Crossing Mr. Locke
They are called “crossings” according to executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof. They’re those moments every die hard fan of Lost spends hours in forums discussing. The moments when, usually during a flashback, we find that one of our beloved characters has “crossed” paths with another character connect to the island. Sometimes characters recognize the people from their past (e.g. Jack recognizing Desmond), but most often, they do not realize their connection at all (e.g. Jack and Claire are siblings) and therefore perhaps, they miss a key component to figuring out their role on the island.
Yet “crossings” are not limited to the world of Lost. Recently, while watching Joe Carnahan’s Smokin’ Aces (2007) I had the pleasure of seeing an onscreen “crossing” between two Losties in another reality when Matthew Fox, better known to fans as Dr. Jack Sheppard, played Bill, a Las Vegas hotel security director who was killed by the head of the Mittelos Corporation, Mr. Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), who was disguised as Pasquale Acosta in this reality. With that one scene I began to wonder, “How long has this struggle been playing out in alternate universes?” Where else have we seen “crossings” but did like our dear Losties, didn’t realize what they were when they happened.
I began my research with the man of mystery featured in this week’s episode The Man from Tallahassee, John Locke. In John Locke’s previous life, incarnated as Terry O’Quinn he attended Central Michigan University and the University of Miami. He had a wife and two sons and also loved to play music and sing (http://www.lostpedia.com).
But John Locke has gone by many other names and has possibly crossed paths with more than one Lostie.
John Locke has possibly crossed paths most often with the recently deceased Other, Danny Pickett, a.k.a. Michael Bowen. They may have first crossed paths with Jake Styles and Jason McCabe (CBS Jake and the Fatman), but it wouldn’t have been their only brush with one another or the law. Danny was a vigilante cop and Locke was Sergeant Nicholas on Shoot First: A Cop’s Vengeance (1991 TV). Later roles were switched when Locke was suspected of murder as Admiral Truman Hager and Danny was a police man in Visions of Murder (1993 TV). But then Locke ran into Danny and other Losties in the world of Matlock., where Danny was Jay Reynolds, a man involved in the assassination of the local mayor, Doctor Leslie Arzt was A..D.A. Sadowsky, Marshall Edward Mars was known as John Page, Goodwin was known as Kevin Gilliam, Mikhel (whom Locke tossed to his death) was a Federal Agent, Tom was from Matlock’s hometown and was better known as Martin Jensen, and Kate’s mother, Diane, dealt with hucksters (something Kate should be familiar with) as Jane Barnes (http://www.tv.com/matlock). John? He was eccentric millionaire Malcolm Engle, who bet Matlock couldn’t solve the perfect murder.
But Matlock’s world was not the only one in which John Locke ran into Diane Austen. John was Harris Wiley, the owner of a lumber company, and Diane was Melissa Brewer. They were both looking for Justice in a Small Town (1994 TV). They met again in the world of plastic surgery as Hersch Lawyer (Locke) and Terri (Diane) in Breast Men (1997).
In a “crossing” so easy to miss if you blink John Locke met Bea Klugh in Vegas when MacShayne: Winner Takes All saw Locke as a recently retired cop named Danny Legget and Ms. Klugh was simply a casino cashier.
John Locke may have crossed even more paths, most notably in the worlds of JAG and Navy NCIS. Combined he may have ran into – Claire, Alex, The Marshall, Ethan, Dr. Arzt, Karl, Goodwin, Sawyer, Marvin Candle, Juliet, Rose, Pickett (again), Nadia, Jae Lee, and Hurley’s mother, Carmen. But it would be either with the Crypt Keeper (Tales from the Crypt) or in the court room (Law & Order: CI) that Locker ran into his father, Anthony Cooper. And perhaps it was within the same crypt that they both ran into Helen.
Perhaps you have some “crossings” with John Locke you’d like to discuss. The man certainly has gotten around in many lives and many universes. Why is it that he doesn’t seem to share any other universe with Jack or Sayid, or Kate, for that matter? What about Boone, Charlie, or Eko? If you have some other “crossings” you’d like to discuss then be here next week as we trace the many lives of Nikki and Paulo to find out just who they might have crossed in Crossings Exposed.

He was in a Miami Vice episode with Paulie from the Rocky movies but I don’t suppose that counts for anything.

Locke was, of course, the flight 815 pilot’s boss when they worked for the CIA tracking down Rambaldi information and fighting against SD-6 and its many incarnations..

so, is this what we’re going to get from now on? ramblings of completely pointless blog articles about stuff that, for the most part, is common knowledge. you mean terry o’quin starred in shows and moves before lost? wow, i didn’t realize…
i guess we’re going to get a lot of this once summer rolls around because this site is going to be bare bones dry until winter next year.

In the movie “Frequency” the character Dr. Jack Shepard crosses paths with the actress who plays Juliet.
Weird huh?
Comment by DrZ — March 19, 2007 @ 7:00 am
Terry O’Quinn was in Earth 2 with Clancy Brown (Kelvin).
Earth 2 follows a similar plot like Lost.
(Crash survivors, mystery people, someone who can’t walk can after the crash, the planet was alive, etc).

