Will Jack Break LOST’s ratings slump?
With all the hooplah over why LOST’s ratings are down, is it possible people aren’t tuning in because of the centricity of the episodes? Since LOST returned, none of the Season One regulars have been of particular heavy focus. Surely, Not in Portland resolved the Kate / Sawyer dilemna, but the Desmond centric "Flashes before your eyes" really paid only minor service to any of the folks we have come to love.
Now, I think as far as new characters go Juliet is very well executed, and I’ve been a Desmond fan since the beginning, but it is hard to just put this idea away without wondering if there was more than just a mild impact in focusing on these lesser known characters.
This week brings a Jack-centric episode. If there is anything to this idea of the character-centric episodes influencing ratings, we’ll definitely see for sure this week.

All this talk of ratings… isn’t it most likely just the result of a later time-slot?
Comment by Nat — February 18, 2007 @ 3:56 pm
I’ll be thrilled if the ratings go up next week, but I wouldn’t neccessarily credit it to the character-centricity of the episode if it happens. Lost got moved to 10, and I suspect that more people are recording it and watching later than they were when it was at 9. Given how good Lost has been, an uptick in the ratings would just as likely be do to more regular viewers making it a priority viewing, rather than something to be time-shifted.
Besides, while Jack is [arguablely] the lead, Juliet’s been well recieved by the fandom, and Desmond is a fan-favorite.
Comment by S. A. Bonasi — February 18, 2007 @ 4:25 pm
You’re probably right, nat, of course. But just offering an alternative perspective… I’d never say Henry Ian Cusick couldn’t carry an episode because I’m a total Desmondite…

I dont think we will see the ratings go as high as they were in season 1. So, we must accept the fact and just enjoy the show. To all those who cant appreciate art, as Jack said, ‘good riddance’. I am sure that towards the end of this season those stupid critics will be eating their words.

I would guess many people share in this opinion, but i would like to share it anyway.
Lost dared to create a show that required thought, and in primetime no less. In the midst of American Idol and an endless amount of sitcoms, Lost creates a thought provoking show. They have been a pioneer to shows like Heroes. Unfortunately there are still millions of people that like to go home and not have to think so they watch some jack-ass sing a horrible song and get torn apart by three morons. I hope Lost stands it’s ground and doesn’t go to the lowest common denominator of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.
Comment by JoefromUtah — February 19, 2007 @ 7:36 am
Lost’s loss of viewers is almost certainly to do with 3 things…
a) time slot change…
b) the longevity of the programme (casual viewers that missed episodes not being able to get back into the flow of the programme an therefore giving up…unlike 24, Lost doesnt start fresh again every series) in the UK where i live it gets much less viewers than in the US but the Box Sets are constantly best sellers….
and most importantly…and tying in with the last point..
c) the downloadability of TV nowadays….
since the above points mean people watch it less in the regulated time slot, doesnt mean they dont watch it…if you look at bit torrent download sites, Lost is constantly one of, if not the biggest, TV download…since its ideal for that format, you cant miss an ep so you watch them on demand…Right now im lookin at itunes and ‘flashes b4 your eyes’…despite being aired almost a week ago, is No3 in the chart, above 24 and Heros …the only things above it are shows that have aired more recently than lost

I think it will do the exact opposite, another Jackback is hitting at the worst possible time. This will be his seventh flashback episode. And the previous ones have been so redundant and thin on new information that I feel this week could be a big turnoff. The promise is that we will learn the meaning of Jack’s tattoos. Yawn. Unless they somehow tie it into the island mysteries or plot the tattos are nothing but meaningless minutae, another case of dragging the show out. This is a big reason why the show’s ratings have dropped so precipitously. They need to build and cultivat some of the things they’ve already presented, not give us answers to meaningless side issues. Otherwise what’s next, we find out if Hurley played the tuba or the flute in the high school band? Locke; boxers, briefs, or commando? Did Claire work the register or the deep fryer at the fish shop?

