Don Jensen Gives us a Sample of Catch-22’s Sweet Nector
For the first time, I think, Doc J has cut loose and gotten a little spoilerish with his Wednesday madness. For that reason I have to put the intro to his article below the spoiler barrier.
Well, it’s a Desmond episode, and a very good one at that. And while the story lacks the mythic wallop of last week’s crucial Juliet installment, by the end you will understand why it is an important story for LOST to tell. Keep your eyes peeled for the Easter egg in one of the final scenes — it’ll throw you for a loop. And yes, I just gave you a clue. (Don’t worry if you miss it — I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow morning in the EW.com TV Watch recap.)
I can tell you a little bit more. In ”Catch-22,” you’ll bear witness to some sweaty sex on the beach, a shocking act of bloody violence, and a rousing debate between Hurley and Charlie about which superhero is faster: Superman or the Flash. The latter element captures the genius of ”Catch-22,” as you can choose to interpret this fanboy throwdown in one of two ways: an amusing exercise in Tarantino-esque pop-culture riffing, or a densely loaded clue. And because this is Doc Jensen you’re reading, I choose… both options! Let me explain…

hmmm… “loop,” eh?

I’ve never commented on here before, but I just want to say this to DocArzt and whomever else works on the site–I absolutely love this website; it’s my number one source for Lost news and spoilers. You guys are doing a great job, and there’s at least one guy in Baltimore that thanks you endlessly for it!

My favorite part of that article was the last paragraph:

Comment by Andrew — April 18, 2007 @ 12:11 pm
Which theory would that be, Andrew?
Comment by Doc Jensen — April 18, 2007 @ 12:38 pm
Dr. J, does “Catch 22″ let us in on the all important question of “Who are we?” As you said in a previous post this would be the big question for the 815ers to ponder (as opposed to Charlie’s “Where are we?”)…

LOL, I just realized you gave Dr. J “Don” status (in the headline)… it’s about damn time!
Comment by ungabunga — April 18, 2007 @ 2:50 pm
Finally! The first peice to the puzzle is coming!!
My theory which I caleld like months ago is def happening. DESMOND WILL FIND THE RING! The ring he threw intot he water in Flashes before you eyes!
Thats what the loop is. YEssss I knew it would happen.
Comment by The Cobra — April 18, 2007 @ 3:18 pm
Hey Cobra, what if at the end of “Catch 22″ we see Penny (1 vote for hottest LOST babe) wearing the ring? It would be a huge gamechanger, as it would indicate that Desmond has looped back since “Flashes” or that the present scenes with Pen are actually in the future according to the island’s timeline. Then again I guess a third possibility would strengthen thetailsection’s Doc theory of dual timelines…
Comment by cap10tripps — April 18, 2007 @ 3:33 pm
The whole time thing makes my head spin. I’ve got my own theories on it. Personally, I see that damned ring coming back for sure.
I have a belief in the idea of a looping time structure as well. I just posted my whole theory on every elemnt I have thought of thus far. Time is actually the first part. So if you wanna read it to see where it would come in in my theory. The link is below.

Doc J:
You are a nerd! Thanks for the Philosophy 201 class. I have future comment, but I have been arguing with myself about it on the way home from work. I hope to have it fleshed out before tonight’s episode.
Cap:
I think the “who we are” is self-defining. If it is asked in the show because of some revelation, the question is still irrelevant. It only helps us in our quest to understand the nature of the island. They will each get to define for themselves who they are, despite their past.
No matter how they got there, no matter where they came from, they all started on the island with an erased whiteboard ready to be written on. The more important question for them is, “who are we going to be?” I think Charlie answers that soon.
Comment by TabulaRasa — April 18, 2007 @ 3:40 pm
Agreed Tabula, but the way Dr. J worded it was as if a big question would be answered, and through the answer more questions would be posed. For arguments sake let’s say they find out that 815 wreckage was found outside Snow Globe Island. A lot of questions we’ve pondered here would be answered, then we (along with the 815ers) would begin to ask why. In your sense of redemption the question is inconsequential, but in the sense of the LOST mythology the question is quite relevant…

I really encourage everyone to read Doc Jensen’s article. Something I’ve pondered after reading it is the purge. If the true purpose of the DHARMA initiative is to rid the world of god and religion (speculated in the article), then it harkens to a certain 4 toed statue. This strengthens my belief that the others are in fact DHARMA and their recruits. It was they who purged the “hostiles” who were an ancient race of biblical metaphoric fate mongerers. The statue was destroyed (a la Hussein in Iraq and Lenin in the Soviet Union) upon the successful purge. Just some random thoughts…

My friends and I where hitting the bong and discussing all of Lost’s mysteries…I think we came up with the all encompassing theory that explains everything. Kind of like string theory in Physics. But for the life of me I can’t remember how it went.