Tim Allen plays a Jack Shephard in the horrible film “ZOOM”

when i first saw him on LOST, he reminds me the captain Michaud who explode with the BOMB, then later on find out he was on some previous episodes being an alien, but that’s just trivia_

There’s also the lil’ matter of Michael and Eko having served some hard time together in a maximum security penitentiary. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sawyer was locked up with them somewhere at the same time.

Usually I love the posts on this site, but this is not related to lost at all, I wouldn
Comment by Ed — March 19, 2007 @ 8:11 am
Wow, this might be the single most useless correlation of all time. Honestly. What do actor’s TV credits have to do with Lost? What a waste of time. Go outside or something.
Comment by Mike — March 19, 2007 @ 8:18 am
Wow. Actors work in multiple productions and projects during their careers. Some even know the same producers and casting directors. Fantastic observation.

Poor Merl..I bet when you were writing this article, you were thinking “This will be cool…people will love this kind of stuff”
turns out not so much…but I enjoyed it…and I would like to point out that it was very well written…

El Prez,
Some people like only spoilers, theories, interviews, and maybe some fan fiction. I thought it would be a nice diversion. Something fun to ponder without having to overanalyze anything. I mean, does anyone expect to come to the same website everyday and find those things in constant fresh supply? It’d be asking a bit much.
Comment by Merlboroman — March 19, 2007 @ 9:33 am
speaking of “crossings” am I the only one who noticed Jack mopping in the hospital when Claire was visiting her mom at the end of Par Avion?
Comment by Amanda — March 19, 2007 @ 9:53 am
i agree that spoilers can’t always be forthcoming. why is everyone so negative about such an innocuous exercise? Its a fun/lame way to pass some time. Strange
Comment by peter — March 19, 2007 @ 9:54 am
I just want everybody to know I’m not the one holding the gun to your head to read every last post here. Jesting aside, I like the piece! Folks, seriously, give diversity a chance. If this isn’t your cup of tea, wait for the next post, maybe it will be! But for sure, expect the volume of content to increase and with it the range of subjects. Or I could start copying and pasting like 99% of the other LOST sites? (Don’t get offended, there are thousands of them, so that leaves room for a good hundred or so with some integrity.)
Comment by docarzt — March 19, 2007 @ 10:00 am
uh, i just checked par avion on abc.com. That janitor dude does look a heck of a lot like jack, but i don’t think its him. Kinda like the spiderman/punisher supposed cameo that is, supposedly, thomas jane’s stunt double from the movie?
anyways, i have a question, is there really a legitimately put together theory on Christian having an evil twin? I’d like to read it if it exists. I’m starting to think that it might have credence, but who knows!
Comment by peter — March 19, 2007 @ 10:03 am
The fact that people are COMPLAINING about this article is one of the single saddest things I’ve ever seen. No, it’s not a revelation, but it’s a fun diversion and quite honestly since when does any fan site owe its readers anything. We come here because we like to know about all things LOST (including its actors) and now people are complaining because this isn’t the ‘exact’ thing they feel like discussing! Aaaah! Why are people so easily annoyed! Why am I annoyed by people getting easily annoyed!?
I for one, was happy to be reminded that Elizabeth Mitchell was in Frequency… I had entirely forgotten.
Thanks for the discussion, MerlborMan.

The real waste of time is posting “this is a waste of time.” If you don’t like this sort of thing, move on to the next. It’s what I would have done if there weren’t so many haters here. It’s like someone buying a Marilyn Manson album just so they can go burn it at some demonstration. You’re involved in the thing you’re against. While Manson profits from this sort of thing, Mel and Doc and the others (no relation) are in this purely from a fan’s perspective. Keep that in mind before wasting your own time to bash what they do.

>If you don’t like this sort of thing, move on to the next
this is a topic for a WHOLE other forum, BUT, the advent of the internet has basically made it impossible for people to just leave things alone. Why leave something alone when you can post your thoughts, real or not, controversial or not, in a totally anonymous setting and, with any luck, stir the pot up and watch everyone get in a huff? Its the greatest thing since sliced bread factories!
Go look at Craigslist, the politics forum is basically 5% crazies
10% people who really want to talk politics but have nothing substantive to say
10% people who want to talk politics and know their stuff because they read right or left wing web sites
90% trolls
ps-i never said these groups were mutually exclusive!
so, people, it seems, have been rendered, in a matter of years, completely incapable of just keeping ridiculous, pointless thoughts to themselves.
my 2 cents

