Scant Season Four Details
Everyone is on break now, getting some much deserved rest, but that doesn’t stop the rumor mill from cranking. Here are some tidbits that came our way over the Memorial Day weekend. Apologies to those of you who kvetched that I wasn’t updating enough.
Also within the next day or so I’ll be rolling out some design changes targeted at making the ads a little less obtrusive, while keeping the advertisers happy.
- Season Four’s flash forward sequences are essentially a season-within-a-season. Don’t freak out, its not another mini-pod thing-a-ma-jig. The particulars have not been planned but apparently they are looking at a mix of flash backs and flash words, with a larger number of flash forwards.
- The flash forwards tell a linear story, but will be presented in non-linear format from the vantage point of different characters. (This kills the ‘only Kate and Jack’ got off the island theory.) The big kicker is the Flash Forwards will be shot, according to the source, in Los Angeles.
- Production will begin in mid-August and complete in March. That means that roughly 11-13 episodes will be completed by the time LOST airs. With spoiler-gate 2007 behind us, what are the odds that LOST will be locking its production down tighter than ever?
- Kristin Veatch reports that Harold Perrineau has been offered his job back as ’series regular.’ Rumors were circulating to this effect MONTHS ago, however. It was also reported at that time that the creators had a plan to deal with Walt’s aging. Hmm… Flash forwards + Plan to deal with Walt’s aging = Perrineau returning as regular in the future portion of next season. I supposed we will also see Walt going all Zen on us, learning to project himself into the past.
Thats actually an extremely interesting idea Doc. What if Walt could project himself to the past? With Des being able to see the future and all that what if his ability to see the future actually stems from Walt? hmmm… only problem being why would Walt have intimate knowledge of Charlie’s deaths. hmmm… still an interesting idea though. Well even if they dont come from Walt, if Walt is helping from the future and Des gets visions of the future its entirely possible that the future as we see it will change.

thanks for the update Doc so lets see if understand correct are you saying the Flash Forwards would focus on jack kate and whoever else got off the island and flashbacks would focus on whoever stayed on the island.

Has anyone here seen the movie Memento? I think it would rock if they played the flash forwards like that. Have island time as we know it going foward, continuing to tell its mysterious story. But at the same time, have the flash-forwards moving backwards from this one we just saw. That would all build up to where they meet in the series finale. Maybe not feasible, but it could be fun to watch that way.

hmmm no, Steve. Let me try that again, the flash forwards will be telling a linear, connected story (apparently) and the flashbacks will probably be as they always are.

Her sister, sadly, probably ended up dying of cancer. We never saw her give birth.

I have a feeling that was the last we’ll be seeing of Malcolm as Walt. I’ll bet he’ll be replaced by a younger actor if Michael and Walt come back. I mean, in his last three appearances, they shot him at all sorts of weird angles to kind of hide the growth, and I’m pretty sure in Three Minutes, the last time he had a lot of dialogue, his voice sounded computer modulated higher. So yeah, I hate to say this but I think MDK is done, unless they do a “flashforward.”

Alright, I had to post again, to comment on the coffin talk, which I neglected to mention the first time around.
It is not Jack’s friend or family, it is not a tall person (If we can bring the casket’s size into play), and its someone that Kate seems to despise. Leaves a lot of candidates, lol.
I say this mostly because there is a long time in between now and that time in the Lost mega-arc, and hundreds of different ways almost anyone could piss her off in that way, and also fall out with Jack to the point of not being considered a friend any longer, if they were actually a friend to begin with.
I think we are supposed to believe that it is Ben, or Sawyer, or Locke, or Juliet…but in reality, it could be literally anyone still alive and kicking at the end of Season 3. Same goes for the ‘he’ that Kate had to get home to. Could be a multitude of people, Christian Shepherd (If he is still alive in the future, which I don’t want to even get into), Sawyer, someone else we haven’t met, even a son (Sawyer’s?).
All I’m saying is that we really can’t judge the context of the flash forward from on-Island terms, because things could be much, much different when we get to the airport than we think it is right now…

Some people are speculating that it was Juliet’s sister and her kid who were in the car accident on the bridge. I think I also heard that maybe the kid was Zack from the tail section. The actors names are suspiciously out of the credits on IMDB and Lostpedia.
I agreed that we prolly wont see what happens after Jack and Kate @ the airport for awhile. But I bet they both end up going back to the island. Some time durring season 6. Be even cooler if Jack goes at the begining of the season then Kate ends up following him later.
The flashFORWARD sceens will likely take place for 815′ers until some sort of rescue. With the flashBACK sceens possibly being dedicated only to the “others” up to that point. Once we see how they get rescued, the flashFORWARD sceens will then pick back up with Jack trying to return to the island.
I’m also betting that Perrineau will return.

If Jack and Kate are successful in going back to the island to change something significant, the scene we saw at the airport will never happen. In fact, nothing we saw in the flashforwards will ever happen if we are to assume that by going back they can create a better post-island outcome. And as far as having the “flashforwards” move backward at the same pace as the on-island occurances are moving forward and having them meet at a mid-point: In order to change things to create a happy ending, wouldn’t they have to go back to BEFORE Jack made the call on Naomi’s phone? (And preferably before Charlie dies.)

JK - Emailed you for follow up on shirt. Could be smokey but remember, one of the things Mrs. Klugh asked Michael was akin to “has he ever projected himself?” Can’t remember the wording off hand, but it was something like “Has he ever appeared somewhere he shouldn’t have?”

