on the Island, in what we might call the present. Within each of those stories, there are additional flashbacks and/or flash forwards in relation to those two times.
So in a way, there are flashbacks and/or flash forwards in every episode. It all depends on how you look at Lost. What is the future? What is the past? What is the present? If you think you can answer those questions now, you’re probably wrong.

It all depends on what you want to classify as the past, present or future. When exactly the upcoming events involving the O6 are meant to be happening hasn’t really been made clear. Kate eluded in her talk with Jack at the airport that it was 3 years after they left the island, meaning that it would be sometime around the end of 2007 or early 2008 that this took place, which I guess within the LOST world would classify as the future, even though to us viewers it’s now the past. Then again, if it’s the majority of fans who believe the island ‘moved’ back in time to the days of the DHARMA Iniative who are correct, then the events we should see involving the people left on the island during Season 5 won’t be in the present, they would be in the past, the distant past for that matter.
I think the word flash has become redundant because the events we’ll see during Season 5 are going to involve different people at different points in time rather than concentrating on one specific character. Basically there will be few less, if any, character-centric episodes.
Before, it was Jack wakes after being in a plane crash, he helps people out, gets stitched up by Kate, and along with eveyone else he hears a loud, ominous and foreboding sound and gets scared. Then we cut back to roughly 8 hours earlier when he was on the plane being given free booze by a stewardess and comforting Rose about the turbulence just before the plane crashes.
Later, it was Jack is hatching a plan to elude the others and get everybody off the island. Then we jump forward to a point in time when Jack has turned into a raging alcoholic (good work Cindy) and he’s screaming at Kate that they need to go back to the island.
Now, in Season 5, it’s the O6 scrambling to come back together and heed Jack’s request at Point A, while the remaining LOSTIES are hanging out with Richard Alpert and crew back on the island at Point B. Even during Season 4 the flash-forwards were non-specific to a certain character as they involved multiple island inhabitants rather than people from those specific characters pasts. It was really like the O6 shared their centric episodes:
The Beginning of the End: Hurley w/ Jack
The Economist: Sayid w/ Ben
Eggtown: Kate w/ Jack & Aaron
Ji Yeon: Sun w/ Hurley
The Shape of Things to Come: Ben w/ Sayid
Something Nice Back Home: Jack w/ Kate, Aaron & Hurley
Whatever happens, I just want Mr. Eko to return. C’mon Adewale, don’t deny us. You can’t hate Hawaii that much.

In the season four finale There’s No Place Like Home the time duration was mentioned as being three years, IIRC. As JD notes, that would place “the future” in your description in 2008 (conveniently in sync with the real age of Walt). I’d be inclined to think of the O6 events as “the present” since I think the point of the time lapse was to make the events of the show catch up to real time for the viewer (and, again, Walt). I think where the island is chronologically is up in the air … though admittedly I haven’t seen Because you Left or The Lie.