Merl, I apologize if I came off critical…I said I liked the article and that it was well written…I suppose I should have started with that…
In support of your article, I would like to propose that Jack is Walt’s father, as he was cannodling with Walt’s mom, Susan Lloyd who was also Grace Wilcox(played brilliantly by Tamara Taylor) on Party of Five….
Comment by El Prez — March 19, 2007 @ 12:48 pm
Hey Prez, do you think Locke could be looping between the hatch explosion and the building blowing up in “The X Files” movie?
Comment by cap10tripps — March 19, 2007 @ 12:54 pm
El Prez,
I appreciate you comments. I was repsonding to your post because your’s was the only one that was directed toward me. I think most people get the point of the article.
The others…well I’d say I hope you like my next one, but since I’m not going to write anything with a bunch of spoilers, theories, or indepth analysis (wait…I might do that one, for example why Locke, Hume, and Rouseau?) then you’re probably not going to want to read anything else I contribute. And that’s fine, but if you feel the need to say you don’t like it, give a legitimate reason other than “waste of time” or “who cares.” I appreciate criticism or applause as long as they have merit.
Comment by Merlboroman — March 19, 2007 @ 1:25 pm
THIS is my game. I love doing actor/TV/movie “crossings”. Great piece…who knows what other possible combinations we may have missed…
Comment by JackTheHero — March 19, 2007 @ 1:55 pm
I appreciate the honesty Mr Merl….I’m looking forward to whatever else you contribute…
Cap10..It wouldn’t surprise me if Locke hopped into a DeLorean, screamed about the flux capacitor and punched Biff right in the face and then blew the whole barracks up….the next day, we’d have a theory about it..:)
Comment by El Prez — March 19, 2007 @ 2:22 pm
Well Jack, as I took a brief glance over some of the paths other Losties have crosses I’d say I could write an article for each of the main characters from Season 1 over the summer. I’m going to do a Nikki/Paulo one for next week’s episode. Then Kate. BTW - check out http://www.spoilerfix.com to see who might be “crossing” Kate’s path in her flashback.
Comment by MerlboroMan — March 19, 2007 @ 2:31 pm
The article was cool, but as a suggestion, if you do another one of these, how about some sort of infographic, like a web, or a map or something? If you want I could do the graphical part, just send me any crossings you have and I’ll whip one up.
Comment by Jimmy Zer0 — March 19, 2007 @ 2:40 pm
If you look really carefully at the legendary “Mos Eisley Cantina” scene in episode IV of Star Wars you can see a young Terry O’Quinn in the corner.
He’s playing a futuristic version of buckaroo with one of the sand people.

Who cares? Well I certainly do. Who the hell do these people think they are telling you what you can and can’t do here?
Maybe it’s just because John Locke is my favorite character, but I really enjoyed this.
Comment by Mark — March 19, 2007 @ 4:45 pm
i thought this was joke…nice little article for me…apart from you left out the Michael/Eko Oz refrence, as has been mentioned…not to mention quite a few fringe members have crossed paths in 24 and Heroes!
i hope the people posting “this is a waste of time” get the irony of them actualy using their time to post that…
Comment by carlos — March 19, 2007 @ 5:54 pm
Umm… this is almost as dismal as the show has become.
Stuff like this added to the fact that you haven’t even posted easter eggs in weeks makes me think EVEN YOU know the show blows, but, your afraid to say it out loud. Being able to interview Lost people might be nice. But the truth is, they (well, the writers) are letting all the fans down hard. And we are all allowed to say it- including other blogs. You want to kiss ass and post dumb crap like this. How about something that gives us hope that the show wont always blow?
Comment by Jess — March 19, 2007 @ 6:54 pm
Seriously? It’s Jon’s job to spin Lost so it’s more palatable to you? Nothing wrong with the article except it wasn’t what you had expected? What don’t like new things? I appreciate the people who took the article for what it was worth and I’m scratching my head at the people who had issues with it(btw - this article dealt with only paths Locke may have crossed). I mean if you only come here for the spoilers, theories, interviews, Easter Eggs, etc…then why bother commenting on this article. Just skip it. It’s not like the other stuff is going away. It’ll still be here.
Comment by Merlboroman — March 19, 2007 @ 7:01 pm
“What don’t like new things?”
Doesn’t that basically sum up the motivation of all the supposed LOST fans who’ve been nothing but whiny little critics ever since the end of the first season?
Comment by Lance — March 19, 2007 @ 11:58 pm
Cool story, you went VERY in depth with it, I’m quite impressed.
Comment by tanside — March 20, 2007 @ 1:25 am
Jess, do you have any idea how rediculous it is to go on a website like this one, read the blogs, then post one to say how the show “blows.” The fact that you are taking time out of your day to do this speaks volumes. You are either still enthralled within the LOST universe or you need to find something better to do. I know most of these people who think season 1 was so much better (I’m not one of them) and that it’s going downhill are frustrated, answer starved, impatient, and generally thought by now we’d have some big answers. THAT WOULD RUIN THE EXPERIENCE THAT LOST PROVIDES. Just take each season as its own short story that will all come together and reveal those big mysteries (in the vein of the “Green Mile” series). If you can’t do that, then wait for the DVD’s so your impatience can be satisfied by not having to wait a week to see what piece falls into place. As somebody stated before, do you realize the irony of taking the time to come on here to complain? If you’re really that upset write ABC. I don’t really believe that all of you frustrated fans dislike the show. You’re more like a crackhead who lives somewhere that’s dry, so you only get your fix once a week…

I can’t help but laugh at the comments posted on here. If you don’t want posters to COMMENT on an article then turn off the comment feature. Why get upset if the comment is not to your liking?
If you really didn’t like the article just move on to something else. Why further “waste your time” replying to said article? I think both sides need to lighten up.
