Mac’s on Lost
I love Macs. I’m writing this on a Mac. When I was first watching some of the bonus features of Season 1, I noticed in one of the Making Of featurettes that JJ Abrams
was writing the script on a Mac. I was watching it on my Mac at the
time, and I was thinking, “Damn! That’s cool.” It gave me a bit of a
connection to the show. When Season 2 came out on DVD, the bonus about
the making of Fire + Water had the creative staff at meetings with
their trusty Mac laptops.
Now, Macs also have a different role. Larry Fong, a cinematographer
for some of ‘Lost’ uses his Mac to speed up the editing process.
According to the article, he’d take some stills from filming, and as
the footage was shipped to California, he’d already have edited his
stills and emailed them to the post-production team before the footage
arrived. They’d know just what to make it look like, and get straight
to work. It’s pretty interesting to me that the editing team will already know what they are doing to the footage, before it even gets onto a plane. As cool as what is going on in the show is, I can’t help loving the behind-the-scenes aspects of Lost.
And, of course, we can’t forget that even DHARMA trusts Apple with the safety of the world, seeing as the Swan computer is an Apple II Plus.

Computing platform fanboism? What is this, Slashdot?
Get it off.

Richard Lennox, I imagine you as Richard Simmons’ evil twin.
DavidHume, this article was a delight. I think you’re fitting in quite well. Thanks again for some free entertainment/information.

I hate Macs.. they try to do everything for you. They think they know better than you how you want things done. To use them right, you have to learn how IT wants to do things.. rather than training the computer do to things your way. If you don’t think that way, or know computers, that’s one thing. It also has just one mouse button, I feel like I’ve been crippled when I use one(HELP! ALL MY FINGERS ARE GONE BUT ONE! Macs are a big wizzard. I love my IPOD, but it works the same way, they train you instead of you configuring it. And ironically the only computer I’ve had trouble connecting the IPOD to has been a MAC. At least they upped their OS to something decent with X.

Jesus, more Mac crap?
One thing PC users can do that Mac users can’t…
Comment by Bauer — March 9, 2007 @ 4:16 am
I have said it a thousand times.
Macs are computers for those that want to create something without knowing anything about computing.
PC are the computers for the enthusiast who can’t create anything without knowing about computing.
Its the difference between the crew chief and the driver at Daytona.
So regardless of your opinion of the OS/hardware…..the fact remains you would not watch LOST or most TV shows or films, read most magazines, newpapers or websites without MACs being involved in the creation process!!!
But before you MS fans hurl, most of the internet is run by UNIX, LINUX, Novell and Microsoft.
It takes both……I love both.
Personally I like the behind scenes stuff. Stop flaming a fan who likes his mac and the show….I am sure there is no Mac commercial going on!

Wow Tom T, those are some really intelligent comments. Your comments make no sense. Why do you even care to post such idiotic comments if you hate Macs? Don’t you have a virus or Spy-ware checker to run? You have no idea what you’re even talking about. It’s funny to see how Windows users are the first to call people who use Macs, fanboys, but thet are always the first to express their hatred for them, even when they’ve never used one. “also has just one mouse button” Brilliant comment Tom! You must not be aware that Every Mac supports two-button mice, and have shipped with a two-button mouse for quite a while. “At least they upped their OS to something decent with X”. Wow, thats like saying ‘at least Microsoft upped their OS to something decent like Windows 98.’ Mac OS X (thats pronounced ‘Mac O-S Ten’, to all of you calling it “X”) has been out for seven years, what Mac were you using? A beige G3? To all of these commenters, get a life.

