Can Speed Racer Save Lost’s Jack?
It’s going to get harder and harder to discuss LOST without bringing in any spoilers as we draw closer to the finale so let me just say this up front: There is news concerning Matthew Fox’s acting gig on ‘Speed Racer’ that may impact earlier rumor/prediction/spoilers.
As far as the non-spoilerish part: Matthew Fox is going to be playing ‘Racer X’ in the film ‘Speed Racer’, which is an adaptation of the cartoon being directed by the Whachowski Brothers ("The Matrix" series.)
‘Racer X’ is, for those who don’t know, is the pseudo villain of Speed Racer. For more info on Racer X that would Speed Racer spoilers, and how some new news may impact LOST, jump on through to the other side.
Racer X in the series is eventually discovered to be Speed’s older brother Rex. A sort of race car ninja with a very ‘Kung Fu’ like back story. Driven away by his fathers lack of confidence, Rex linked up with his mysterious mentor Kabala who taught him how to conquer "tortured roads and broken trails."
I’m telling ya, everybody says a Speed Racer live action flick is career suicide for the Whachowski’s, I think it’s sheer genius! And as a Speed Racer fan I’m psyched as hell to see Matthew Fox playing Racing X. Fox has that dark side he keeps at bay for LOST, can’t wait to see it played out on the big screen.
Now. How this relates to LOST. Entertainment Tonight reported that Matthew Fox would be shooting Speed Racer DURING LOST’S SUMMER HIATUS. Whether that was put out there to throw us off the scent or not, who knows, but it certainly looks like Matthew Fox is expected to return. Which leads me to my next most likely to buy the farm: Kate.

Doc, you throw enough names out there, one of ‘em is bound to stick…That being said, I can’t imagine a bigger rift happening between Jack and Sawyer than Kate being killed or injured by the Others in some conflict.
But killing her would kill the female fan contingency that thrives on the love triangle. That, with the writers maintaining back in season 1 that Kate was a hero of the story, well…..
who knows??

jack’s a dead man.
Comment by KoozyK — April 20, 2007 @ 11:23 am
I believe it’s Kate. Mainly because I don’t see what else they can do with her back story. Okay, she killed her dad. Then what? Other than being the hottest thing on the beach she doesn’t have much else going on.
Comment by thefallguy1 — April 20, 2007 @ 11:26 am
Kate is a good pick for a couple of reasons:
1 - Evie and Dom are engaged and Dom is leaving. that makes their relationship quite hectic.
2 - The triangle will become a self mockery if not resolved in some way that has substantial finality to it. Death is a good way.
3 - The flashback is Jack, so the impact is going to be either something that Jack does or something that Jack is focused on; either one could result in the death of someone close to him. It would help if we knew what his flashback was about. All we know is he looks a lot like GI Joe in one scene and is being roughed up by a couple of big colored dudes.

Jack will not die, despite what the 16-year old skater fanboys/girls would have normal fans believe. One thing I’ve learned from reading user comments is this: if a post is dripping with anti-Jack venom, it’s usually the result of someone from this “skate ’shipper” camp, which is something I would expect to see on novice Lost sites, not this one.
Sorry for the rant, but Jack remains the anchor of the show, as does, to a lesser extent, Locke. They respresent two diverse dichotomies.
But, just my two cents…

Doc, how much do you think we should take into the account the following regarding a perhaps much-ballyhooed death of Kate:
1.) Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monighan’s off-screen relationship, and..
2.) Charlie’s purported death this season…
If Charlie does die as has been speculated for half the season now, is Kate’s death a result of anything that may occur offscreen?
Comment by Todd Anthony — April 20, 2007 @ 11:37 am
Give me a break!!!!!! This is all to throw us off that Sayid is going to get killed-end of story…..

