LOST Traffic Plummets in the off season
Seems LOST fans are taking a much deserved break from the web. The media research group Hitwise, a kind of Nielsens for the web, is reporting that LOST dropped from the top five all the way to the bottom of the top ten when it comes to television show browsing. The data comes from a group of ten million households. Of course if these are typical households, they may not hold the ilk of we hardcore geeks, but none the less here is how LOST stacks up against the competition.
10. Lost (1.4%)
9. America’s Got Talent (1.61%)
8. On the Lot (1.66%)
7. Grey’s Anatomy (1.69%)
6. One Tree Hill (1.74%)
5. So You Think You Can Dance (2.21%)
4. Americas Most Wanted (3.01%)
3. Deal or No Deal (9.9%)
2. American Idol (6.09%)
1. National Bingo Night (38.02%)

National Bingo Night Doc? Seriously? What is going on in the universe?

it’s hard to put much stock in this survey when it’s telling me that the majority of Americans are surfing the web for information on that Bingo show… ya know?

Dancing, singing, and putting circles in numbered squares. Now that’s what I call quality entertainment.
To think, it can only get worse for the next six months…

Bingo is a whopping 38.02%? Bogus! Foul!
There are more people still trying to figure the identity of Thomas Veil on the net than surf’n about Bingo. Where is Sopranos on this list?
No way! Not believing this one! Someone just got paid alot of money to inflate a show of Lowest Common Denominators.

I’m not a National Bingo Night supporter, I couldn’t sit through it, personally, but those numbers do make some sense… you can go online and get Bingo cards to play along and win money. So people that don’t normally go online to check out a show probably are in this case.

Yeah, this study is skewed by the fact that shows like National Bingo Night and Deal or No Deal allow viewers to win prizes by doing stuff online. Furthermore, reality shows like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance have online voting, so that bumps up the percentages as well. This isn’t a true study of online research or discussion on a show.
The mere fact that Lost is in the Top 10 is impressive considering it is a drama and doesn’t have a blatant online aspect (such as voting or winning prizes) to it.

Idol doesn’t actually do online voting, yet. And the study was actually conducted after it left the air. But I’m not that surprised by idol. Bingo though… that drives me nits.

This could all change if Evangeline and Elizabeth did a no holds spread for Playboy. That would provide the subtle bump we need to pass national bingo night.

how do you even research this?

James. The data is gathered by a company called Hitwise which has participating households. It’s just like the nielsen ratings, except for the web.
