LOST Tricia Tanaka is dead SYNOPSIS!
Originally I told you this left little to the imagination, because it seems to cover a lot of territory. Since then, someone in the know (who is in the comments) has posted that this synopsis actually leaves out some pretty important details. So let me reintroduce this to you….
Here is a blow by blow of "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" from someone who has seen the episode. Despite the heavy duty spoilers, it does not cover it all. If you must peek… remember to tune in Wednesday for the FULL episode.
It opens w/ a young Hugo, getting ready to work on an old car. His Dad (Cheech Marin) suggests he give hope a try & just attempt to start the car w/o fixing the carburetor. Hugo turns the key, nothing.
Dad gives Hugo a candy bar, Hugo protests, says Mom says he shouldn’t, Dad tells him to live a little. Then says he has to leave, sorry he has to cancel his trip to the Grand Canyon w/ him, then hops on a motorcycle & rides off.
Cut to present day Hurley on beach, telling story of how they were captured to unseen listener, says he’s scared, lost hope, been scared a lot lately, "the only time I wasn’t scared was when I was w/ you, Libby." Pan to reveal Hurley at Libby’s grave.
Some business at the beach…I forget a lot of this…Hurley’s trying to cheer up a despondent Charlie, who’s upset about his supposed imminent demise…Vincent runs out of the jungle w/ a mummified arm w/ a key in his mouth. Hurley runs after.
Flashback to Hugo, Randy, and a newsreporter outside a Mr. Clucks. She’s doing a puff piece about Hugo winning the lottery, buying Cluck’s & employing his former boss. Hugo is distracted & freaked by his curse, waiting for something to happen. Reporter gets irritated, goes inside to shoot footage. Hugo’s talking to Randy when all of the sudden, a meteor scorches out of the sky & destroys Mr. Clucks…
Hurley finds an old VW van w/ the rest of the corpse inside. Hurley returns to the beach to try to get people to help him fix it…no one volunteers, except Jin, who can’t understand what’s happening. They trek off to the forest
Sawyer & Kate return, still bickering a bit, big reunion… Sawyer flips out about his missing stuff, confronts Desmond & Charlie, goes off to find Hurley (who drank the scotch w/ them)…
Jin & Hurley are working on flipping the van..
Flashback to Hurley returning to his mansion, freaking out about the curse, says he has to go to Australia, his mother tries to talk him down, says there’s proof that there’s no curse, "Look who’s here," and Hurley’s dad enters, after being gone for 17 years.
Sawyer finds Hurley & Jin & confronts Hurley. Hurley: "Dude, you’re alive!" and embraces Sawyer. They’re all chummy & manage to flip the van. They find Dharma beer & a map inside, apparently a road project that was underway.
I’m going to jump ahead…
Jin & Sawyer try to convince Hurley the van is unrepairable. Hurley gets an idea & runs off to get Charlie, finds him on the beach & tells him to snap out of it, he needs his help, it’ll help him get over his fear of dying…
Flashback, Hurley’s packing for Australia, his father tries to talk him out of it, yeah, he came back for the money, but that’s not why he’s staying…
Hurley convinces Jin & Sawyer to push the van down a hill, he & charlie will pop start it by putting it in 2nd. They tell him he’s crazy, they’ll die, rocks at the bottom.
They reluctantly obey, the van is pushed… (I’ll leave this scene alone)
The episode ends w/ Kate off in the forest, heading back to rescue Jack. She’s following a trail. Locke & Sayid intercept her. They want to come w/. A shot fires out, they draw, Kate shouts "Don’t shoot, I just want to talk…" Out of the darkness steps……ROUSSEAU!!
Kate tells her of where’s she’s been, who’s she’s seen, and more importantly, who helped her escape, a 16 year old girl by the name of Alex….

Jon, what is the point of publishing this? Do you (or anyone else) enjoy watching Lost when you already know what will happen? Or is it that you only care about the basic story and not the visual execution of it?
Comment by Andreas — February 26, 2007 @ 12:17 pm
Both! I like to know what happens AND I enjoy watching the show and admiring the scenery. I kind of liked this spoiler best because he didn’t go into EVERY minute detail about what happened.
Comment by Sid Barnette — February 26, 2007 @ 12:56 pm
WTF Andreas… you dis the guy and steal a little link to your blog all at once? Doc owes no explanation to you. This is his site and he can publish what he wants.

Actually, this summary leaves A LOT to the imagination. Having seen the episode, as well, I can tell you that the writer of this summary left out a couple very cool, very crucial details that suggest some very interesting possibilities. For an allegedly ‘mythology lite’ episode, “Tricia Tanaka Is Dead” may actually be an extremely clever allegory for what happened to The Dharma Initiative and what’s currently at stake on The Island. All to say, in the writer’s haste to spoil EVERYTHING, he or she forgot to dream a little, and missed the whole damn point of this wonderful, joyous, revealing episode.

Well i have an idea on what happens to the vw if you have watched little miss sunshine.Ican’t wait to see the map.

How do you think they are going to resolve Alex being Rousseau’s child and Ben’s? This has got to blow up huge at some point.
Comment by Ben — February 26, 2007 @ 2:21 pm
Andreas, your Lost Blog blows. This site trumps yours anyday and I will never go back to Lostblog.net.
Try learning from someone who knows what they’re doing.

