Official Lost Podcast Recap: 2/20/07
Besides playing the banjo, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof revealed the following during this week’s podcast:
- Desmond was given an opportunity to change things, but he was course-corrected and didn’t change anything.
- Yes, he really did go back in time and relive those events, and change some events.
- This “flashback” took place before he was discharged from the military, and Mr. Widmore’s comment about having any military experience may have made him join the army.
- When the old ring lady says that if Desmond doesn’t go to the island and push the button we’ll all die, she meant the entire world.
- Rousseau knows more than she seems to, and Rousseau may have a flashback in year 4, and may appear in someone else’s flashback in year 4.
- Carlton is a really good banjo player.
- Juliet was not looking at her own X-Rays that Alpert shows her. No time-travel for Juliet.
- All the big mythology stuff has been worked out, but the intricacies of how it will play out has not necessarily been planned. The writers knew that Desmond would be pushing the button and saving the world, and would eventually use the fail-safe key, and then eventually wind up with special powers, but the part in between about the time-traveling flashback hadn’t been at that point. For instance, then had Penny’s picture when Desmond was introduced (not the same actress at that point, though that has been corrected) so they knew that Penny would play a part later on.
- The teddy bear being dragged by one of the children in “…And Found” is no reference to “The Lost Boys” and we’ll see that teddy bear again.
About next week? Here’s what they said:
- We’ll see some familiar faces, such as Cindy, the flight attendant and the teddy bear.
- Tallahassee is a “hell-mouth”, where a lot of the characters have crossed paths and had bad things happen to them. They don’t have anything against Tallahassee though.
- An upcoming episode, “The Man From Tallahassee” will not cast a favorable light upon Tallahassee.

Finally! Some answers as to if Desmond really did go back in time or not. Not that this answer Is particularly useful; opening up a whole new myriad of questions about who the ring lady was, or what implications his changes will have. Or the fact that both Penelope and Desmond have a copy of the picture, but Desmond took the one from his “flashback.” Is there some kind of parallel dimension thing going on? Once again, some implications are made about the significance of events happening on the island directly affecting events in the real world, but now we have to ask, what is the real world?. Obviously we all now know that we see the teddy bear again, and what Jack’s tattoos mean, and we did see Cindy again, but what did that mean? Also, we now know that “The Man From Tallahassee” is a Locke episode. Anthony Cooper (Kevin Tighe) is in it, as is Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell). What is Alpert’s connection to Locke?
I’m going be doing this recap of the Official Lost Podcast every week that Damon and Carlton are on it. The past two podcasts have not featured either of the two great men at all, though they were very interesting. I eagerly await the next podcast and I hope you find this article interesting. Though probably not this one, because you probably knew all this stuff already… Except that I have a sneaking suspicion that Carlton wasn’t playing the banjo at all.
The Official Lost Podcast is available on iTunes and at ABC.com.

i mean no offense, but isn’t this a bit….old?

Yes it is, but I figured I would start with the latest one to let you all know what it would look like and get some feedback on whether this would be something people would be interested in. I know it’s old. It is three weeks old, but it’s a start.
Comment by DavidHume — March 11, 2007 @ 11:23 am
oh, i getcha. Yes, I like how you’ve formatted it, well worth doing. However, may I advise you don’t post any more til the poll thing is over? No offense intended, but we don’t want people missing a poll like that!

At the beginning of the show the writers said that everthing that happened on LOST could be proven scientificly. How can time travel be scientific. It’s impossible it defies laws of physics.
Comment by lost815 — March 11, 2007 @ 12:05 pm
I may be talking rubbish here, but remember, the laws of physics were defined by a human. I’ve always believed we have no real idea what is possible and waht isn’t. How can we define what is if we have no clear definition of our boundaries?
Comment by cerberus — March 11, 2007 @ 12:10 pm
The way he travels time (conscious mind, not physically) seems like it could be possible. Of course we have no way of knowing this for sure, but if you believe in the possibility, then this is a great way to explain it.
Comment by cap10tripps — March 11, 2007 @ 1:33 pm
Actually, I asked Jeff Jensen about the science thing along time ago and he had, himself, verified through Carlton and Damon that the science comment was either not made, or if it were made it has since been canceled. So science is not a factor. Even if it were true, differing ideas of what science means would come into play. It could simply mean that the facts will test true within the universe of the show.
Comment by docarzt — March 11, 2007 @ 1:39 pm
so time travel is actually quite possible in the context of the show?
Comment by cerberus — March 11, 2007 @ 1:41 pm
Hi cerb!
It’s me Josh from stationzer0!!
This is pretty old, you might wanna post the other ones soon so people don’t get confused!
But thanks for posting anyway!
Comment by Josh — March 11, 2007 @ 1:58 pm
hey josh, how are ya? Saw you beat everyone else to the punch on the new ABC promo: nice one
take a look up: he wanted to start with the latest one and get opinions on it.
Comment by cerberus — March 11, 2007 @ 2:01 pm
i lie, I lie, that was actually matty. No praise for you Josh! :p

