Tailsection Redesign Enters Alpha Phase
Well the new, reader friendly version of TheTailsection has entered Alpha phase. If you want to take a look at it, you can click here. I’m definitely open to suggestions on it, There is a lot more side bar real-estate in the redesign, so that is more room to store background data… etc.
Also, we would like to renew the call for Forum Moderators. If you are currently a forum member and have experience with Vbulletin, drop me a line at docarzt@mac.com.
In addition to forum moderators, I’m looking for folks who might be interested in contributing to the front page. If you’ve read for a while, you know the editorial philosophy of the site. We call it down the middle and we comment on the news, not just copy and paste it. (Although sometimes, if an item is juicy enough to stand on its own, we throw it on board.)

Dude, listen….. I love the content of your site and all of the great info it provides. The design aspect has always been great, and the new one looks good to. BUT PLEASE get that “Real Age” banner off of there! OR, as I’m sure you need the advertising dollars to continue, get a different ad or different girl….that one that is on there is soooooo damned distracting I can hardly take it. I’ve never considered not visiting a site before due to a banner ad, but I tell ya, this may be the first. If you are able, please cahnge it. Thanks!

What’s the purpose of the DHARMA symbol in the lefthand navigation? You’ve already put each link in a separate box. They don’t need to be itemized/called out any further. With the symbol, the reader needs to look further to the right in order to recognize each individual link/item, because the symbol redundantly denotes each one as being related. The actual letterforms themselves serve the intended purpose much, much better.
If you insist on functionless ornamentation, at least add in some additional space between the symbol and the link name.
And sorry if this sounds crotchety. Seeing insistence on bad design choices in the day job makes me a bit more bitter about this sort of thing than is probably necessary. Just trying to help.

hmmm… well the purpose is just to bring a little flavor to the trim. I’m counting on the contrast of the links to keep peoples eyes off the Dharma symbols. I really think haggling over a few pixels is a little ocd… but I appreciate he input! Seems you know what your talking about, feel free to whip up an example

I really like it, especially with the white background behind the text, very easy to read. The best part is you put the navigation on the left side where it belongs, instead of keeping it on the right. Before, I really didn’t know there was a navigation on here. Nice job…

“[F]lavor”, eh? Okay, if you say so. I think it’s a weak justification, but you’re already intent on keeping it. In this case, the only thing I can suggest is cleaning it up. The way the graphic looks right now, it appears to be a dot inside of a Maltese cross shoved inside an octagon. Clean it up and you can make it look more like a DHARMA logo. Remeber, not *every* non-photo graphical element has to have that fake bevel/emboss/1998dubdubdub look to it. ;P
“…a few pixels”, you say? Have you done much testing in multiple browsers? At the default magnification level (0) running Firefox 2.0 at 1280×1024, the left-most edge of the links lie on top of the symbols. This may well be your intention, but it makes the site look unfinished. Take three seconds to fix it and your site will look 5% more professional.
Something else I’d advise changing would be to add some extra padding to the blogroll div. The content partially bleeds into the gradient you’ve got running around the edges, and it would literally be a lot more easy on the eyes if it didn’t. This isn’t an aesthetic gripe, but a complaint in regards to basic readability. Fix it and your light gray background will be meeting its intended purpose 100%.
And, one last thing, for the sake of consistency, you need to add some graphical closure that ends the bottom edge of the page in a manner similar to the top. The way things are, it presently looks as though there’s content hidden behind the advertisement getting served up at the bottom of the page. At best, it’s confusing, and at worst, it looks unfinished.

Oh, one more thing while I’m in dickheaded designer mode ;)… You’ve already got the item name (contained in the bloghead div) enclosed inside of a different shape with a different colored background. Why must the text also be a different color? It’d make more sense to have this text be the same grayish-white you’re using on the nav links and other places. It’ll certainly read easier, and it’ll make the green links located throughout the blogroll be more obviously a separate class of page elements.

Just checked things out in a few other browsers, and it’s not just the standards-oriented ones where the links are laying on top of the DHARMA symbols, it’s IE too.

There will no doubt be tons of tweaking as the week goes on Richard, shifting from an alpha state to beta does imply that it is ‘unfinished’… so you shouldn’t be surprised that there are rough edges… keep the suggestions coming though…

Believe me, Doc, I understand! My only aim in providing these admittedly blunt suggestions and observations is in trying to help you cut down on time spent trying to find them yourself. It can be damn tough finding things on your own when you’re staring at the same stuff for several hours on end. I also imagine you’ve got other stuff you’d like to do with your day besides muck around with maintenance crap on your really big fansite…you know, things like, uh, living, and breathing, and all that sort of thing.
