Lost 3.20 - The Man Behind The Curtain - In Pictures
ABCMedianet has released the promo shots for LOST 3.20 - The Man Behind the Curtain. Yes, I realize this is usually more exciting when it happens a week before the episode is released, but trust me, there are some cool shots worth taking a gander at. Pay close attention to the shot of Locke and Ben reflected in the pond. What nice reflections. Indelible I’d say. Practically interchangeable in some regards… wink wink…

What picture of them at the pond? The last one I see is the one with Naomi and Desmond
Comment by Marcus — May 10, 2007 @ 10:49 pm
Yeah, I don’t see them anywhere either.

I don’t get it.. Also that photo isn’t on buddytv. I had to go to abcmedianet to view it and I don’t see anything exciting. Jacob got your brain Doc?

Damn, wiggum, harsh! “Crap-shack of a site”??? Do they serve hard-shell crap here, or just soft-shell?
Comment by Walt_vs._Michael — May 11, 2007 @ 8:31 am
I see you posted the pic now but I don’t get what you’re talking about, unless your talking about the whole walking thing between them
Comment by DarthVibbert — May 11, 2007 @ 8:50 am
Of course, judging by brow level of some of your reactions to a simple mistake, I’m sure there will now be post after vulgar post about how there is nothing special about the picture.
What i’m geting at is that the episode is full of inversions, the portland sign… 32 miles. An inversion of 23, one of the numbers. Reflections. Then the heavier inversions and reflections of the narrative, Ben and Locke both having mothers named Emily that did not raise them. Both having an all consuming desire to be special…. etc…
Comment by DocArzt — May 11, 2007 @ 8:51 am
doc, ignore these lame ass’s. i can see what you mean about the pic and the ep in general, btw, if any of you think this site is lame what are you doing here? dicks.

Does anyone else wish they would have shown the shoulder monkey a little bit more clearly, and AT LEAST given the monkey who played him a proper credit?!?
Don’t worry though… I’m not. The shoulder monkey’s role will come to the forefront in the season finale, when it will materialize, escape the ring of volcanic ash (after a revitalized Locke sweeps it away), lead the Losties to a tunnel into the underground, showing them a long-LOST civilization of underground inhabitants, mirroring those in THE TIME MACHINE, by H.G. Wells… and ALL OF THIS while playing a set of miniature cymbals the ENTIRE TIME!
Talk about a game-changer!!! Talk about houses with more rooms than you’d been led to believe!!! Talk about a shark-jumping moment that actually jumps the monkey!!!
Trust me, all of you speculating about who the man named Jacob was… you’re wasting your time! What you should be speculating about is who that tricksy shoulder monkey is! He is the man/monkey behind the curtain that the title of the episode was referring to, and don’t even get me started on the evolutionary implications that this twist will expose!
How important is the shoulder monkey to the show? Let’s just say that the reason for the mid-season hiatus was due to the lengthy casting sessions needed to find the perfect monkey actor to play the coveted role of the shoulder monkey in The Man Behind The Curtain! They auditioned virtually every North American shoulder monkey (that didn’t have conflicting obligations), did extensive open-call casting sessions in Europe and South America, and even flew some African shoulder monkeys to the States for private meetings with the casting agents.
Trust me, the “snake in the mailbox” is a monkey on a shoulder right now, but when he leaves that shoulder and comes in to his own, the universe of Lost will never be the same!

Wow. Judging by some of the posts here, some of you have apparently discovered other uses for airplane glue, and a few have some anger issues.

I actually think the guy is kinda funny. The episode sucked on a lot of levels and the post show talk of the ’shoulder monkey’ is just icing on the cake.