“16-year old skater fanboys/girls would have normal fans believe”
it seems pretty presumptuous of you to assume that based on someone’s opinion, they are an immature kid. do i dislike the character? no. but i do dislike the actor and i feel that they have done all they can with him. i also feel that foxy wants off the show to advance his career.
i’m sorry to post my opinion on this site. i could have sworn i stayed on topic with the article on hand. i just wanted to state the fact, in a simple and to the point manner, that i disagreed with the rumor that was proposed at the end of the piece. heaven forbid i say anything contrary to what docartz says.
oh, and thanks for posting your blog spam. no one cares.

“it seems pretty presumptuous of you to assume that based on someone’s opinion, they are an immature kid.”
So you slam my blog and say that no one cares, yet you accuse me of being presumptious…it sounds pretty hypocritical.
Anyway, it’s just my experience from reading user posts on various sites that there are two large contigencies of Lost fans: pro Jack/anti Sawyer…pro Sawyer/anti Jack. It wasn’t necessarily a hit against you personally. But take it however you want to. God, lighten up.
It seems there is so much speculation as to whether or not Jack is going to die. Why the speculation? Because of his “movie career?” Actors/actresses who appear regularly in TV shows can’t make movies?
Dude, lighten up…thanks for flaming me too, by the way.
Comment by Todd Anthony — April 20, 2007 @ 11:49 am
Well saying that all Non Jack fans are skater kids is pretty stupid and offensive on your part and it would be pretty stupid to assume noone would comment on ur stupid post. But now that the rudeness is over I agree with Lori when she says that Sayid is going to die. He hasn’t been a huge factor in the show for a while now and Jack, Kate and Sawyer are a love triangle that the show wouldn’t want to get rid of. Locke is way to important to the show. So my guess would also be Sayid

