Lost’s Next big conundrum - The Hamster of Mystery
With the reveal of John Locke’s trip to wheelchairville, a huge void has opened in the LOST universe. What could possibly take the place of the John Locke mega mystery? Surely not what will become of Cooper. Locke has lots of knives and something tells me he has watched "Make them die slowly" once or twice.
Thankfully there is one new mystery that easily carries the weight of "How was Locke Paralyzed". I’ve code named it "The Hamster of Mystery".
The manifestation thing was just plain weird on its own, the talk of boxes, and so on. But as Ben was wheeling out to his living room, we saw the first indication that he was telling the truth. Just as he mentioned that the electricity was supplied by Hamsters on treadmills, what do we spy? A portrait of a chick looking a lot like Juliet holding, you guessed it, a Hamster. Just what is the deal with the Hamster of Mystery? When will his/her secrets be revealed? Where is Jeff Jensen with his mind blowing historical Hamster tie in? Stay tuned.

Did Juliet use hamsters in her fertility research? I’m not sure if there was any mention in her flashback episode.
Comment by bdub — March 22, 2007 @ 7:18 pm
She used mice.
That’s not Juliet in the painting. Dollars to DONUTS, that’s Ben mother, Rachel.
And the hamster’s name is Milo.
He was friends with Richard Gere.
Comment by El Prez — March 22, 2007 @ 7:25 pm
She successfully impregnated a male field mouse, but it didn’t carry to term. Perhaps once she got to the island, she tried again with a male hamster and succeeded.
Comment by gusteaux — March 22, 2007 @ 7:35 pm
That doesn’t look like Juliet at all. The facial features aren’t even remotely similar.
Comment by GodBlessTexas — March 22, 2007 @ 8:01 pm
More than likely just an inside joke. I’m sure the producers of LOST enjoy f-ing with us every now and then.
Comment by dan — March 22, 2007 @ 8:11 pm
Prez - ok, you got me, sure could use a dozen hot ones though at almost midnight.
Look people, I saw the ending, he has arms. He’s tied up!!!
Why the sub is still intact
1 - Locke knew the where the light switch was.
2 - He went directly to the bridge
3 - He was soaking head to toe when walking down the dock
4 - Subs can take an ENORMOUS amount of firepower on the exterior, 1 pack of C4 would not do it!
5 - As Locke is walking down the dock, you can see a slight surf (foam action) where the sub was. Which was at the end of the dock but anchored to the LEFT SIDE! the sub was not there. I gather Locke submersed the SUB down into the water and the placed the C4 pack to the end of the dock
6 - The explosion from two different shots (angles) show that it occurred dead center of the dock NOT to left side where the sub was
7 - When Locke was eating supper/Lunch when Peter the ladies boy showed up at his apartment, there is a frame of Military patches behind the couch. One that I can make out is this one found here. Guess what LOSTIES It is a NAVY patch.
I have not found the rest of them but I fairly certian this one is A NAVY PATCH

So maybe Locke isn’t lieing either

I don’t come to this site enough to know if this is actually supposed to be serious.
really? the hamster thing was a joke, and you know this, correct? I’m just missing the sarcasm that is difficult sometimes to convey in writing, right?

So you think that the sub is still around, and that Locke is playing a game? Intersting…
Comment by Chandler — March 23, 2007 @ 1:06 am
This week’s episode was utterly fantastic.
Alex and her mom being so close to meeting. The reckoning that will bring. Locke’s paralysis. His father being the one who cripples him (and then shows up on the island!) and Ben’s line about the magic box. All were like fresh sips of sweet milky satisfaction, straight from the swollen nips of the Great Mystery itself, whom we have all been hunting for the better part of 3 seasons. And I drank of it heartily.
I assume others noticed a copy f Hawking’s Brief History of Time in Locke’s dads spot, wtf? Did the box manifest him on the island because of Locke, or did he do it himself with quantum hoohah?
Or is he actually part of some larger involvement with Ben/Dharma, and they just tied him up to play Locke for the fool for the millionth time?
A copy of the Dark Tower in Ben’s room?! Wtfbananas!
If this whole show end’s up being a Dark Tower tie in, I will, and I quote Doc on this, FANGASM right into my pants and scoot around on the floor like a dog with dingleberries.
Enjoy your breakfast.
Comment by Jimmy Zer0 — March 23, 2007 @ 1:19 am
Hmm, I just read the Buddytv article and it seems that I misremembered where Hawking’s book was. I retract all that and am pumped that it seems likely that the magic box brought Locke’s dad after all.
Comment by Jimmy Zer0 — March 23, 2007 @ 1:27 am
The sub is still there! AWESOME! It bothered me the last two days why Locke was so thoroughly soaked… he submersed the sub, swam to the surface, and then blew up the dock! Locke knows the sub gives him the power.
Comment by John K. — March 23, 2007 @ 4:54 am
Even if Locke was never in the Navy, he certainly enjoyed role playing games and he knew an awful lot abut knives. It would seem to me that Locke is the kind of guy who would read Tom Clancy novels and then read a guide on how to operate a sub.
I second 3rdflr’s spotting of the Special Forces Patches Poster. Locke is definitely into that kind of thing.
This is from The Man from Tallahassee

