Lost Talking Point - Others’ Got Bank!
Not that this is particularly revelatory, but last night proved that others have some significant off island resources. Unless Alpert and Ethan were lucky enough to stumble upon a rent by the day industrial sized lab, it looks like the others are pretty well funded, or at least have some contacts that. So is the issue of whether or not the others ARE Dharma settled for you?
Just as a by the way, did you happen to notice that Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’ was playing on Juliet’s radio when she arrived at Mittelos?

Perhaps deep-pocketed taxpayer funding Doc … isn’t there a known CIA connection?

Good point about the funding, but I thought it was pretty definitely settled that they are NOT Dharma.
Comment by John Salerno — April 12, 2007 @ 6:59 am
I assumed that Downtown was playing when Juliet was looking at herself in the mirror because that is the last memory she had of her sister when they were last together. But, and this is probably reading way too much into things…could Downtown give us some kind of hint that there is an underground civilization as has been theorized? “Down” “Town” could mean a place underground. I want to say the song has been used in the show before but I can’t remember where.
Comment by bdub — April 12, 2007 @ 7:00 am
It has never been settled whether or not they are DHARMA. I think at this point it’s pretty clear that they are either DHARMA or were pretending to be them…

Another overhyped episode. Poorly written, poorly explained, not logical.
The Others with “implants”, Jack bullying the beachies to accept Juliette, and Sawyer/Sayid letting Juliett go because she knows a few ’secrets’. Hopefully next week they can get it back on track. This season has been a rollercoaster ride of LOWS (Stranger in a Strange Land- and all of the 1st 5 episodes) to Highs (Enter 77 and The Man from Tallahassee). The writers just can’t seem to get it together to piece together 5 or more good episodes in a row.
Comment by T — April 12, 2007 @ 7:46 am
Think it is significant that “Downtown” was on a CD rather than on vinyl as when released, reflecting the different time periods, and supporting “bdub’s” comment.
Also, an underground community and/or work facility may make sense for the kids with more innocent psyches providing some safety while exploring, operating, and maintaining the “forbidden” Island/Dharma energy source - RichPundit

I thought that there was a dharma/other war….and Patchy was the last dharmite…..

I say the “Others” are Mittelos employees, and DHARMA was/is a totally different company altogether. Is it so hard to imagine the cut throat reality of corporate America extending itself to a small remote island located in the middle of nowhere? Especially an island considered as important and special as this one. I further theorize that the tease in next weeks episode that references something coming to the island, refers to Halliburtons arrival. Dick Cheney is Jacob!

Totally noticed “Downtown”. It’s one of my favorite songs.
Not sure about Mikhail. He could be a Dharma leftover that is helping the others, like he said. Notice how they had to approach where he was very cautiously.

bdub - Downtown WAS used before, and if I remember rightly, it was the first episode of this season when Juliet was getting ready for the book club meeting. So it’s just being used in the same place/time, only in a flashback.
Uh, I think.

What about the fact that Juliet had to sleep to get to the island…is that due to the way in which she was transported, or is it only a method to cover up the secret location to the bat cave? If it is the former, then what happened to Walt and Michael?

I’m pretty sure “Downtown” was used a few times. Once, like Louise says, at the beginning of this season when Juliet was getting ready for the book club. I think the first time was at the beginning of the episode when Desmond was getting ready for his day in the hatch, making b/fast, working out and just before the hatch blew. Wasn’t that “Downtown”?
Uh, I think…

In Expose, Ben talked to Juliet about how they needed to get Jack, Kate and Sawyer - all three - which was why it would be tricky to try to grab all three of them. (If they only needed Jack, it would be a simpler abduction.) After watching One of Us, the reason why occurred to me. Which means that:
KATE IS PREGNANT.
That’s right - objective #2 of the kidnap, and the object of the whole charade of breaking rocks and the cages, was to get Kate and Sawyer to breed. The actual events may not have played out as planned, but the basic dynamic - Sawyer’s life is threatened, Kate comforts him on his final night - was all planned. (Sure, they could have done artificial insemination, but this way, Kate, Sawyer and the whole crew of castaways will be committed to having and raising the child, not realizing that they are doing what the Others want.) As Ben said, if mothers keep dying, then they’ll just get more mothers.
Following that idea, seems to me that Nikki and Rose are probably pregnant too (though presumably Nikki’s condition is no longer relevant).
As a sidelight, it also appears that the reason that Ben wants to keep Carl and Alex apart is, she might get pregnant…which mean she would probably die. Ben is not willing to take that chance with her.

The song playing in season two with Desmond was “make your own kind of music” by Mama Cass. And why did Juliet arrive at an airport and then wake up in a submarine? Think about that. That submarine is probably fairly slow and is travel less than 100 miles to the island. So where is the airstrip?
Comment by Charlie Lesoine — April 12, 2007 @ 12:21 pm
Wasn’t “Downtown” playing when we first saw Desmond in the hatch??

no.

Mike B … Brilliant
I like how you have deduced that the reason Ben is so hard on Alex is because he wants to protect her. Great logic!
So, maybe Ben and/or Jacob lured Dharma to the island to continue their procreation attempts.
What will be the ultimate implication of a new soul/conciousness entering the universe in a place where no souls are supposed to be created?
Comment by TabulaRasa — April 12, 2007 @ 12:49 pm
You would think that Alex would have figured out by now that Ben is not her father since no one else has been able to give birth to a child on the island.
Also, apparently Karl isn’t just some stupid kid since Juliet said that he was the one who developed Bens X-rays.

