Not Coming to a LOST Book Store Near You: Rick Romers Vision of Astrology
In the promo pics for the upcoming episode of LOST ‘Left Behind’, we have a shot of Claire intently reading a mysterious book: ‘Rick Romers Vision of Astrology’. Before you rush out to Amazon to try to find a copy, let me save you some trouble. For once, this is not an earnest literary reference. Read on for the surprising details.
The books author is also the name of LOST’s chief set designer, Rick Romer. The connection was unearthed while googling his name, which subsequently resulted in numerous articles on the Hawaiin based set designer and his work on the set of LOST. So if your wondering why your countless hours of searching for the book by title have not paid off, now ya know!

They probably threw that in there just for giggles to see how long it would take before we realized it was a fake…

I think its kinda cool that they stay true to the characters intrests… in season 1 we found out that Claire was into astrology… and now seems she finally found a book about it

Actually, I checked the screencaps, and that is the same astrology book she was reading on the beach in Confidence Man when Charlie came with the imaginary peanut butter. That’s some good continuity there.

To me, this means that the author’s work (as before has been important)- ISN”T important, here, but, rather, the more general principles of astrology that ANY author would cover. What about THAT would have a tie- in to the show… Just things being related to cosmology… with the star showing up on the show all the time?

Well, to quote the late Darryl Martini (a.k.a. ‘The Cosmic Muffin’): “It’s a wise man who rules the stars, but a fool who’s ruled by them!” For anyone who is really interested in astrology, any of Maurice Cotterell’s books will give you a wealth of insight about the science (yes, SCIENCE…..how all life is affected by astral bodies, hence the name). Astrology works at a quantum level and influences how we interact with others and their environments - plus, many people with an interest in someone else even other than romantic, no matter what their inclinations are toward belief or dismissal of the practice, will invariably consult an astrological resource…..

Would the location of certain stars/constellations in the sky not give at least a GENERAL idea of one’s location on the planet? I mean, I don’t know my astrology or astronomy too well, so the sky could look the same from Australia as it does from Hawaii for all I know, but does anyone have evidence to prove otherwise? It just seems like it would fit in with Claire’s “alternate” kind of theories regarding how to be located considering her tagged bird theory.

Yes, Look, someone with enough knowledge of the stars might be able to determine their approximate location given the time of year and the placement of constellations.

The time of the year is not very helpful in determining one’s location on the globe. A knowledge of constellations or stars (Polaris, equatorial stars, etc) would easily reveal one’s latitude. Longitude is the tricky part. You’d need and experienced navigator and a timepiece that has kept perfect time since leaving Sidney. An excellent mini-series on the subject is “Longitude”, starring the guy that plays Dumbledore, Michael Gambon… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192263/