As someone who has given up on the show, I can tell why I stopped watching. It has become apparent to me that the writers have no idea how to answer their own mysteries. I got the same feeling during season 6 or 7 of the X-files. Chris Carter had intimated at a huge, far-reaching conspiracy behind a lot of things that had happened so far on the show, and it got to the point where me and a lot of other viewers realized that he didn’t have any idea what that conspiracy was. It’s a lot easier to create a mystery than to resolve it, and that’s what’s happened on Lost. Not only that, but the writers have shown that they have no problem ignoring what’s previously happened on the show if it helps them get through the current episode. One of the creators said as much during an interview after the end of season 2, after we’d seen those two guys in a bunker somewhere detecting the EM burst given off by the hatch implosion. I think it was Damon, he said something like ‘Well, you THINK you saw those two guys reading the island, but what did we REALLY see?’ I realized then that this guy has no idea what he’s doing, and furthermore no reservations about intentionally deceiving his audience.

That’s actually good news for LOST fans….Slone loves to bash LOST until the next episode of Battlestar Gallactica is on, so at least we know of one Neilsen vote…Heaven forbid he miss an episode of something he loves to hate…
As far as the ratings go, if the end result is less viewers, would that really be the end of LOST? Doc, what do you think the lowest number would have to be to get ABC to kill the cash cow? 6 million people?
Do you think they’d have to lose the ever increasing power group of 17-21 year olds in order to throw this gem down the drain?
I just don’t see it happening…especially if they can pinpoint the exact stop date of the show. I think at that point people would feel somewhat insured that the end is coming and with that, some answers….
I think the writers do know where they are going with the story…as far as Jack getting another flashback, it stands to reason that the lead actor who is considered the hero of the story to this point would have a more fleshed out character than say, Claire or the one note wonder Charlie….
I get why people are frustrated and you can’t have the good comments without the bad comments….But seriously, how many people have read any fiction book and known after the first 3 chapters, how the book was going to end?
Comment by El Prez — February 19, 2007 @ 9:52 am
But after 3 chapters, I should at least KNOW the characters have ASKED EVERYONE SO FAR MENTIONED IN THE BOOK WHERE THE H_ _ _ ARE WE? WHAT DO YOU KNOW? TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW. And HOW did YOU GET here?
You know it seems silly all the discussion of loyalty of the SHOW / Fans issues / Media raves/non-raves /Nielson ratings……NO ONE has bothered to answer my simple questions I have posted on this site 3 different times.
I will stop my frustration with LOST when some character on the show not only acts intelligent but has SOME COMMON SENSE!!! So far they are ALL COMPLETE NAIVE IDIOTS. At least Ana Lucia had some BALLS.
I watch at this point because I want to know what the mysteries are, screw the characters, they have all proven to have a complete amnesia for real world common sense. Which backs some readers of the TTS opinion, that LOST is ALL a dream. Dreams have no logic and no common sense.
I agree to agree with Sloan on the post above (although I have to disagree with alot of his earlier ones), flashbacks that tell us nothing are millions of dollars of waste of programming!
Comment by thirdflr — February 19, 2007 @ 12:58 pm
I’m not sure Ana Lucia had balls…she was a girl and I’m pretty sure she had girl parts….
From what I hear, thru spoilers and episode descriptions, the writers may be posing the very same questions..why don’t these people talk to each other?? I think it may be wrong to assume that what we see on the show is exactly what we get…I mean, do we question whether they crap in the woods or bathe? Not really…the same as Jack Bauer never taking a piss in each horrific day he lives…He probably takes time to hit the men’s room at CTU, we just don’t see the minute counter as he’s doing it..
I don’t want to throw a spoiler out there but I think they’ll handle some questions pretty soon…
I mean, look at what we’ve seen so far: Charlie yelling at Desmond to tell him what the hell was going on….How was Eko killed? The island did it…yes that raises more questions but at least Locke answered it…Sayid going with Locke proved that Sayid wanted to know what Locke knew…Jack asked Juliet what Ben said, she told him and that was that….People are talking and acting more rational this year than the first year…
People on all sorts of other shows act naive as well…it’s called ‘drama’ for a reason…
As far as the flashbacks telling us nothing, give an example and I’ll bet that there will be posts verifying that they did in fact tell us something….It’s not always on the surface..sometimes feelings are expressed and it ties into the greater storyline….Yes, Jack has daddy issues…but he’s also got trust issues and he doesn’t want to be a leader…The writers have always maintained that it’s a character driven show, with an island mystery twist….
I’d be willing to bet that anyone posting negative comments on the board has never seen a cake made from scratch…That’s what LOST is…It’s a cake and currently it’s in the batter stage..”It looks like soup, not cake!!”they all cried….”that can’t possibly be any good!!!” they exclaimed in disbelief…”I’m not eating THAT!!” they yelped……and then the cake was poured into a pan and baked at 350 degrees…..”it looks like a sponge!!” they whined….then the cake cooled and the icing was applied…”OH!” they shouted…”NOW, I’ll have some!!!”…to which the baker said…”NO CAKE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Comment by El Prez — February 19, 2007 @ 1:41 pm
Am I alone in thinking that the quality of the stories has declined this season? Ratings are down because people get tired of more mysteries each week and few answers.
We need more Hurley, Locke, and Sayid, less Ben/Tom/Juliette. Really enough about the Others, they aren’t as enjoyable as the writers think.
I think ratings will improve when we see the regulars more than just a minute on the show.

