Lost and Heroes Shut out at the Creative Arts Emmy
Well, we all promised ourselves we wouldn’t get upset about the Emmys, so sticking to my guns: Lost did not win the Emmy for Single Camera editing or Sound Editing. Those were the only two nominations for Lost in Creative Arts, an area Lost won three awards in back in season one.
Heroes, surprisingly, also failed to win any of the five categories it was nominated in. Now, I like Heroes, but I was a little annoyed by the Lost Vs. Heroes crowd that touted Heroes hefty bag of nominations. Not only does the across the board loss mean Heroes has no chance of matching season one of Lost in Emmy glory, it also could indicate that Heroes will get shut out on the prime time side of the awards as well. Time will tell.

Just because the general public doesn’t see what a creative masterpiece LOST is, it doesn’t mean it isn’t.

I’ve debated Lost vs Heroes in the past, but one of my friends sort of cleared things up the other day. I am an avid reader of novels. My friend is an avid reader of comic books. My friend liked Heroes a lot, but has just never felt any desire to watch Lost. I have watched both, and I personally find Lost to be the deeper and more involving of the two. The point is that comparing Heroes and Lost is like comparing a really good novel to a good comic book. You can do it, but when it comes right down to it, they’re two entirely different things.
Even Lindeloff and Cuse have said that they see Lost as a novel on TV. They spend more time developing the characters and the story. The whole thing is relatively seamless, with "chapter-style" cliff-hangers. Heroes is like a comic series on TV. Every episode is like an issue, and there are always cliff-hangers to get you to come back for the next episode. So Lost, being the novel, has a more substantive feel, with characters that you really get to know and care about. Heroes, being the comic book, is more about the ride and is less concerned with the inner workings of the characters’ minds and with cohesiveness (one of the problems with Heroes is that they seemed to care more about getting from point A to point B in the plot than with making the story cohesive).
I would venture to guess that all the people who are frustrated with Lost’s slow pace aren’t big readers. Heroes is a little easier to get into because you know that every question is going to be answered relatively quickly. Heroes is meant to be watched and then sort of stored away like a comic book. Lost is meant to be examined and "re-read," like a novel.
I know this had nothing to do with the Emmy’s but since Lost vs Heroes was opened up again, I couldn’t resist.
I’ve said several times on here that the Emmy’s are clearly biased against science fiction (Hello….where’s Battlestar Galactica?), and let’s face it, Lost is now a science fiction show. Awards shows are wastes of time meant only to get a bunch of celebrities in one room so they can sell expensive ad time. Art is not competition.

Heh, Jared, I like that analogy. I watch (and enjoy) both Lost and Heroes, but they do have different feels to them.
Doc Arzt,
it also could indicate that heroes will get shut out on the prime time side of the awards as well.
Wouldn’t surprise me. I could see Heroes taking directing for "Genesis", but it’s hardly a lock or even a front runner. Masi Oka has some serious competition in the supporting category, and Heroes didn’t submit the episodes it needed to submit to have a chance to take series.

I totally agree Jared. I remember last season watching heroes was fun and once it was over I wouldn’t have to stress about what I’d just seen because it is all pretty straight forward and there isn’t a lot to miss. Its enjoyable, but simpler than Lost. Lost is like work. Great works of literature can be read over and over with a new meaning each time. Lost is very much like that. You can look at it from so many different angles. Heroes isn’t that multidimensional because it is meant to be entertaining. Its very entertaining (sometimes moreso than Lost), but it doesn’t go much further beyond what you are seeing in terms of interpretation. Lost can be interpreted in so many different ways, just check out the Theories pages on Lostpedia.

you know what’s really sad? Dick in a Box got a creative arts emmy. for what? I have no idea.

Thats ok, most works of Genius are never credited until years later! Just look at Plato, Shakespeare, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver (not the president, the guy who invented peanutbutter), Sam Adams, Jules Verne, Albert Einstein, Orson Welles, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Al Bundy!
Ok, well I guess that last one happened pretty much right away, but those others took some time!
Lost will have its day!

James, I am of the opinion that Dick in a Box getting a creative Emmy was the Best Thing Ever. Think about it: now people everywhere can utter the words "Emmy award-winning song Dick in a Box". :^P
Comment by S. A. Bonasi — September 11, 2007 @ 7:09 am
I couldnt agree more Bonasi. Thats why we should start petitioning for more "Dick in" action this year on lost. Can you smell Emmy glory? I can, and it smells like Dick! Yay!
Also: Heroes is terrible. I gave it a shot. watched the whole first season. Fans who say it gets less cheesy are delusional, people who think it’s original have never opened a decent book*, and Everybody** invloved should feel deeply ashamed for adding in any small way to the shows success. Especialy the viewers at home, because as they say in crappy acceptance speeches "you make it all possibl watching" Sorry, rant over… I love lost.
*Notice that i didnt say comic book. because frankly the shows writers cant handle even the most simple of dramatic literary themes. Makes me thankfull to have a show like lost, one that actaully understands the concept of allusion/homage instead of just cutting and pasting "ideas"
**with the exception of Tim Sale, I still love you timmy. Jeph Loeb… not so much.

I think that it’s quite shocking that none of the BSG actors were nominated for an award. I really hope BSG wins the award for best writing. I mean, writing that makes you sympathetic and root for suicide bombers surely deserves an award.

This is why networks will continue to make crappy generic courtroom, detective, hospital dramas because award shows get scared when a show is too different. Lost doesn’t pussy out and goes into sci-fi stuff and science experiments and suddenly all those old men in expensive suits are afraid to give it any nominations because it’s too "out there" for them, they don’t want to lose their credibility by awarding it for being creative!! They just have to play it safe and give the nominations to a show with police, lawyers or doctors, then no one will ask questions..