You cans see the patches on the wall above the couch..
This is from Walkabout
He’s playing a military board game….

I agree with 3rdflr…Locke submerged the sub, swam out and blew up the dock….He had an hour to do all of that before Jack and the crew were set to leave…

That being said, as much as I like the forums here, some of the frontpage stuff really seems like a waste of bandwidth.

Even the canteen is in his apartment right in front of the camera.
The clock difference is a error on the set. If you notice the clock jumps back to the same time approx in the following shot. They just shot the other camera angle several hours later or even had to replace that scene when they lost the footage at the airport

Theres my man 3rdflr… i love the locke didnt blow up the sub theory… but if he was inside it when he submersed the sub, how does he get out when its under water? i dont know much about subs soo… i figured once ur under u have to come back up to get out the hatch door, right?

I don’t think there is any void. I don’t think the mystery was how Locke in the wheelchair. It’s how it is now OUT of the whellchair that is the REAL mystery.

I guess Pillrat has too much time on his hands and enjoys picking fights in order to pass the time at his office/home. Pillrat, you are also over using the Caps. If you use them everyonce and a while it will add effect to your words, but if you use them all the time it just makes you look Lazy.
Comment by Brinson — March 23, 2007 @ 8:04 am
Theory: Pillrat is about 13 years old. Also, I don’t think it’s fair to assume that a painting of a random blonde haired woman must be Juliette. It would make just as much sense if I said it was Claire. And, the hamster means nothing.
Comment by thefallguy1 — March 23, 2007 @ 8:18 am
Yo Doc, can we get a closeup of the girl’s face in the portrait? I originally thought it was a wedding photo (holding flowers), but this is so much more important. That’s not there to mess with us, trust me. If you’ve been watching the show from the beginning, you know they put easter eggs like that in there for a reason. My best guess is that it’s all about the fertility issue.
What about these two concepts. I’ll start with the most bizarre. What if Ben gave birth to Alex using Danielle’s eggs? She is definitely not letting us in on something. The second concept is more plausible and would be important. What if Ben is the only human with genetics from our world to have been created/conceived on the island? This would go a long way in explaining why the island would be so against him. It would also be a reveal that the others are not native to the island and are in fact DHARMA/Hanso/Mittelos…
Comment by cap10tripps — March 23, 2007 @ 9:07 am
I agree with thirdflr. My friends and I were discussing this as well yesterday. I would think that John could have taken the sub somewhere nearby and submerged it slightly (so that he could still exit and swim to the dock, while leaving the majority of the sub hidden underwater). With the explosion and everyone assuming the sub’s toast, no one would go looking for it.
I believe John was telling the truth about his Naval knowledge…though I think it was based on role-playing rather than real life. In Walkabout, didn’t one of his fellow RPG’ers refer to him as field general (or something similar)? Perhaps in another campaign he handled naval duties?
However, I think the wet clothes were the dead giveaway. I’m having a hard time coming up with an alternate explanation as to why he’d be wet head to toe.
Comment by Dak — March 23, 2007 @ 9:27 am
The Painting looks like Karen Degroot to me. I had a good look at Darkufos site. Also, this doesn’t seem likely the more I think about it but at first thought coudl Ben be the child of Karen Degroot and her husband Gerald.
I say it is likely due to Bens age and when Dharma was created. Who could have the cash flow to start a fake business to recruit people to live on this island? Alvar Hanso, Mr. Widemore, Mr. Paik? Who? I am satring to think that the Widmores were involved in building those Stations and maybe Mr. Paik is involved somewhere. Who knows?
Comment by Brinson — March 23, 2007 @ 9:55 am
I concur with 3rdflr as well. Great catch with the patches. I wondered why he was drenched. I do believe he was a navy man also (not just rpg). A very high percentage of foster children join the military. So now Locke has control of the sub. Hmmmm…
Comment by cap10tripps — March 23, 2007 @ 9:59 am
I think he was wet because the water sprayed up from the explosion in the water. Couldn’t sink sub and open latch to get out. Water would rush in.
Comment by Fred — March 23, 2007 @ 10:05 am
Fred- He was wet prior to the explosion..Soaking wet, which would indicate that he himself was submerged…
Comment by El Prez — March 23, 2007 @ 10:25 am
Also wouldn’t the sub be equipped with an airlock type of thing perhaps for letting divers out when it’s submerged? That’s a way fun theory.
Comment by TrillianM — March 23, 2007 @ 10:27 am
hi, I’m a vet tech. I remember from school that hamsters cheek pouches are used in tumor studies, thought that was interesting. I googled hamsters and fertility studies, and they are being used for male infertility studies. Here is one link http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/po/050919a.shtml
Comment by kristin — March 23, 2007 @ 10:55 am
I think in the episode where Locke works at the Box factory that Randy mocks him for playing the games but not being a real military.
Comment by dt23 — March 23, 2007 @ 11:04 am
Remember the scene where the hatch on the sub is opened, and Locke is looking down into it? We could be looking at the situation of Locke just lowered the sub where is was at, and left that hatch even with the water so he could still get out. Thus, leaving the sub intact for use later. He did say in the preview for next week to Jack that “every man’s entitled to his secrets”. Also, Sayid looks to be under water in the same preview messing with something.
Or maybe, Locke just slipped on the dock and fell in.
Comment by shuey — March 23, 2007 @ 11:26 am
Sorry guys — but after he is caught on the deck (and soaking wet) you can clearly see the sub over his right shoulder, just before it explodes.