It makes sense that Ben kept Carl away from Alex b/c he didn’t want her to get pregnant. I’m looking forward to seeing Rousseau’s flashback next season and learning about Alex’s biological father. I’m sure Rousseau was kidnapped at some point, but how did she hide out for so long? At the end of last night’s episode, Juliet was either staring at Rousseau, Desmond, or Charlie…who we know may not be on the island next season. Did anyone else read that Charlie may be hanged?

Sun must have been inplanted. B/c she only found out about being pregnant on the island. So did the others inplant one in her…
And if you can’t have baby’s on the island then how did the french women have Alex??? How long have the others been on the island? Did Dhrama know how to make women pregnant or did this only start happening b/c of something the ‘others’ did?

There may be some confusion here about “implanting”. The only implanting I’m aware of is that the Others implanted something into Claire to make her sick enough to be cured by Juliet’s injection of some unknown substance. I’m not suggesting that embryos were ever medically implanted into any castaway. I suspect the fertility is some aspect of the island, like Locke’s immediate ablity to walk and Rose’s cancer remission. Though it does seem the opposite of the Others’ unexplained infertility.
Also, I don’t recall any indication that Alex was born on the island. She may have come with Rousseau as a baby or very young child.
No one has commented so far on my theory about a possible Kate and Sawyer breeding program. Hmmm - too obvious? Or too crazy?
Comment by Mike B. — April 12, 2007 @ 1:42 pm
I think it makes total sense that they want Kate to get pregnant. They probably have some way of knowing when she’s ovulating too.
Comment by Charlie Lesoine — April 12, 2007 @ 1:51 pm
Mike B -
props to you for the Kate impregnation plan. It is one of those, yeah that makes sense, moments, but there is not much more that can be said about it.
Posted this on another thread, but the implant was Dharma’s way of causing to people to buy into the conditions of the test. Remember that everyone in the swan had to take injections to prevent getting sick. The disease was part of the psychological experiment that Dharma was running.
So, the other’s lured Dharma to the island under the pretext of research, when in fact it was the others that was doing the real research on the unsuspecting Dharma groupies.
Comment by TabulaRasa — April 12, 2007 @ 1:56 pm
Rousseau said that she gave birth to Alex a few weeks after arriving on the island. Alex was born on the island. She was able to be born because the problem arrises at the point of conception, not after. Those who are conceived off of the island are fine, which is why both Rousseau and Claire were able to give birth.
Mikhail was not a part of DHARMA. He said so himself in the episode after Enter 77 as they were walking through the jungle. He said he was recruited by the Others, probably in a process similar to Juliet.

Why all the worry about “people can’t have babies on the island”? Because JULIET said it????? Isn’t she basically a lie factory?

Charlie - interesting thought on being taken to an air facility when the trip is by sub. Perhaps you gotta take a plane to get the the sub, which would make sense given that the USCG generally frowns on submarines just showing up in our coastal waters. hmmmm….
Comment by SeenMyLuggage? — April 12, 2007 @ 3:12 pm
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the problem is the death of the mothers. I don’t recall ever hearing about the babies dying. It seems like it has more to do with 70 year old wombs than anything…

Good point evangelical poet! The quarantine also the fake pacemaker, the fake village & costumes, Ethan & Goodwin pretending to be survivors, Juliet’s likeness to Sarah Jack’s ex wife and her supposedly wanting Ben dead, Ben pretending to be Henry Gale, Claire’s illness…there is way too many mind games (or possibly a long con) going on to trust what the others say or what we really know about them. I bet Juliet did not really kill Pickett on the beach just used blanks and it was an elaborate ruse to make them think of her as an outcast,(he got a new tunnel assignment) fake trial.. real tattoo to remind them she is not one of “them”(the others).
Ben said that his people had to think that they could go home and Locke would solve his problem by blowing up the sub because …..in reality they can’t go home? Did he really cure Juliet’s sister? Is he also coning his own people or is that part of the elaborate deception to just look like he is.
The truth is we saw no proof that Juliet traveled anywhere by plane…or in the sub. Perhaps it is one of Ben’s mind games and they really come or go in the “special box”. He said he described it that way because Locke would not understand what it really was. Is it the box that is really damaged. When Benry came to their camp he was after Locke so they could have been holding Anthony Cooper for along time before the sky turned purple and it wrecked everything including the “box” or the means of travel for the others. Which comes to the question of why Ben told Locke to not push the button another lie because there was a big consequence he obviously wanted to happen. Does he want everyone to be forever stranded there.
Also I was confused by Mikhail’s comment to Kate in “Enter 77″ that if they left there they would want to comeback. With the under water beacon disabled no one can come back. Why did he believe they would want to come back. Also for not being Dharma they use all Dharma food /medical supplies, the Flame station’s communication equipment , the Pearls surveillance equipment, the Hydra station, the tunnels etc. and the sub also had Dharma markings on it. WHO are they??
and more importantly are they GOOD as they claim
(because of knowledge unknown to the losties to protect them from something)or BAD (with their own evil agenda). Is Ben the man behind the curtain essentially good but a big fake?
Comment by H20 — April 13, 2007 @ 10:50 am
What I was saying above was that if CLarie needed the injections then wouldnt the french lady?? because both were already pregnant when they got to the island.
The french women would ave needed the injections if Clarie did so how did she do it? was she dharma? or once part of the others? How did she get the shots?
The Sub might not even work. It might be another Dharma prop. Saiyd thinks it was used to get the boat but it might not have been.
About Ben and Juliets sister, I dont think she was ever in danger. I think he just said that so he could trick her into staying again just like he tricked John into blowing up the sub so she wouldnt leave again.
