Easter Eggs for Episode 4.5 “The Constant”
Last night’s episode of Lost is still making my brain hurt, but that’s exactly why I’m addicted to this show. The Easter Eggs that popped up in "The Constant" were fairly easy to spot, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dig into them and analyze exactly what they mean. This week we talk about the Black Rock journal, appearances of the numbers, what Daniel Faraday’s journal message could mean, the Slaughterhouse Five connections, and other assorted time travel craziness.

This is my easter egg:
Is it a wedding ring the ring that Penny wears on her right hand at the end of the episode?

brain hurting as well. didn’t desmond see penny *after* the scene last night where he said he wouldn’t call her for 8 years? and didn’t he also see her dad who attemped to pay desmond not to see penny again? this was *after* desmond was in military jail…
which would imply that after that night, and desmond’s time in the service they were still in touch.
obviously, i nor any really knows about time travel and how it works, so maybe that is fine
just seemed in the story last night it was implied that in the time between desmond getting penny’s number and dec 24, 2004, they never spoke.

Isn’t the number that Desmond told Faraday to set his machine at the same as the lot number for the auction of the Black Rock log?
Comment by Cindee — February 29, 2008 @ 11:36 am
did anyone notice that the laptops in the auction room (1996) looked new?
Comment by Aaron negus — February 29, 2008 @ 12:30 pm
they had laptops in 1996? must have been heavy as hell to carry…haha.
Comment by Charlie's Ghost — February 29, 2008 @ 1:10 pm
Absolutely trivial comment in a sea oh physics theory and discussion:
The fact that it wasn’t actually Queen’s College Oxford was made more blindingly obvious by the fact that it was clearly the church that Charlie visited in his first flashback.
But that’s just nitpicking. Best episode EVER.

Penny’s father is the first mate in the Ledger.Hes been time traveling ,making millions.Ben also has multiples of himself, traveling back and forth, revealing everything that has happened.

Redd I really like your theory. this sight should have a ratings option for each post — so folks could earn reputations with certain privileges reserved for the more liked/respected posters…just a thought.

someone can check the directions told to michael in the end of season 2, are the same cordenates they have now in the helicopter?
and also the guy on the bed, who seems to have the same as desmond, do we see him before???
Comment by fotoloco — March 1, 2008 @ 2:06 am
I’m pretty sure that the coordinates that micheal had was 3.25 or 325 but the numbers were 325 no matter what and last night on the paper that danny faraday gave the pilot dude was 305

I think a nice little hint at what’s to come here came from some dialogue between daniel and desmond in daniel’s lab. Daniel’s memory problem seems to be tied to his exposure to radiation. Daniel says he is exposed to the radiation a hundred times a day, and needs the vest to protect him, and desmond asks why his head isn’t protected. I believe there lies the answer for his seemingly forgetful and possibly more quirky nature on the island as opposed to his more scholarly self seen in 1996….
just a thought…
Comment by Frank — March 1, 2008 @ 10:19 pm
Yes, I also had the same thoughts about Daniel’s memory problems when I saw that scene. I think it’s pretty clear that the radiation is the cause. My only question is, why didn’t Daniel have problems jumping in time when he came to the island? Didn’t he ask if Desmond had been exposed to high amounts of radiation recently..so I was thinking that people exposed to radiation going to or from the island would experience the time travel. But Daniel didn’t, although he is afraid he might, Desmond being his constant.
Comment by Veronica — March 2, 2008 @ 3:26 pm
Daniel didn’t experience the same thing as Desmond because when Daniel came to the island they supposedly followed the exact bearings that they had to…when Frank, Desmond and Sayid were on the way to the boat the storm forced them off that route, casuing Desmond’s time travel.

The freighter that is first introduced in this episode is actually seen before in Season 2 (I think). It’s in the very background of the shot where they’re walking on a pier somewhere in australia. Someone that has the DVD’s might want to check this but it’s from one of the flashbacks.
Comment by Kenny — March 3, 2008 @ 12:19 pm
On the ‘big reveal’ at the end that desmond is faraday’s constant does not necessarily mean that daniel will experience ‘the sickness’ travelling to and from the island. I think it was meant to be proof that Desmond did in fact travel back in time not just in his concousiousness but also in form. The reason Faraday cannot remember is because of the repeated radiation exposure without protection-as desomnd pointed out-has effected his memory (also demonstrated by his lack of determining the three cards on the beach).

Any one notice the color of the radiation Faraday’s radiation gadget puts out when he sends the rat to the future. PURPLE!!!!! Looked oddly familiar to the color that the sky turned to on the island turned when they didn’t press the numbers into the computer.

I think the boat (and Island) are still in 2004 while Penny is in 2007. When Des fails to call in 2004, Penny spends 3 years trying to find him. Now he calls her and it is 2007 (of course he thinks it’s 2004). Just a thought…
