Your Voice: Life and Death on the Island
Submitted by Jeremy
On the 41st day after the 815ers crashed on the island, Boone dies and Aaron is born. I don’t know if it was the same hour, but I think that the island wanted Aaron, and for Aaron to be born there had to be a sacrifice. Well, we all know that Boone was the sacrifice, but what if Boone is part of Aaron or "surrounding Aaron," so to speak.
Babies or children are thought of as new life or a new beginning. Every time a baby is mentioned, we have to think about a death on the island or wonder if a death is about to happen.
1) Aaron is born but Boone dies.
2) Ana-Lucia mentions that she was pregnant and kills the man that killed her baby.
3) Ben is born, but his mom Emily dies.
4) Because of pregnant Claire, Ethan dies and Charlie is hanged and nearly dies.
5) Michael wants Walt back, kills Ana-Lucia and Libby.
6) Danielle and Karl are killed for Alex to be a hostage.
So on and so forth. In my eyes, for a child to be introduced and/or become mentioned in the show there must be a sacrifice.
Is this merely a theme the show explores time and again, or does the island require a sacrifice for each of its children?

I think your theory could work for Ben and his mother, and Boone and Aaron, but I think it’s stretching it a bit for some of the others, like Danielle and Alex. I do like your idea that maybe Boone and Aaron could retain some kind of connection, I’d like to see something like that as I think the Boone character still has something left to give the show. I’m sure there’s a way to tie Sun’s daughter, Ji-Yeon into this theory somehow but I haven’t worked that out yet!
Oh and one more thing.. FIRST!

i also think your theory is point on with the Boone/Aaron situation.
I was so mad when Boone and Eko died… seriously.
I know Eko had issues with everything on the show, contracts and stuff, but when he and John were working together to figure out the island’s secrets, it was badass. Same with Boone and John.
I agree though that you’re stretching a bit with the other connections. The Ji-Yeon connection probably isn’t too relevant because she was born off of the island. Unless the “sacrifice” was in fact Jin.
add yet another twist to the mysteries of LOST.

i love the theory!!…maybe Jin had to die for Ji-Yeon to be born?

Interesting. I think you have #1 and #3 right. Boone died for Aaron. Emily died for Ben (which must mean Emily had some relation to the island! She does appear on the island to Ben and to my knowledge only people who have been on the island appear as apparitions on the island). How about adding Alex and Rousseau? Rousseau’s crew died so Alex could be born would fit as well. This also would explain why women die during childbirth, they die as a sacrifice to the island in exchange for the babies.
Also what was up with the Kate being pregnant story line this season? Seemed pretty lame that it was just dismissed as “I’m not pregnant” after being built up over other episodes. Wonder if they were going in one direction and got cold feet so they pulled the plot?

I personally think it’s a theme, and a good one. There are definitely parallels between Ben and Aaron. I think these parallels and the theme as a whole are not meant to be really part of the mythology. I think it’s just a writing tool, contrasting birth and death in the same episode.
As for Kate being pregnant, I think that was just a set up for her getting Aaron. By making her think that she was going to have a kid it made us and her think of her as a mother, so that when she starts raising Aaron it’s not so strange. Also there was some serious irony in the same episode where we find out she says she wasn’t pregnant. Claire tries to get her to hold the baby and Kate says no and looks really awkward.