Mr. E, it went click, click, bubblybubblybubbly, deep breath, cough, cough, cough, cough, ‘ere…
Comment by cap10tripps — April 18, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
I see it in a similar way. I believe it is the others that are trying to purge god from the island (world) reflected in their ultimate god-like act in the creation of a new soul on the island. This new creation could possibly be the Ubermensch (or Superman) in Neitzschian philosophy.
Locke is submitting to the will of the island, however absurd his efforts seem to the outside world. Desmond seems to me to be the more practical form of faith and Locke seems to be the more fundamental form of faith.
I am not certain about DHARMA. I believe that DHARMA was a tool of the others to find the ubermensch. The “disease” may then be the faith that the test subjects gained while on the island, hence the purge.
Looking at it in this light sure brings things in context.

Great posts all! Sounds like everyone is as excited as I am…only an hour and a half to wait!
Doc J: Outstanding page today, as always. Can’t wait for your observations tomorrow morning that you couldn’t release today.
Cap10: I heartily cast the second vote for Penny as hottest LOST babe! And great bong impression too!
Tabula: I don’t really see Locke “submitting” to the will of the island. I see him as trying to become one with the island. When two entities share a common purpose by their free will, I don’t see submission at all. Locke is not a subbie.
Comment by gusteaux — April 18, 2007 @ 5:33 pm
Tabula: (continuation of previous thought) “Don’t tell me what I CAN’T do!” How many times have we heard John Locke utter those words? That is not a submissive statement or attitude. Nes pas?
Comment by gusteaux — April 18, 2007 @ 5:43 pm
(Further continuation of previous thought) At the very least, John Locke wants to be the island’s equal. He definitely wants to be its protector. He may really aspire to be its Master. He may also aspire to be HIM. I think from the time that “Henry” first spoke of HIM to Locke, John was not only curious, but envious. TPTB love giving us clues we won’t understand until a year or more later. Remember when (of course you do) Locke first entered the Hatch and first encountered Desmond? Desmond’s first question to Locke was, “Are you him?” And John responded, almost without thinking, “Yes!” Of course Des was speaking of another “him” and Locke was bluffing. Or was he? Was this the ultimate foreshadowing? Perhaps Locke IS destined to BECOME HIM. Perhaps he knows it. Perhaps he has known it all along. I have had a suspision since rewatching season 1 a couple of weeks ago that Locke is time traveling too. I say that becaue in a S1 episode (sorry, don’t remember which one), Locke and Boone were in the jungle excavating the hatch and he told Boone that they should return to the Caves because it was going to rain. Boone pointed out that they were standing under a clear sky. Locke held his arms out to the sides, palms up and tilted his head skyward…and it started raining. Identical to the scene in Flashes Before Your Eyes where Desmond made the same prediction under the same weather conditions, with the same results, but in London with Charlie. This is not John’s first time through the loop. Thank you Tabula, you have just inspired me to put all these thoughts together and finally conclude that John Locke is, or will be, HIM. And I think we and he will come to realize it in “The Man Behind the Curtain.” Feel free to flame away.

So Naomi WAS sent by Penny… so that means if she knows anything about the flight, it’s only in passing from the news.
And I know DocArzt will have something on this later, but that Easter egg… I’m guessing it was that photo on the monk’s desk. The old woman in it was familiar. Was she the woman from Desmond’s flashbacks?

*SPOILER*
Did you see that??!
The parachutest had an iPhone!

the old lady in the jewelry store was in a photo on Desmonds boss’s desk. i think that was the easter egg

Gusteaux -
I love it! Keep that coming.
The only thing that I could comment on is Locke seems to be communing with the Island. That’s is why I made the comment about him submitting to the Island’s will. He has no desire to leave and is doing what he can to keep everyone there. Although, what I see as communing with the island could be his own set of flashes. John was in close proximity to the fail-safe, why shouldn’t he be affected similarly to Desmond. I will ponder further.