What about this thought. Ben gets healed by this mystical monument. The island still wants him gone, because he and his people are killing it (and “he’s cheating”). Ben ventures a little to far, and Smokey (which I believe to be the island incarnate) unleashes his wrath upon the leader of the others. I’d hate to see Ben go, but it would be nice to see Smokey kickin ass and takin names…
Comment by cap10tripps — April 20, 2007 @ 12:31 pm
Thought #2, Juliet’s story has been signifigant enough to consider her a major character. Let’s say she crosses Ben and the others. She would have to go…
Comment by cap10tripps — April 20, 2007 @ 12:33 pm
Personally I don’t see any of the “big four” leaving the show. But it I were to rank them in most likely to least likely:
1. Locke is the most probable because he’s made the most enemies of anyone on the show. He’s done things that have been detrimental to the Others and to the Losties. His story has almost come full circle, meeting his father and discovering his “communion” with the island. Seems like his story is coming to an end.
2. Sawyer, for similar reasons to Locke’s, has a story that has almost come full circle. If he meets the Real Sawyer and kills him what happens then? He’d be kind of a rudderless ship. I’d like to see him stick around but he could go the way of Eko, unapologetic and un-redeemable.
3. Kate. She’s the female lead on the show and at the center of the love quadrangle. Despite what some would call “boring” flashbacks, her story is one of the more easily relatable to the audience in terms of a morality tale. She committed a terrible act on a horrible person to save someone she loved. I don’t buy the whole “Dom’s leaving so she’ll want to leave to,” thing for a minute. Dom’s got hobbit money and Charlie money so I don’t think he’ll have any trouble visiting the islands regularly.
4. Jack is last because… well he’s the face of the show. He’s the leader of the group, rightly or wrongly, and he remains one of the more likeable and sympathetic characters on the show. If the writers plan to take Dr. Jack down a “dark path” in the season finale, then wouldn’t it behoove them to have that arc last more than one episode? Additionally, since the audience was introduced to the show through Jack’s eyes (literally) it would be a logical bookend to have the series close with them as well.
Comment by sandleford — April 20, 2007 @ 12:39 pm
Doc, I see your points but I’ll side with Cap10 on this one by mushing his comments together. I think it will be Juliet, getting whacked by Smokey. Her defiant showdown behind the fence is just begging for a bitch slap!! Holla!!
And for the record: I hate when people mush a couple’s name together. “Skate” “Jate” “TomKat” “Bennifer”…the whole damn thing is ridiculously stupid.
Or as I like to say: Stupidiculous.
Comment by El Prez — April 20, 2007 @ 1:02 pm
Sandleford: good points on each character. I don’t buy the idea that Jack will be the one to die. I really can’t see any of these characters dying to be honest; but a MAJOR character death would shake the foundation of the show for sure.
REmember, this was stated in the buddytv article…could this rumor be enticing or ludicrous?
“The rumors surrounding the episode range from enticing to ludicrous.
* The survivors divide, half believing Locke has betrayed them, half believing Locke is acting for the greater good.
* Kate finds herself divided between Jack and Sawyer.
* Jack’s father will appear on the island.
* A new enemy will emerge to threaten the survivors.
* The ‘Major’ death will be either Jack, Kate, Sawyer, or Locke.”
Comment by Todd Anthony — April 20, 2007 @ 1:07 pm
My prediction is Sun. If we learn that she became pregnent after arriving at the island. This will set up the drama for next season when we discover that Kate too is pregnet (from Sawyer). If Sun does not die this season, then it will be Sawyer in the finale while performing a heroic deed. We will still discover that Kate is pregnet with his child. Sun will die at some time during Season 4 and the “save Kate” drama will still unfold. I posted my predictions for the other four May deaths in another string (Roger Work Man, Gerald DeGroot, Anthony Cooper and Charlie Pace).
Comment by gusteaux — April 20, 2007 @ 1:15 pm
Obviously I have issues with correctly spelling the word, “pregnant.” lol
Comment by gusteaux — April 20, 2007 @ 1:19 pm
It is idiotic to think that Jack, Kate, Locke, or Sawyer will die in THIS season.
Up until this point, the writers have only killed the most minor Losties (I loved Boone and Shannon, but it’s the truth) and new characters (Anna, Libby, Eko, various Others, etc.) that were introduced over the course of the show.
To think that they would jump from that to the big 4 is just stupid and illogical.
