‘Lost’ Season 3 Soundtrack Coming Soon
If there’s one thing I hope we can all agree on, it’s that Michael Giacchino is amazing. Not only is his score for Lost consistently mind blowing, but I also love him for the energy he brought to Alias, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. The man should have Oscars and Emmys and Grammys piled up in his basement by now.
Fans have been wondering if Giacchino’s score for season 3 of Lost would be released anytime soon, and we now know the answer is yes. According to the folks at DarkUFO, a new 2-disc Lost soundtrack will be in stores on April 29. The first disc will contain the best music from season 3 up to the finale, and the second disc will contain the entire score from "Through the Looking Glass."
My favorite parts of the Lost soundtracks are the wacky names that Giacchino gives his compositions. They have titles like "I Crashed Your Plane, Brotha," "McGale’s Navy," and "Thinking Clairely." However, nothing will ever top "Shannonigans," which is a word so great that it’s been adopted into my regular lexicon.

I don’t own any of these soundtracks but I’ve been paying more attention to the music since I started visiting http://lostmusictracks.blogspot.com/, which posts samples of music from each episode. I recommend the site - it’s made me want to buy all three of these albums.
I hadn’t consciously realized it until wading through the above site but, much like with some feature films, different characters, locations and situations in Lost have recurring themes. For example, the island has an “exploration theme” that was introduced in season one and is often played using parts of the plane’s fuselage as percussion instruments. Ben had a very brooding theme introduced in season three. In Ben’s flashback, when he first arrives on the island as a boy the Ben theme and the island exploration theme are intermingled to great effect.
It’s all worth checking out. Some of the original season one beach music is absolutely classic.

As a film composer myself, I totally agree. Great scoring. I particularly liked how, in last night’s episode (”Ji Yeon”), that he chose (I believe for the first time), to end the final scene with music rather than the harsh sound effect. This could have just been direction from the director/producers, but it was an interesting change and worked well to support the Jin/Sun story. These guys are always mixing it up!

Maybe the drop in viewers is due to the fact that ABC now posts full episodes of Lost on their website to watch/other websites post the full episodes also. I admit it, sometimes I just don’t have time to watch every Thursdays, but it’s my all-time favorite show so I catch up by watching the episodes online.