Comment by Charlie Lesoine — February 19, 2007 @ 3:35 pm
I do not want to get into any arguments here, but I would like to say a few OPINIONS about “Lost.”
Flashbacks-
People often complain about too many flashbacks from certain characters ,ie. Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Hurley, Sayid. I have heard that said of each one of them at some time. Stone posted earlier that another Jack flashback now would be wrongly placed. Due to the multitude of characters and the roughly one day equals one episode format, exploring the true nature of such complex people would never work without the flashbacks. I feel that each flashback is key to the situation on the island. The island shows us what they are doing now, but the falshback shows us why someone is acting the way they do. So much of the drama of this show is built from what we see in the flashback. This symbiotic relationship requires the writers to do a certain characters backstory with events on the island that become more meaningful in context with part of someone’s history.
Answers-
People that do not think we are getting answers in a timely fashion obvoiusly have not read many novels. A good story unfolds slowly. I know that it can be frustrating asking the same questions when new ones keep coming up every episode. I have looked at everything Lost I can find to form an opinion of the big picture and I have come to realize that many of the new questions are answers to old questions. There is so much in the Lost universe that it is hard to keep up with, but that is what makes this show good. People wanted to know who and what those mysterious ‘Others’ were. One might say that was the whole second season in a nutshell, eventhough I contend Lost fits into no nutshell. Now they complain about the mini-season and too much of the others. This site has been mentioned in the media more than once, as have many other sites. So we should all be on our best behavoir as it were, here and on other postings. I am not saying that you should not express your opinions, just try to keep from adding fuel to the fire. We all love Lost or we would not be reading this post.
The writers-
All the time I see posts about the writers not knowing what is really going on. From all the podacasts I have heard and the way the story has unfolded, I believe that the writers are loving writing this show as much as we love watching it. You can hear that in Damon’s voice when he talks about Lost on the podcasts. They know where they are going and how they want to get there.
Lost is a complex show that we all love for different reasons. Some cannot get enough of the human drama and backstories that others hate, while many love to analyse each little clue to get a handle on the big picture. If you want to watch, then do. If it becomes something that you do not like. Stop Watching.

First off, hope you enjoyed your day, and thank you for your service to the country.
And for the record, I’m not a vote for Lost. I set my TV to Criminal Minds then go watch Lost over at a lady friend’s house. She likes the show, and any little tid bits I can tell her from the Internet chatter. And if I’m a good boy, and watch the show nicely and keep my snark to myself, I usually get laid afterwards. So now you know my secret, why I still watch the show and frequent the Lost forums.

“I think it may be wrong to assume that what we see on the show is exactly what we get…I mean, do we question whether they crap in the woods or bathe?”
There was an homage to this in the last Star Trek movie. People always said that you never see them using the bathroom on Star Trek. So in the last movie Zephram Cochran had a line something like ‘don’t you people pee in the future’.
But I do not believe that the lostaways are talking about things off screen. Because no one reacts to anything. As an example look at the medical bunker Kate and Claire found. It was never mentioned again. Even though it appeared to be abandoned, there were still useful items there, Kate and Claire found flashlights there. But no one ever mentions going there or using it for shelter or anything else. It’s another of those plot points that are just dropped.
El Prez
“I think the writers do know where they are going with the story…”
I don’t see where your faith in the writers is coming from. You only have to look at JJ Abrams track record for unanswered mysteries (Alias) and D & C inexperience in running a show like this to SERIOUSLY doubt whether Lost will ever get a satisfying conclusion. I hope you’re right, but given what the people in power have done previously, faith in them is not well placed.
El Prez
“As far as the flashbacks telling us nothing, give an example ”
Look at some of the flashbacks from the mini season. What new did we learn in Kate’s flashback? We knew she was married, knew it didn’t last. So what did we learn of any relevance? that she didn’t do taco night? Or that her husband was a cop? That’s minutae, and nothing that ties into anything on the island. The same with Locke’s flashback. We learned that he is a very trusting person but people take advantage of him. The same thing we learned in his two previous flashback. What new information, relevant to the island mysteries did we learn? Squat!
That’s another thing that’s ruined the show, useless flashbacks. Last season we were introduced to the Tailees. And through their flashbacks we gained some insight into their lives. But they were all killed off (except Bernard), so just what was the purpose of getting to know these glorified red shirts? IMO they were only added to the show to provide flashback fodder. The same reason Paulo and Nikki were introduced this year. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. It’s no surprise the reaction to P & N has been so hostile.