Charlie, Claire, Sayid, and MAYBE Ben are the only ones in danger. Oh, and Naomi.
Yes, Ben and/or Juliet COULD die, but I would be shocked if that happened.
Comment by Brian — April 20, 2007 @ 1:30 pm
Desmond could die, as could Hurley.
Comment by pat — April 20, 2007 @ 1:37 pm
No one is safe. Desmond and Juliet have managed to carry the lead on the four best episodes this season, so the show’s “lead” and “face” could easily change. Frankly, I say do a whole “Hurley, Jin and Sawyer” season… they could even fight all the zombies…
Comment by tomfishstory — April 20, 2007 @ 2:00 pm
jack will become an other.
i used to like him, but this season has caused me to like him less and less. Now, he just annoys the heck out of me. he used to talk a lot, express a lot. Now he just washes forks for Juliet. Boy is whooped. Lame!
Comment by peter — April 20, 2007 @ 2:05 pm
Weren’t there rumors of a big four death before the Season 2 finale that obviously turned out to be false? What are the chances that things could be the same this time? However, if one of the big four dies, I think it will be Jack - but not the real Jack. I think the Jack that went back to the beach is an “evil twin” created in the Other’s “box” to infiltrate the Losties. The dead Jack would be revealed in Season 4 to have been a doppleganger. This would explain the time discrepancancy between Kate waking up from the gas and Jack waking up from it.
I don’t know, just a theory.
Comment by will — April 20, 2007 @ 2:15 pm
I agree that no one is safe. That being said, I think unofficially, Kate is safe UNLESS this parachutist Naomi is being set up to be the new female lead (or Juliet for that matter). Because We have three strong male leads — Jack, Locke and Sawyer — it’s much easier to believe one of them will be the one to go. Honestly though, if the Charlie thing is indeed misdirection, as some have said, I’m most worried about Hurley. They said he would have a big part in the finale … perhaps the same way Ana and Libby did?
Personally? I’d prefer no more survivor deaths and lots of Other deaths
Comment by Jeff — April 20, 2007 @ 2:37 pm
that ‘evil twin’ thing.
i don’t like the idea, but that’s what i’ve been thinking for awhile. I hope its not some cloning weirdness, but it almost seems like the only plausible explanation.
Ever since after the operation on Ben Jack has seemed so distant, unemotional, uncaring. Maybe Fox is just starting to grate on me, but i don’t know….
Comment by peter — April 20, 2007 @ 2:40 pm
I was just on a site that was saying ” Lost sneek-peeks Iphone” I know for the people who aren’t lost fans this means nothing but for the lost fans this either means time and space things is true or time on the island really does go slower than time everywhere else and by a 80 days to 3 years ratio ???? anyone else confused ??
any opinions ??
Comment by DMS — April 20, 2007 @ 2:47 pm
I think since noone has mentioned twins for a while, and they made a great deal of it with the book and everything, having Jack return to the island as an evil twin is perfect. It would explain his attitude to Kate and it would be a huge surprise. Very likely.
Comment by watership — April 20, 2007 @ 2:48 pm
Maybe the others needed Sawyer and Kate for the reproduction project (as has been mentioned), and they needed Jack to create a new doctor/infiltrator from the “box.” Perhaps we’ll see Jack killed in the finale, then next season we’ll find that the Jack who wakes up in the abandoned Otherton was a “bad twin.” The real Jack is either being held in the hydra or had been taken somewhere by the others…
Comment by cap10tripps — April 20, 2007 @ 3:03 pm
I think Lost can’t survive Matt Fox leaving, due to the demographics. Like it has been pointed out, he is a big female favorite.
Yes he is on Speed Racer, but he was in 2 movies this year.
Nothing to see her, move along….
Now, if Christian is alive, I can see them taking Jack out of the picture for a while like they did with Locke.
Comment by Blackrockbob — April 20, 2007 @ 3:21 pm
All that says is that Entertainment Tonight expects Fox to return.
Comment by uhhhh — April 20, 2007 @ 3:36 pm
I think it’s fairly obvious that neither Jack nor Locke is going to die any time soon. Did we all forget the season 2 episode called “Man of Science, Man of Faith?” And how that very theme is central to both the island and the show itself? The dichotomy of Jack/Locke is central to the show, and they can’t kill of either one of them without sacrificing a major motif. I could see Sawyer dying, though that would break my heart. He’s a major enough character that it would emotionally resonate, but his story could very well be finishing up with him meeting the “real” Sawyer. I’d hate to see one of my favourites go, though.

