Lost Spoilers - Michael Emerson Speaks
Props to Bo for the tip. Michael Emerson appeared on the Comic News Insider podcast and had some very very interesting revelations. Some of it sounds like it might be a little theorizing on Michael’s side, but alot of it sounded like he was quite sure of. Click on through to get the fine points.
- Jacob has been cast, is somebody that has worked on LOST, but we have not heard them speak and we may never see him speak. He could remain in the shadows. (reinforcing my theory that Jacob is Jack Bender.)
- The freighter is not connected to Dharma.
- There is still more to learn about Ben’s background. Man Behind the Curtain was just a sketch.
- The conflict between the hostiles and Dharma will be explored more in season 4.
- Emerson believes the ‘hostiles’ were a separate research group who have assumed the Dharma work.

I think it is speculation. I believe that the freighter is somehow connected to Dharma. That is why Naomi said to Mikhail when she first saw him “I’m not alone.” She didn’t know him, but recognized his Dharma suit.

What if he’s just staying in character and leading us all on???
Comment by rick — June 14, 2007 @ 7:46 pm
who is jack bender?
Comment by D — June 14, 2007 @ 8:32 pm
I hope they answer that question, about the hostiles.
I was hoping they’d say in the finale, who the others are.
We know who they are, but what are they doing?
Comment by Taylor — June 14, 2007 @ 8:42 pm
Or she could have said she wasn’t alone because there was another aboard her helicopter. Either way she’s not telling the whole truth.
Jack Bender is a director and producer on Lost. I just looked at a picture of him, and that’s as good a guess of who Jacob is as any. Wasn’t there a picture of a dog in Jacob’s house? Wasn’t that Benders?

The bad guy is that Thomas something from the lost experience
Comment by Ted — June 14, 2007 @ 10:37 pm
Jack Bender is someone who works on the lost team, and i think it was him (A prop guy?) that was the Jacob in Man Behind The Curtain, when Locke saw a brief glimpse of him, well..WE did anyways, from Locke’s wide eyes soon after that moment when we had a perfect Tivo moment, locke looked like he had seen him..but idk
and ur right it was jack bender cause they said its someone who works on lost in the background…
Comment by Daniel — June 15, 2007 @ 4:19 am
Emerson chose his words so carefully when he said Jacob was someone who’d “worked on” Lost in the past, but was someone whose voice we’ve never heard. You get the sense that means we have seen him, but that is actually illogical. There are two possibilities, Jacob is someone who we have seen as an extra who has never had a speaking part, or Jacob is someone who works behind the scenes (Bender.) But the way he delivered the answer was very purposeful, like he was trying to put it in vague terms.

i left futurama for the island

I love it, he is as much of a Lost geek as the rest of us. Theorizing without any hard facts… maybe its this or that.
Comment by TabulaRasa — June 15, 2007 @ 7:08 am
I got it, Jacob is Vincent. Explains why we have seen him but we will never hear him speak.
That would be absolutely terrible if it were true.
Comment by supa — June 15, 2007 @ 9:09 am
Once again, everyone seems to be focusing on ambiguous Jacob references. What I find mind-blowing is the straight up statement that “the freighter is not CONNECTED to Dharma.” “Not CONNECTED to Dharma” (IMHO)would tend to eliminate Widmore, Piak and Hanso! Who does that leave??? The CIA (Kelvin)???
Comment by gusteaux — June 15, 2007 @ 10:11 am
Can we be sure it is a freighter at all?

Can we be sure it is an island at all?
Comment by gusteaux — June 15, 2007 @ 11:21 am
That, Doc, is a VERY good point. I’d never thought of that.
Apart from anything else, would a freighter be feasible from a production point of view?
Comment by ClovisSangrail — June 15, 2007 @ 11:22 am
Movies have been made in Submarines, so a freighter would be no different. Plus, the quarters on a ship could mimic the claustrophobic nature of the hatches and jails these people have been in.
I disagree that not being connected with DHARMA eliminates Widmore or Paik. First of all, those connections were made available via TLE and we cannot assume that Michael Emerson followed this. Even if he had been told that the freighter belongs to Widmore, or in looser terms Penny’s father (substitute Paik and Sun’s father if you like), he may not have known that there was an established connection (assuming you believe TLE to be cannon). Secondly, we can’t assume he was told who the freighter belongs to. He may have been told “It doesn’t belong to DHARMA”. So let’s not discount the possiblity that it could belong to those two entities. And I certainly won’t discount that it could belong to someone or something we don’t know about.
And since no one acknowledged it, the picture in Jacob’s crib was indeed Ms. Honolulu or Lulu, Jack Bender’s dog.
Comment by Higdon — June 15, 2007 @ 1:21 pm
Higdon:
I agree that without knowledge of TLE Emerson/Ben might not have knowledge of the connection between Dharma and Piak Heavy Equipment, as Piak was most likely involved in the construction of the hatches which occurred prior to Ben’s arrival on the island. But (not meaning to go all HawaiiHeaven on you here), Widmore Industries is clearly printed on the island’s medical supplies, including the pregnancy test kits. And Ben has a little more than a passing interest in on-island pregnancy issues.
Comment by gusteaux — June 15, 2007 @ 2:29 pm
And haven’t Darlton clearly confirmed that TLE IS cannon?
Comment by gusteaux — June 15, 2007 @ 2:30 pm
They said the background information on Dharma/hanso was canon but characters like Rachel and Mittlewerk were not.
Comment by DocArzt — June 15, 2007 @ 5:11 pm
I think whomever is cast as Jacob will just be playing the role of what we SEE. I think that someone else will provide the voice, kind of like how Darth Vader was played, and I think that person will be O’Quinn. I think Locke is Jacob in the future or past, wherever he exsists.
Comment by Tukachen — June 15, 2007 @ 5:49 pm
Gusteaux: When did Ben get pregnant? In all seriousness, I believe those pregnancy tests were from the passengers and not from a stash in the hatch.
Doc: Can you reference the interview or provide a link to that interview where they said that Rachel and Mittelwerk were not canon? Not that I don’t believe you, I just want read what they had to say. Much obliged.
Comment by Higdon — June 15, 2007 @ 6:48 pm
I agree with you Tukachen but correct me if I’m wrong I believe I read somewhere that Carlton voiced Jacob.

Loved the interview. V. Intererting. Michael emerson rocks!
Comment by WILLOW — June 16, 2007 @ 4:38 am
Hummmm…you may be right Higdon…they may have gotten the pregnancy test kit from Sawyer’s stash…so many small details to keep up with…
Comment by gusteaux — June 16, 2007 @ 8:09 am
I agree that Locke is Jacob in the future.
Comment by Tommy B. — June 16, 2007 @ 10:28 am
Jack Bender isn’t a props guy, he’s one of the executive producers and, by an extreme landslide, the most prolific director. I know most of you know that, but for the others who were confused, there it is.
Comment by JamesBadassFord — June 18, 2007 @ 12:56 am
it can’t be jack bender, he has blue (or green) eyes. remember the video with the close on jacob’s eyes, it was dark brown.
Comment by anne — June 19, 2007 @ 5:10 am
Whoah…after googling Bender’s pic, I’m now officially on board with your theory, Dr. Arzt. The nose and stubble seal the deal for me…
