Lost Emmy Prospects Looking Bleak
First of all, for those of you who don’t know… I also contribute to the Seattle PI as one of three featured bloggers from BuddyTV. If you’re guessing that the title has something to do with the beautiful and mega talented Elizabeth Mitchell being passed over for a supporting actress nomination, you’re so right it’s frightening. Now, back to Seattle PI… I hate to say I told you so, but as much as I would love for Lost to get some revenge for last years snub, I called this. Why "Lost" Won’t Find its Emmy Mojo. Read it and weep. I may be way off on the reasoning, and Thursday morning I may be giving you entirely better news, but the fact is if you are not a fan, a small selection of episodes from the third season are going to be too confusing for you to judge the series, particularly the performances.
Much of the excitement we fans get from the performances is grounded in the connections between the event and how it relates to past episodes. Watching these characters without knowing their history would be just, meh. The Elizabeth Mitchell’s performance was great because of where her character went as a whole. Unless you know the nuance, you won’t understand just how great a single episode’s performance is.
Back to Elizabeth Mitchell. So here is the shortlist, posted by Robert in the comments a few days back.
Lorraine Bracco, "The Sopranos"
S. Epatha Merkerson, "Law & Order"
Rachel Griffiths, "Brothers & Sisters"
Katherine Heigl, "Grey’s Anatomy"
Sandra Oh, "Grey’s Anatomy"
CCH Pounder, "The Shield"
Aida Turturro, "The Sopranos"
Kate Walsh, "Grey’s Anatomy"
Patricia Wettig, "Brothers & Sisters"
Chandra Wilson, "Grey’s Anatomy"
Yes, four gals from Grey’s Anatomy. I won’t pick on any one particular actress here, but as someone who watches the show and recaps it during the on season I can say that in terms of "range" this group pretty much lives in the moment. But there is the problem.
In a contest ruled by an episodic mindset, shows that take their time to build a great story with complex characters simply cannot survive. If this proves anything, it proves that the voters are going for talent that has its "shtick" down. Should we be surprised? Seriously? I mean 24 is practically universally thought to have hit its repetitive, cliched worst this season but it is still expected to nail an Outstanding Drama Series nomination. The fact that it was on the short list is unnerving enough.

Doc, how dare you to call Jack Bauer out like that. He deserves a lifetime achievement award, he’s earned it.
Seriously I’m with you in this one, the academy would have to watch the entire season and somewhat have a little of insight about the show plot to really appreciate de acting. I feel this is not the case. Habing 4 women of Greys Anatomy and not EM is a travesty. I really think the only ones with a chance to be nominated are O’Quinn and Emerson. As much as I love Lost, if Fox is nominated it isn’t going to be fair.

judging by how often your predictions are just completely wrong, I’m not worried about Lost, I think it will get the respect it deserves this year.

Who cares? The Emmy’s and the Oscars are just a bunch of over-hyped political bullcrap anyway. Art is subjective, and giving awards for art is ridiculous. People have different tastes. Some people think Lost is brilliant. Others think it’s terrible (granted most who think it’s terrible either haven’t actually seen the show or are people with short attention spans who would rather watch schlock like “Deal or No Deal.”). The fact that Lost basically made television history by convincing a network to allow it to end naturally is enough of a victory. It’s like how Star Wars has barely been recognized by the Academy, but it’s created such a massive fan base and changed American pop culture so much that who cares about awards really? It’s just a stupid little gold statue. The impact upon TV history is much more prestigious.

People who give out awards are severely biased against science fiction. Why do you think Battlestar has never been nominated for anything? It’s the second best show on TV, and nothing. Lost has stepped one foot over the science fiction line and therefore is dead to the awards community. Don’t expect Lost to win any more awards. Just be content with the fact that it didn’t get cancelled.

It has to do with the fact that LOST must be watched from episode 1.
The Sopranos nominations are kind of crazy if you ask me. I LOVED the final season, but it was ALL about Tony. The other actors had their chance in earlier seasons.

I read the Lost Mojo article in Buddy TV and the comments that follow. The article was excellent, I highly recommend it and I wanted to share my comments with the folks here. Also, I have to ask Doc - If you wrote the article in Buddy TV, why do you change your name? Just curious! Anyway, this is what I wrote - “I couldn’t agree with you more if I had written the article. Right down to the part where you say you would be concerned if Lost won too many Emmys. I feel badly for Lindelof and Cuse. Their brilliant minds deserve an Emmy but this is not the type of show that gets Emmys even though it’s the one that most merits it. I feel sorry for the actors, especially Juliette, Kate, Locke, Jack, Sawyer and Charlie. They all deserve nominations AND awards. They should be acknowledged for the great performances they gave. The fact that Katharine Heigle was nominated this year is a joke. She was a whiny pain in the ass this year and I say that from knowledge as I watch the show, like the show (though not as much this year) and she used to be my favorite. Now she’s become so annoying, I find myself disliking the actress which isn’t fair but I can’t help it. Regardless, I will not ever stop being the Lost fan that I am. The show is brilliant, amazing, intense and fun to watch. An Emmy is not going to change my opinion of it - ever. I just hope the actors and producers don’t change if they don’t win Emmys. Hopefully, the loyal Lost following and the fan base, ME!!! will be enough for them to continue making an excellent show. And by the way, aren’t you DocArzt from the TailSection?”
