New Tailsection Forum layout for a new season!
With the new season of Lost approaching, I have been working to put the final touches on The Tailsection Forum! Some changes you will see will be pretty subtle–less clutter from long-dead threads, for example. Others are more obvious and are designed to make the forum easy to navigate and fun to visit.
Some changes you will see:
- There will no longer be two separate menus to click through to get to The Tailsection. The new layout has one main menu and it retains the title of "The Tailsection" since I know that a lot of people want to hold on to that Tailsection identity.
- In the previous layout there was a lot of confusion about where to post what. For example, there was one sub-forum titled Lost Theories and a separate sub-forum called Lost Speculation. Those two threads are now one: Lost Theories and Speculation. At one point there was also two different sub-forums that were used to deal with problems on the board: One was a forum for people to make comments to or ask questions of the Moderators regarding the board. This was not a thread that only Moderators could read or post in–it was open to everyone. There was also a separate sub-forum for questions and comments. Those two threads are now one–the Lost Comment Box where posters can make comments, suggestions or ask questions about the board.
- There are also some new sub-forums. One is called The Hatch, and it essentially an "everything else" forum. In the old layout, there were quite a few sub-forums that were dedicated to off topic types of discussion. There was a poll sub-forum, an introduction sub-forum, a fan fiction sub-forum and a general off topic sub-forum. All of those things still exist, but rather than junking up the main menu they are all found in the Hatch. The new layout also contains an entire sub-forum for screen captures and a place where people can discuss any Lost-related article or blog without crowing up the other categories.
- Some of the sub-forums in the previous layouts were jumbled and posters had no idea where they should be posting. One example is the Character/Actor forum. It would be impossible to explain how messed up that section of the site is! The new layout has a Character/Actor forum on the main menu and then each of the major characters have their own sub-forum. There is also an Everyone Else sub-forum for discussion about characters that don’t warrant their own sub-forum. The Episodes forum has also been reorganized.
- Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Tailsection now has someone running it that will listen and respond to your suggestions and who will maintain good order on the forum. I know that for a while the forum was so confusing that everyone was posting everything in General Discussion. Hopefully the new layout will make it easier to know where you should be posting. There may be some tweaking that will need to be done at first, but if you simply let me know what you think and how the forum is working for you then I know that this will work.
So please, if you have any questions at all, feel free to PM me or e-mail me at lost_grrl@comcast.net
See you in the forum!

Good to know, thanks for the update! Question, though: The real appeal of TheTailSection has historically been the news page, not the forum. As others have frequently pointed out, and which I won’t go on about here since it’s been done to death, it’s the news section that needs the most work, both in terms of design and content. Will this page be redesigned as well? To be honest, the small green wording is ugly and non-intuitive, and the layout leaves a lot to be desired from an aesthetic standpoint (plus, it’s slow to load). Will there be any effort to make the news page — the most important, and most visible, aspect of TheTailSection — more attractive? (I mean no disrespect to anyone in saying any of that, by the way.)

Freddie: I don’t know the answer to your question. I actually was always more a part of the forum because I liked the sense of community that existed there in the early days. Once it became part of Buddy a lot of people left and it began to feel impersonal but there were still a lot of good people on the forum and I really felt that it was my Lost home. Frankly, I didn’t even know until a few months ago that this part of The Tailsection still existed. I knew that Doc had his own site and I figured that Buddy wanted to simply concentrate on the forums and would use their own T.V. show pages to give info on the show. So for those reasons, my focus was the forum and I volunteered for Lost Admin of the forum to try to improve the site.
But I do understand what you are saying about the appearance of this page. In fact, I suggested a couple of months back that the look of this site and the forum be updated and done so in a way that makes their styles a bit more consistent. I was told it was a good idea and would be looked in to, but have heard nothing since. I, unfortunately, do not have the authority or the programming knowledge to make those sorts of changes. But you can try suggesting it Kim or some other member of the real Buddy Administration.
In the meantime, there is a sub forum that is going to be dedicated to articles and news. Right now it is just an empty forum because I am trying to get the structural things hammered out. So you are more than welcome to check that out (or any part of the forum, of course) or even post articles or news there yourself!