I’d be careful with wordings…no one says Desmont ‘Time Traveled’…what they say is that those events actually happened to him in 1996…implying that he either a) time traveled or b) was flashing back to how things happened which opens up a very different can of time travel worms.
Comment by wedestroymyths — March 11, 2007 @ 2:28 pm
correct me if i’m wrong, but i was sure that in that podcast the producers DID state definitively that desmon had travelled through time?
Comment by cerberus — March 11, 2007 @ 2:29 pm
Yup, no praise for me!
Okay, I did beat DarkUFO on a Rodrigo Santoro interview today! (that’s like the first thing…)
Btw, the producers DID say that Des time traveled!
But also a few days ago I was gonna post a Par Avion preview and I didn’t see it on Darks page, but 5 minutes later when I was done grabbing and about to post it was up on Darks site…
Oh well!
Comment by Josh — March 11, 2007 @ 3:15 pm
That’s actually a picture of a banjo-style mandolin, not a true banjo. And actual banjo would have a much longer neck and different tuning key configuration. Long-time reader, LOVE the site, just being a jerk. Keep up the good work.

Here’s an excerpt from Damon’s discussion…
“did it really happen? yeah, i think it really happened. one of the things that we try, very rarely to do is to play something that’s only been imagined or dreamed and I’d say in the global sense of things DESMOND BACK IN THE YEAR 1996 ACTUALLY HAD THAT EXPERIENCE…”
That could imply time travel, or not in the context of the episode. It means, pretty much, that there needs to be time travel somewhere in the show (perhaps a loop) but they never said specifically that Desmond time traveled in that episode. In fact, Damon refers to the events of 1996 as a Flashback numerous times in the podcast, implying that it was a flashback to 1996.

i think whether this stuff can be explained with science is by the by, this is a tv show!!! and anyway, the whole time travel thing they’ve portayed in the show can be portrayed in a number of ways, in his mind, actually going back in time, or as the doc said above, parralell universe stuff, which is what i think is going on. that maybe the immense power released by the magnet is tearing a whole in the fabric of space/time, shifting people around.
ill admit again that i thought the time travel thing was bogus because locke didnt go back, but then i remembered season 1 when locke all of a sudden predicts its going to rain, and it does.
whatever happens, im loving the way s03 is panning out now:)

Good idea with he podcast’s recap! However, it would be nice to have them the same week they do appear on the Net… Keep up with those good ideas (and interviews too!)
Comment by Rapha — March 11, 2007 @ 6:29 pm
I thoroughly enjoyed the recap and found its off-timing to be a positive. The podcasts are great, but I do admit to taking them somewhat for granted by forgetting alot of it, so this was a good reminder as to what was discussed - plus, good to see the writer getting in on the humor (banjo!) whereas most recappers on other blogs totally blow the concept of the podcast by dryly recapping the news bites revealed.

Forgive me, as I must have just spaced on this piece of information. Who is Richard Alpert?
Comment by Greg Flynn — March 12, 2007 @ 8:57 am
Okay, I remember, sorry. He’s Mittleos. Very interesting, maybe there is a connection that has something to do with John’s dogs being tired.
Comment by Greg Flynn — March 12, 2007 @ 8:59 am
I don’t remember any comments about how everything can be explained by science, but I do remember Damon saying at the ComiCon interview that Season 3 will start to show a more scientific explanation about some things. That doesn’t imply that *everything* is scientific, and from the sound of it, they don’t intend for it to be anyway.
If nothing else, Locke is convinced they have a destiny (and this seems validated by certain people’s reactions to the characters, such as the psychic with Claire and the tattoo woman with Jack). To explain it all away would take away from this mysticism.

“…then had Penny’s picture when Desmond was introduced (not the same actress at that point, though that has been corrected)…”
Did they edit her into the photograph in the episode “Orientation” for the DVD release. I first saw this episode on DVD (after seeing the S2 finale) and could swear it was her in the picture.