Comment by Sorry — March 23, 2007 @ 12:02 pm
And to add to what Sorry just said, evacuating a submerged sub is dangerous, even at low levels. If you do it in the wrong way, you can end up with an embolism. Submariners train for just such evacuations.
Comment by GodBlessTexas — March 23, 2007 @ 12:30 pm
Sorry I don’t see it.
I doubt this a 100′ deep water slip in this lagoon! In reality I don’t think this slip has enough deep water for any sub for that matter, (it is a TV show).
I think this a giant TV prop for filming. Maybe the musuem over at Pearl Harbor let them borrow one.
And yes there is a airlock at the top of sub’s

Hey Mr Sorry-
I don’t know how you can use the word “clearly” in regards to that picture..:)
The mofo is soaking wet from something. Why go into the sub if you are just going to come out on the bottom? I would drop the c4 down the hatch and peace out…
There’s more to this and I won’t rest until it’s solved…Screw the “magic box”….”Wet Locke” is the real mystery…
Comment by El Prez — March 23, 2007 @ 1:37 pm
thirdfloor did you look at the other pics there too? who was that old lady looking into the OR? and El PRez, I am wit hyou, there is so much more to it. You wouldnt go in the water to blow up the sub, you would go inside of it and place it in the best place to sink it. There is def an air lock on the sub.

Everybody knows that the anagram for “hamster” is “he smart”…
Comment by Tom — March 23, 2007 @ 4:53 pm
Evacuating a sub is dangerous, but keep in mind the boat was pierside. On US subs you get launched from a pressurized hatch and you are assumed to be relatively deep (hence risk of embolism). Not as much a concern if you’re in the shallows. Plus this is a civillian boat.
As for Locke’s Navy background, those are Army patches on his wall. Navy command patches only have the ship’s name. Still, he could have been aboard a sub if he was special ops.
Even if he didn’t know how to operate one, he might have learned how to blow one up.
Comment by Gil — March 24, 2007 @ 6:58 am
The woman in the portrait looks a lot like Karen DeGroot. There’s a comparison between her photos and the woman in the painting at the following link:

Comment by Kay — March 25, 2007 @ 10:30 am
Good catch Kay. That looks exactly like Karen Degroot. I’m thinking she’s Ben’s mom. This confirms my belief that the “hostiles” are actually DHARMA. It was DHARMA who purged the natives. Thanks Kay…

Thanks, cap10tripps, but I can’t take the credit for it. I don’t know who is responsible for putting Karen De Groot’s photos next to the painting, but I’m glad they did. It blew me away when I saw the resemblance….