Comment by Katie — April 20, 2007 @ 5:30 pm
I can’t imagine Jack, Kate or Sawyer going. Although I personally don’t like Jack as a character (I certainly don’t see him as the ultimate hero - he is obsessive, controlling, volatile and angry much of the time), he is considered the male lead and as such his death is unlikely even though the finale is Jack-centric and every major character (except Boone) died in their flashback episode. Kate is the female lead and one of the few women on the show, so unless she wants to leave (like Mr. Eko did) it’s unlikely she’ll die. Also, even though the whole triangle thing is getting a bit old, I think the producers want to drag it out as long as possible. (Why else would the producers have Kate “choose” Sawyer only to have her crying over Jack the next day.) That is probably why Sawyer will stick around a bit longer too. I think he has a huge female fan base (I’m one of them) some of which might lose interest in the show if he were to die. That is a risk they run killing off any number of characters. Sawyer will meet his end at some point on the show (hopefully in some beautifully heroic, yet tragic way), but I don’t think it will be this year.
From the beginning of the year, I’ve thought Charlie was the most expendable of the original cast and I still think so. Others that will meet their end sometime, besides Sawyer, will be Sayid, Locke, and either Sun or Jin (probably not both). But I cannot see that happenning this year. Besides Charlie, I can’t imagine who they would do in. Juliet and Ben are such great characters and just getting started. Naomi is new and once she serves her purpose, bye bye, but she is not a major character.
I’ve been really looking forward to the final episodes, but afte reading some of these posts, I’m a little anxious. I hope the producers aren’t so shortsighted as to do something that may lead to a short term ratings boost, but has long term detrimental reprecussions. (Give Sawyer’s fans more Sawyer before he dies.)
Comment by dana — April 20, 2007 @ 7:00 pm
Don’t know how seriously I take the idea that one of the big four could be killed off, but Juliet’s on the beach now, right? Yeah, she means it to be temporary, but mice and men, you know: plans change. Ben screws her over again, or she has a crisis of conscience, or both, and ends up sticking by the Losties. Kate, sadly, is killed, but we have a new complicated but sympathetic and hot but ass-kicking femme among us, one Jack has feelings for.
(My apologies if this is redundant; I’m too tire to read the previous comments.)
Comment by Tim J. — April 20, 2007 @ 8:39 pm
I guess the assumption is that someone connected with Fox has said “He will be doing this during the LOST hiatus”, meaning the space BETWEEN seasons. So, if it came from his camp, or even the LOST camp, Jack is off the menu for Major deaths. I do find it suspect that he is getting a third flashback, on the other hand it has been stated that the writers just had this huge inspiration and that it is such a monster of a twist they had to work it in.
Kate, as Todd echoed, is highly likely if Dominic is leaving the show and she is serious about the relationship.
Comment by docarzt — April 20, 2007 @ 9:13 pm
Who’s story has not been told in its entirety yet? Kate? We have not resolved why she knew of, and sought her real father ‘captin army guy’, or what his role is yet. I belive her story is more complicated than she just killed her step father because he was abusive blah blah blah…
Charlie? No way! Too obvious. Also, we have not come to an understanding with his relashionship with Clair. They have toyed with us way to long to erase this plot line with such a vague concusion.
Sayid? Uh uh. I belive that his destiny is to be reunited with his love Nadya. Why else would she have made an apperance in season 2. Why would they dangle this plot line, only to smash it too peices. That would be a bummer.
Ben? The show has no better villan charactor to provide conflict that Ben. Also, I Michael Emerson seems very enthusiastic with Lost, and I doubt the producers would ditch such a compelling role.
Locke? God NO!! He is the heart and soul of the show. The producers have said Locke will become very important to Losts finale.
Clair? She was never a major charactor.
Jin or Sun? …..Won’t be Sun. We have the prego plotline comin’ down the pipeline. Jin? Mabey..
Desmond? I think he is the second most important person to the island mythology, behind Locke.
Jack? His story has been accelarated this season. We know the producers toyed with the idea of killing him in the first episode of the show, to screw with people. Three flashbacks? His deal with Ben to leave the island. A most likely reuninon with his father on the island. Fox’s busy movie schedule. Hmmmmmmm…..
I doubt the’ll kill him, but I do think he’ll be leaving us for a little while.
Or mabey is’s Hurlry?
Comment by Stev — April 20, 2007 @ 10:08 pm
Hurley or Juliette, and I wouldn’t even bet on something like this.
I realize trying to make these sorts of calls is something close to retarded.
The Major death of Jack, Kate, or Sawyer seems like speculation being passed as teaser. Not worth considering.
Comment by D — April 20, 2007 @ 10:21 pm
It seems a lot of us attempt to speculate as who will die by who’s flashback is forthcoming, and who’s story has run it’s course…Has Jack’s story been completely told? Before “Stranger in a Strange Land” I thought for sure that this would be it, we would (in a way find out what happened to Jack in Thailand). With that said, we found out how he acquired ONE tattoo, but not the other. Also, did he maintain a relationship with the Thai gal? I’m thinking that something else happened while he was in Thailand, something “big” (not sure what though)…I think this third flashback will center around either his time in the Others camp or his continued time in Thailand…
Comment by Todd Anthony — April 21, 2007 @ 6:45 am
While you all make great points, I still feel it will be Sayid who gets killed because:
1)He is the most threatening character to the Others
2)He can probably never be reunited with Nadia
3)He can be killed off without any major ratings drop of the show
4)He is my favorite charater- I have bad luck……:-(
Comment by Lori — April 21, 2007 @ 10:54 am