Isn’t it possible that when Alex was taken by The Others that she was simply raised to believe Ben was her father?

Andreas, I believe in mutual respect my friend. What is respectful about questioning my motivations or dedication to the LOST experience on my own site? I hope I’m mis-reading you.
What I’ll say is the BEST full episode synopsis missed much of the episode. This is more the contours to me, and composed in such a sloppy non-story-telling fashion that to me it does not present anything in the nature of a plot.
As Jeff pointed out, every episode of LOST has an underlying theme that runs between the flashback and the islands present tense. I have a feeling it has a lot more to accomplish here then getting a car running.
Also in answer to the numerous emails… no, I have not seen this episode nor am I the author. The source is at the base…

Is lost on tommrow? You said that tommmrow?

Jon, I’m sorry if I offended you, but my personal belief is that these kind of big spoilers damage Lost. Sure, it’s your site and it’s none of my business what you publish, but I was curious to find out if you actually enjoy watching the episode as much after having read a full synopsis?
Comment by Andreas — February 26, 2007 @ 3:42 pm
I don’t believe these spoilers damage LOST at all. As a matter of fact, spoilers were much more abundant during the first season, and more precise as well… to answer your question, though, it doesn’t really impact me much. These are usually poorly written, do not capture the ‘plot’, and are no substitute at all for the ‘real’ thing. Lost crys for multiple viewings as it is, I can’t think of an episode of LOST that I have watched less than ten times. So in that cycle, these sorts of synopsis are merely very detailed episode descriptions. The true magic comes in seeing the cinematography, acting, etc, come together for the grand illusion. So no… a poorly written scrap that describes, as Doc Jensen pointed out, the major details with clumsy swipes that do no justice to the nuance of the show isn’t going to affect my viewing. It’s ridiculous to think it should. Now, I understand some people are very OCD about spoilers. I was blasted for putting Claire with black hair on the front because to that person it ruined a major surprise. That doesn’t even make sense to me… but when you come in search of spoilers, and hit that link that you know will bring them… all bets are off. So no, no offense taken… I understand the issue, but to question it might be offensive to those around you…

Fair enough. I guess it’s a personal thing of mine then.
Sorry for the trouble.

Hey Andreas… I fault no one for having passionate feelings about the show. And I respect your opinions and recommend your blog to anyone.
Comment by Docarzt — February 26, 2007 @ 8:39 pm
If you don’t wanna read the spoiler, then just don’t! It’s as simple as that, some like to know the detials early so they can notice them while watching, respect that. Geez.

Are Kate and sawyer going to reunite? I hope they do, cause in the trailer it said something about a reunion, and it showd Kate and Sawyer. Anyway I hope Jack dies,

Uh, skate fan… they’ve been reunited…

Could the argument not be made that since Lost is a show that operates on multiple levels and uses multiple layers of metaphor, that knowing the very basic plot elements ahead of time will allow you to pay more attention to the deeper stuff when you actually watch the episodes?
That’s how I do it, and it’s a lot of fun for me.
Comment by ParkwaySouth — February 27, 2007 @ 11:19 am
Personally, I love the spoilers. The more, the merrier. Like many Lost fans, I’m a bit obsessive compulsive about the show’s mythology so discussing plot details before a show airs has no impact what-so-ever on me actually wanting to see the episode.
One other point I often consider. I strongly believe that the creative minds behind the show pay close attention to reputable fan sites and blogs. It’s their job to stay one step ahead of the viewers in order to continue delivering a captivating story. I wonder how many times details or entire plot-lines have been scrapped because the the Lost viewership has been too smart? Anyway, as a few people have already mentioned, if you don’t read the spoilers, you won’t have to worry about being spoiled.

HAVE YOU NOTICED?
There are 3 islands. In the 1st ep. of S3 as the camera tracks into the sky above the Others village you can see that they are on a different island from the crashes. You can tell that the tailsection is closest to the Others village island which will be important later. Ben showed Sawyer that the Hydra station is not on the Main island. In “Stranger” the Others reveal that they do not live on the Hydra island, they only ‘work’ there. That is 3 islands, the Main island, the Others village island, and the Hydra island. The tailsection being closest to the Others village island is apparent in that camera shot I mentioned above is important because it explains how Goodwin came out of the jungle shortly after the crash. I could not find a shot of the crash showing Ethan in the first episode. It took him longer to make it across the Main island.
Comment by swamphollow23 — February 27, 2007 @ 11:35 pm
I don’t necessarily agree there are three islands despite the “map” that was posted on one site. The season 3 opening scene does not make it clear that the Others are on another island. They could easily be on the far side of the main island, hence Ben’s admonition to Ethan to hurry and get to the crash site. If you recal, ultimately it was pointed out that he (or maybe the one killed by Ana Lucia) was not wet - could not have been in the crash. If they rushed over from another island, they would have had ample opportunity to get wet and would have had to work hard to stay dry.
Comment by QuantumSam — February 28, 2007 @ 10:00 am
Don’t forget about the Other’s sub. They could stay dry that way.
Comment by jim — February 28, 2007 @ 10:38 am
The Others are definitely on the manin island - I rewatched the season 3 opener and last week’s episode, “Stranger in a Strange Land.” I perked up when Sawyer and Kate asked the kid where they lived and if they lived “on this island?” The kid replied “Yes.”
Yes, the Others live on the main island and its obvious if you watch the season 3 opener carefully.