Awright, maybe I’m crazy but I *am* seeing something in this photo. Something quite profound. Maybe unintended, but still amazing.
Look closely at the reflection in the water. Especially if you turn the image upside-down. The branch behind Locke’s head looks very much like the horizontal beam of a Roman cross, with Locke’s head drooped downward like how you see Christ’s head in so many artistic renderings of the crucifiction.
I posted some more thoughts on this on my blog at http://theknightshift.blogspot.com/2007/05/unintended-christian-imagery-in-this.html in case anyone’s interested in this and other Christian imagery lately relating to Locke.
Like I said, it’s probably unintentional. But still pretty cool
Comment by Chris Knight — May 11, 2007 @ 12:22 pm
If you look at the picture upside down it looks like Locke is firing a gun at Ben….and Locke looks like Jacob
Comment by Just wondering — May 11, 2007 @ 12:27 pm
hmm, DocArzt, do you think the island has some kind of Superman Bizzarro World element to it? Maybe Locke and Ben are eachother’s “bad twin”?
Comment by MikerMan — May 11, 2007 @ 1:31 pm
Shoulder monkey, I believe you may be on to something. Look at the tree brach directly above Locke’s head in the reflection. Zoom in if you have the capability… it’s the SHOULDER MONKEY! Can’t believe all the easter egg hunters out there haven’t noticed yet! Two appearances in a single episode… it’s clear they have a larger purpose looming for this shifty, elusive shoulder monkey.
His doubled presence lends credence to a much larger issue too… the appearance of the shoulder monkey near both Locke AND Jacob could very well indicate that Locke IS Jacob! (As many people have already suspected.)
Add this to the frothy stew to add some flavor: in ancient Aramaic, uLockque (Locke) translates roughly to “bearer of light”, while Jacoubois (Jacob) roughly means “bearer of darkness”. Two sides of the same personality, a duality construct of some nature… there is something more here that the writers aren’t letting on to yet. Whatever it is, the shoulder monkey is smack dab, right in the soggy bowels of it!

What’s more ridiculous and queer, “ShoulderMonkey”-imitator, presenting a valid, though possibly implausible theory, or belittle-ing someone else’s valid theory without having ball-sack enough to use your own name.
That itching between your legs, “ShoulderMonkey”-imitator… that’s called a yeast infection. It’s a vaginal fungal infection, that can easily be treated over-the-counter. Just ask your local pharmacist, she’ll set you up with some Monistat 7… though it comes in a 3-day formula now too! Will wonders ever cease?

IF YOU REFLECT THE PHOTO AND STARE DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN AT 11:00AM IN THE MORNING WHILE STANDING ON ONE FOOT AND HOPPING IN A CIRCLE OF BLACK ASH YOU WILL SEE THE FUTURE OF THE ENTIRE SEASON OF LOST!
Comment by dylan — May 11, 2007 @ 4:12 pm
Interesting, dylan… very interesting. I will try it tomorrow morning. My problem will be that the one-footed hopping is supposed to be done in rhythm with the cymbals of the shoulder monkey. And although I have located him in two different scenes of this episode, I have yet to locate him near my home town. Perhaps one of my neighbors has a shoulder monkey I can borrow, just for the morning, of course. Say 11′ish?
My cat will be jealous though. He has a lot of nice traits similar to that of a shoulder monkey. The two are indelible, I’d say. Practically interchangeable in some regards… wink wink…

I honestly don’t understand the hype behind the “Locke’s reflection looks like it is shooting Ben!” Well, Locke looks like he is shooting his reflection too…big whoop.
Also, that isn’t this index finger doing the pointing, that is his other hand.

Does anyone know what ShoulderMonkey is talking about? What is shoulder monkey, shouldermonkey? I don’t even like typing shouldermoney.
shuddermoney? soddermonkey? kukukaka?
Just trying to have fun with LOST . . . .
Comment by liveforlost — May 12, 2007 @ 2:47 pm
If you look at the reflection…behind Ben…it looks like one or two people are there. You obviously cannot see them in the original scene because the reflection is showing something out of the picture.
Comment by Kimmie — May 12, 2007 @ 7:10 pm
Looking at the first picture of the set in BuddyTV, where exactly do you think the submarine is? It looks like some sort of narrow water passage/bay? From the aerial image in the opening scene of the season (when the plane breaks down over Otherville), we don’t see water anywhere near it. But from the scene of Ben’s arrival, it looks like the sub left them right next to the barracks. Maybe some secret underground water tunnel?
Comment by Rog — May 13, 2007 @ 5:16 am
The shoulder monkey appeared on Jacob’s shoulder in the split second that they showed him. It also appears in the reflection shown above.
The addition of a shoulder monkey to the show is a wild, daring attempt to mix things up… to throw a “monkey” wrench into things… gum up the cogs of the wheels of the machine that is the juggernaut we know today as the show Lost!
It smacks of brilliance!… the decision to introduce a shoulder monkey in to the mix… as the shoulder monkey’s role grows over the course of season 4, Lost’s ratings will correspondingly grow to levels it has never before obtained!

ShoulderMonkey… that revelation just smacked me across the face like I was someone who insulted Kate! You definitely drop knowledge like it’s toxic! Peace on the Lost beach, y’all! Peace on the Lost beach!

I think the point of this photo is that the non reflection view of Locke was used to photoshop the “enhanced” picture of Jacob.
anyone can see they used this picture to fake the Jacob shot. that is all.
The reason for Doc to not clear it up is beyond me.
