Your Voice: The Brisco County Jr. Connection
Submitted by Darth Holden
In the wake of the season finale I found myself wondering, "What can I watch that is as entertaining and smart as Lost?" I looked at my DVDs and I saw The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
I remembered that Carlton Cuse was half of the creative force for this short-lived (and too brief) series, with Jeffrey Boam being the other half. In watching, I discovered many similarities to Lost in the storytelling and the mythology of the show. The orb, good vs. evil, and the father issues, just to name a few. It’s almost as if Brisco was a template for Lost. Example:
The orb = The island. Both have mystical powers making "miracles" happen.
Brisco = Jack. Classic hero.
Ghosts = Well, ghosts. Jack’s dad, Brisco’s dad, etc.
There was even one episode featuring actor Francois Chau. That’s right kiddies, Marvin Candle/Mark Wickmund/Edgar Halliwax himself. Don’t think THAT didn’t freak me out! The writing is great, the stories are eerily similar in nature, and if nothing else the show was just cool!
Watch for yourself and make your own Brisco County Jr. connection. These are just my impressions of the two shows. One which I grew up with and loved, and one I am currently growing up with and loving.
What are you watching to pass the time during the long hiatus?

Have your theories posted on The Tail Section!
"Your Voice" is a new TTS series in which Tail Section fans submit their articles, theories or reviews to be published on The Tail Section for all their fellow fans to read. Have you spent far too much time pondering the origins of the DHARMA Initiative? Have you alienated your co-workers by rambling about Daniel Faraday’s wacky time anomaly experiment? If so, we want to hear from you. Send your own Lost theories, reviews, or general thoughts to Editor(at)TheTailSection.com. Please keep all submissions between 300 and 1,000 words. We will read through all submissions and contact you if we publish your entry. You will also receive byline credit on our site.

Don, how does this qualify as a “Your Voice” feature? It’s just a suggestion that people watch Brisco County on DVD. Read the blurb at the end of the article inviting people to “have [their] theories posted.” This post in no way fits the criteria listed there, as it’s neither a theory, article nor review of Lost.

You may be right, Tombo, but it’s still his voice on something regarding Lost. It may not be a theory, but it is a topic other Lost fans may find interesting. I know I was a bit too young to get into Brisco when it was on and after reading this (and realizing Bruce “This is my Boomstic” Campbell was the star), I’m definitely going to check it out. I don’t think everything posted here should be a groundbreaking theory. Sometimes even the biggest fans ned a break from those.

What the heck is this? This exact same thing was posted on this same website not a year ago by Dr. Atrz. Why don’t you try coming up with something a little more original.

Coming from someone who can’t come up with groundbreaking theories, I have no problem with this “Your Voice.” And actually, Tombo, you’re wrong. It is a theory. Our friend here is theorizing that there may be a connection between the elements of Brisco County, Jr. and Lost. Both shows connected by Cuse. And I think it’s awesome that Marvin Candle was in that show! I had no idea. I used to watch a few episodes here and there when it was airing, but I don’t remember it too well.
Anyway, You have done well, Darth Holden.

Mike, I’m not saying this sort of thing shouldn’t be posted (though, according to TWR, it was already posted a year ago, oddly enough). It should–it’s interesting and fans might want to read it. But it dilutes the “Your Voice” concept since it’s just a viewing suggestion. Just my opinion–you’re free to disagree, of course.

What’s most important here is that no one comment on the substance of the theory itself. Instead, we should keep having a meta-discussion about whether the theory should even be here. We could even have a meta-meta-discussion about our posts. For example: Should I even have written this paragraph?

Ed wins!

I understand what you’re saying, Tombo. Maybe it should be in a different category than the “Your Voice” section. I personally didn’t know what the rules and regulations were as far as submissions for this. But I agree that it should still be posted somewhere.
Now. I haven’t seen much of the show, Ed, so I can’t comment too much on the substance of the theory. All I can say is that it’s intriguing and now i’m going to try and rent the episodes and kill some time with that. I’m also a huge fan of Bruce Campbell, so that shouldn’t be too hard.
I’m going to be bold and say that what we need is a meta-meta-meta discussion about whether this site should even be here.

Yes, perhaps the section should be re-named Tombo’s voice since that seems to be the only one that matters. How sorry I am Tombo for having an opinion and wanting it to be heard. You sir, are a knob. Thanks to the rest of you however that read this and had their interest peaked by it.
Cheers.

man who cares how the post was labeled all of your comments complaining about it are 10 times more useless than what was said in the post.
That being said I also grew up watching Brisco and when I made the connection I went back and watched some episodes again. Carlton Cuse is actually in the first episode playing a painter, pretty funny he acts very femininely.
I agree that there is something to be said about similarity between Brisco and his dad as well as Jack And his dad. Both fathers were huge influences on their sons following in dad’s footsteps. Jack as a doc and Brisco as a lawman/bounty hunter. They also both were known dead in the beginning but continued to be big parts of the show even in death. I believe R. Lee Emery played Brisco Sr. but I am too lazy to look it up. I don’t think there are any keys to unlocking the secrets of island in Brisco but there are similar themes in both that might help us understand some of our characters a little better. Or maybe just Carlton’s daddy issues.
Also there is def a Lord Boller, Saywer similarity in the wisecracking “frenemy” department
i would like to maybe generate a discussion about brisco here that doesn’t involve the semantics of labeling this a theory, thought, discussion, or whatever the hell you wanna call it.