I believe you must connect the “story” with real life. As much as we, and the writers, would like the actors to go along with plans for the story, they all don’t and the story suffers. I was bothered that ABC decided to stretch it out for three more seasons because of this one inescapable reason. Some people enjoy living in Hawaii, others hate it and feel confined, especially those who have other things going on and face minimum travel times of five hours one way. I think the story line will move to the mainland with some episodes being shot in Hawaii in one or two filming sessions. This is facilitated by a shorter season. Why did O’Quinn put his house up for sale and say he prefers hotel rooms? Why did Charlie have to die? Look for more clues in the real world and I’ll bet you find them. In my flashes I see disappointment for fans of Lost.

Im just curious how you all would feel if MY scenario was how they moved forward with the show?
I say the season starts next year with them leaving the island in the first few episodes. But in that process, damage is done to the island and to some of our characters. And we know where this path will take them - Jack drunk and on drugs and losing his mind.
We don’t want this path! So…
3 or 4 shows into the season - intro scene - Jack wakes up in the jungle. No white shoe in the tree this time. He runs to the beach. Boone’s back, Shannon’s back, Charlie’s back, etc. Then we essentially rewatch from the beginning, but different things happen. Like a butterfly effect. A basic course of events, but small changes ultimately end up as big changes to the storyline. The characters have no distinct memories of the things that happened the other time through, but some vague familiarities now and then. (Like Kate saying to Charlie, “Do I know you from somewhere?” and Jack’s uncanny memory to remember the numbers and gun vault combo after they are only told to him once.) They have to redo their time on the island until they do what they are “supposed to do.” Fate.
So the pilot episode of Season 1 way back when actually happens AFTER The Looking Glass. They do go back and we’ve already seen it. We just haven’t seen their first time through spent on the island.
Or maybe Jack DOES have that drink in the back of the plane with Ana Lucia?! What storyline would that timeline reveal?

Another thought I had was that whoever controls the island, controls time and space. So the Lostaways are rescued and these people tell them they can choose what point in their life they want to be returned to.
Jack chooses the moment he changes his mind about reporting his father being drunk during surgery. He never tells and Christian keeps his job (maybe gets promoted) and doesn’t go to Australia and die.
Kate chooses the moment before she kills her father. So she never becomes a fugitive.
I think we will learn more about what choices other people made as we see more of the episodes. Maybe Hurley chooses to not win the lottery, maybe Sun chooses to never ask her father for the payoff money, maybe Claire stays in Australia to raise Aaron on her own, the possibilities are endless (and may then explain who ends up in that coffin.) But then because fate deems it, they all end up back on the island. The island needs them to fix the damage they’ve done.
I believe fate is certain events that simply MUST happen. The means to an end do not matter. the minor details of how it happens is not important. Just that certain major events are predestined and will happen one way or another.
Maybe the island has a certain fate aspect to it in that certain things HAVE to happen. It needs this particular set of people to make it happen and it will continue to bring them here until it is done the way it is “supposed to” be done.

Kate and Jack = 2 so they would use the plural of character. But if the rumor is true and Harold is coming back as a regular in S04 then they might have both Michael and Walt and since they left the island we may see them in flash forwards, too. But I won’t be surprised if only Jack and Kate are the main characters that leave and the rest (or most) are red shirts.

Question for you all….
I’m watching season 2 the episode where sawyer and mike are on the raft and the shark is after sawyer. There is a screen shot of the shark in the water and it has a DARM hatch sign on with….but the symbol looks like a shark. Did anyone notice this?? what do you think it means?

7ate9, I really dug your theories. I, too, agree that fate does play a very big part in how the series will unfold. Just the very fact that Locke told Jack in the season 3 finale “You were not supposed to do this” tells me that fate is what the series will ultimately end up being about.
People keep losing site of one thing as it relates to the “game-changer” of season 3 finale fame. This show, despite the contributions of Cuse and Lindelof, is a J. J. Abrams show. What did J. J. do in the 2nd season of Alias? Take the show off the reservation and destroy SD6. He effectively changed the game (for the better, in my opinion. S. 3-5 of Alias were pretty damn good). From now on, I would not be surprised if we did not see the island for too much longer. Just a few more episodes leading up to a rescue, and thereafter, it’s all L.A. all the time. It would suck, surely, as Hawaii is just gorgeous. But, if the writing and story hold up, none of us will even notice the change (plenty of mystery in L.A., last I heard…Lol).
Also, getting back to fate, I think that the smoke monster is actually Jacob in a different form. We saw that he could be invisible to some, inaudible to others, and that the perimeter of his shack is surrounded by some kind of lava-like ash substance. Maybe, once Jacob crosses that barrier, he turns into smoke and just flies around.
That would lead to the question of why he has been systematically picking off certain Losties. If you look at it from the perspective of fate, it makes sense. Ecko would not repent, so he offed him (another chance would not have helped Ecko, he would have done the same thing anyways). He was just curious about Locke, so he tried to drag him down a hole to get a better look. He chased Juliette and Kate into the jungle only to take pictures of them, because they’re both so incredibly hot. Well, maybe not that last one….Lol.
Any way you spin this, I am so stoked about season 4 and beyond. Should be great.

Okay you people have lots of good ideas but just one thing about the smoke monster: have yuo thought thought about who Jacob might be? I worked out a theory that this “smoke monster” is Jacob’s primitive form and if he has to, he takes human’s form (for example: Walt, Boone, Ben’s mom, Jack’s father and so on). Also I discovered something weared from Season 1, Pilot part I. Watch the scene where Locke and somebody else carry some injured guy and then Locke turns around and tells some other guy to get away from the engines and this guy is sucked into the engine. Well, the next scene where the engine explodes is creepy. Watch the explosion carefully and you see that some black thing comes, touches the engine and then fast flies back to air and as soon as it touches the engine it explodes. Could it be true that it was the black smoke a.k.a. Jacob?