Oh please I hope you are right when saying that Jack won’t die - I am a fan of all the four characters in jeopardy - Jack, Kate, Locke and Sawyer - but out of those, killing Jack would be by far the most horrible, and the most damaging for the show. I am well aware that many people have disliked him this season (if the writers are dumming him down to kill him….. “#

I’m kind of hoping it’s Desmond, which probably WON’T happen, but I don’t know what I’d do if Sawyer, Kate, Charlie, Claire, or Juliet died. I’ve grown so attached to them.
Comment by Claire — April 22, 2007 @ 10:40 pm
If they kill Sawyer, I am DONE. I have watchted from Day 1 but Sawyer is my man, the best character & I will not watch another ep if he dies. Kate is a complete idiot, Sawyer should go for Claire!! Why would Kate want that dull, mopey, arrogant, angry know it all Jack??? I can’t stand Jack, he can go as far as I’m concerned. I hope it’s not Sayid, either, because even though he’s had no story this year, he is awesome! He just needs some love, is all! Locke can go, too, he’s a major nutjob, but I know it probably won’t be any of the major characters…Charlie is sweet but other than some occasional comic relief, really doesn’t add much. So, if someone has to die, I vote for Charlie! Juliet is a bitch but she’s complex & interesting…I don’t trust her for a minute. Jack & Kate are better as just friends, she may fight it, but Sawyer is her soulmate, her destiny. Their chemistry is sizzling, I saw some major tongue in their kiss, that wasn’t faked!
Comment by Jean — April 24, 2007 @ 8:57 am
Locke is going to die. As one previously said, the circle closed for him. He found his nemesis, he will discover the major secrets of the island….and I tell you more…spoilers say the survivors will split in 2 groups…Jack will be the lieder of one and Sawyer of the other and a war between the groups will occur….who wins take the beach…the others and the girl (Kate).

first off we all know pple are gonna die… so,,, this is what i think—
Kate- is not going to die, she is the main girl character, and i think they are saving her death till the very end.
Jack- he is the only person in lost that i havnt predicted their future, but i think he is at least going to make it till season 4 or he is probably going to survive but we are all going to think he dies, then he will make a big comeback in season4.
Locke- no way along with Jack the whole show revolves around him!!! he is going to have a huge part in this season finale.
Charlie- Charlie has been told he is going to die since mid-season, so it would be absolutly no suprise to see him die wich is why he will not die.
Hurley- I dont know why people think he is going to die… he has to be kept for a later episode to reveal what the numbers are and maybe then he will be killed , but he has to be there when they find out what the numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42). so no Hurley wont die.
Sayid- he will not die this season, somethin with Nadia is gonna happen and ists gonna start somethin.
Desmond- not yet, hes definetly gonna die, but not this season, somethin freaky is goin on with him and all of this time travel and i think it will last till the end of Season 4.
Sawyer- sadly i have to say it, hes gonna die! he slept with Kate who is gonna either get pregnant or the lady who he allready got pregnant is going to reappear.
Juliet- i can seriously see her dying this season, she is gonna die in th finale.
Ben- is gonna die and a new badguy is gonna get intoduced and that will seperate the survivors to c who belives the others or the new people.
Comment by WIL — April 29, 2007 @ 6:17 pm

Hey guys - wow, looking at all these posts has got me thinking too lol. Although I’m not sure about what. I agree with the people who say that Jack can’t die because he’s US - it is kind of true. I wasn’t a big fan of him last year either, but it still would be sad to see him go. He’s been with us since the beginning. I don’t like Kate, so I wouldn’t be sorry to see her go. I agree that her story is pretty much done. Locke as well - I don’t like him (mostly cause it was his fault that my favourite character - Boone - was killed lol) but he’s also a know-it-all and I would be happy to see him go. I would be FURIOUS if Sawyer died. He was always my favourite after Boone, and I love him! He’s so funny! I don’t know who will die, but here’s hoping it’s Locke or Kate lol.
(and I don’t mean to upset anyone with what I have to say - it’s just my opinion, so sorry if those characters are your faves)