Nothing gets people going like a “Mac vs. PC” topic (which just started out as a simple article about Macs used on Lost, not some serious debate). The author was simply trying to connect Lost to something we use everyday, computers, not wax philosophically about the advantages/disadvantages of using one OS over another. And not once did he ever mention that Macs are better or that “Windows sucks, man.” Dude was just pointing things out.
Just to let you know, Tom, Macs have been able to use a two-button mouse for years now, you just had to buy them from a third-party (and Apple ships all new desktop Macs with a two-button mouse now as well). And if you really needed that right-click menu on a Mac, just hold ctrl while clicking. You get the same thing.
Also, linking to Maddox doesn’t really help one’s point get made. His point is that Mac users don’t shut up, yet he goes on this big diatribe…basically doing exactly what he is complaining Mac users do.
To each his own, use whatever works for you.
Namaste

This site is just ridiculous now. The only reason I come here is that I’m too lazy to bookmark The Misfits site. You’d think that we’ve never seen a Mac commercial before.

I suppose this would be a horrible time to point out my recent Mac conversion story on my personal blog DocArzt.WordPress.com. Now where did I leave my asbestos undies…

Dusk, drop the petty personal attacks and get a grip on the concept of “focused criticism”. It’s what one does in discussion over things one cares about. I care about this site, because it’s a good resource for information exchange, theories, and discussion of a fairly complex and damned interesting television program -the only television program I bother to watch. A lot of people work really hard on getting good content together for this site. It’s important that we, their audience, applaud them for good efforts, offer specific feedback when asked for it (such as Doc asking for comments on the new style/theming the other day), and also let them know when a piece just plain wasn’t good.
This piece was filler. First off, the loose tech focus is a problem because it’s a good way to start fights. It doesn’t matter whether one’s talking about Macs or Windows PCs or Linux boxes or OpenBSD servers or SPARC workstations or any number of embedded systems you could shake a stick at, at least two bad things are going to happen: 1) you’ll get people who are pissed because they’ve got practically religious attachments to particular platforms, and 2) you’re going to get non-computery folks who are bored to tears by anything beyond a sentence or two’s mention of such technology. That’s a bad way to alienate a lot of one’s potential audience.
Secondly, there was little actual focused information pertaining to Lost in the article. Great, the production team uses Macs -shock for the entertainment industry- and then there’s a gussied-up old Apple II Plus that was featured on a major set last season. This tells us nothing. A detailed piece on what cool features they’re using from a given application to make a particular scene of the show would be sweet, as would an in-depth coverage of how exactly that Apple II Plus’s case was modified for the show and how sometimes we saw the actual display while others we saw a composite done on another system that clearly wasn’t based around a 40-column display, etc. etc.
As it stands though, this piece didn’t tell us much of anything and contained far too much editorial “I like my computing platform of choice and it’s so cool that…” etc. etc. DavidHume’s other piece on the Virgin/Sky debacle in the U.K. was short and focused whereas this was a whole lot of fluff. It’s only fair for the audience to call it, because we’ve already seen he can do better and would like to see him avoid rushing things just to get a piece up.

I think its pathetic that the Pro-Mac people are using the “Well, we’ve got two buttons now, too!” argument. Obviously, the only reason they changed is because having two buttons is better. But then why have 1 to begin with? they wanted to be different. But then they realized they had it wrong and now are becoming more and more like Microsoft.
Oh, and the “We can also put Windows OS on a Mac” is just as sad. They are realizing that they had it wrong, and Microsoft had it right.
Macs are for idiots that don’t want to learn to use a computer.
“OOh, look, we can play videos and do media so much better!” Well, the only reason that its easier to do so is because people don’t know how to use PCs. There are WWWAAAAYYYY more possibilities for image/video editing on a PC than a Mac, but its just easier on a Mac. I prefer the product than the process.
“Well, we’ve got less viruses.” You wanna know why? Because nobody that uses a Mac has anything worth Hacking. Plus, if Macs were the majority computer, there would be more viruses for Macs than for PCs. Simple Logic: Why make a virus that would only effect 5% of computer users than 95%?
The only thing Mac has going for them is the commercials. Even though they are a pack of lies, they are sometimes funny.
P.S. Ipods suck too. Look into a Zune or one of the other hundreds of portable MP3/Video players that are infinitely better. The only reason Ipods is so great is that everybody has one.