The thing I wonder is where do they get all the firewood for those numerous roaring fires they always have arond camp. It must come in another Dharma parachute drop because all you ever see are the Lostaways lounging around doing relatively nothing. But if they had to actually feed all those campfires, they’d have deforrested half the island by now, and worn that axe down to just a nub.

I personally believe the number of LOST viewers has decreased because of the new time. I still go to school, and my parents refuse to let me stay up past 10:30 on school nights, even though we’ve been watching LOST since the first episode. So now I have to watch LOST on youtube or abc.com or read the summary from here, which really isn’t the same..

I have seen every episode of the show and used to regard it as the best thing on TV. But season 3 has been so weak so far, I think the show should end at the end of this run!
I would rather have 3 great seasons than 5 that string out this story over and over - there is this kind of trap the show seems to have fallen into….you introduce new characters and it makes the show feel less like lost, so the original viewers will stop regarding it in the same way, whereas potentially new viewers won’t have time or feel the inclination to catch up on the seasons they have missed….and the central characters are now so well known that their stories no longer smack with the impact they initially did, it has been a long while since we had a memorable episode…
When the show returned after the haitus 2 weeks ago, the episode was pretty flat, we get some kind of mysterious intrigue etc but the fact remains, how many times can you hint at there being a bigger mystery without revealing something of it! It seems the writers are setting out to merely find new ways of implying something grand and conspiratorial without giving anything away! It has started to get tiresome, if the show was brave they could change things for the better.
They need to open the show wide up and present all the characters with challenges that the audience are aware of, so we know why they are there, what they have to do to get away, and it goes from being a show about ‘what and why? To how? and when?’
The mystery has become so tiresome, I would be happy enough if I was just told what it was about by someone who knew without actually wanting to tune in and see show in a few years time than devote my time to a drama that seems aimless at this point….
I’m giving it three more episodes, if it’s not interesting by the fourth im gonna start skipping it….
Which is a shame, I used to love this show….
Maybe i’m off the island?
Found?

I just want to add….I really liked Ian Henry Cusack ’s performance last week, but for me the addition of the old lady (plucked from the matrix!) who told him nothing in particular about life the universe and everything just seemed like such a crude device to amp up the intrigue! What next….
And then Jack woke up and it was all a dream!
This is sad for me because the actors are great, there are great characters, the cinematography and direction is excellent, great music, great overall idea, its just the writers letting it down at this point…
they are Lost!
Life imitating art and all that….

Alright, El Prez has my vote for favorite blogger. Dude, you’re hilarious. I think we finally have some answers to the Slolne mystery that the writers weren’t letting us in on. “If I’m a good boy, and watch the show nicely and keep my snark to myself, I usually get laid afterwards.” Wow, mystery solved. What I’m wondering is why they had us sit through all that drab about him wondering why their walks to the beach were too long or short and such. I guess I just suspended my disbelief that he was actually a frustrated fan. It was a good twist in the end that it was all a charade to get some. My only complaint is that the writers could have given us some better dialogue along the way.
Comment by cap10tripps — February 20, 2007 @ 3:56 pm
My opinion on this season is that the firs 6 episodes seemed like a collection of pointless fodder with some good points to gain (like Ben and Juliet). However, the last 2 episodes have really brought us closer to the overall answers to some of the big questions. Desmond’s time looping will undoubtedly go a long way to wrapping up some loose ends. Juliet’s fertility skills will seemingly also come into play in a big way. I understand the frustration of an average TV buff. They don’t want questions. They want answers. Instant gratification is the norm when it comes to want your average viewer wants. It’s why reality shows have taken off so high. People don’t have the patience to ponder the possibilities until next week. A lot of these people are still fans. They’re just waiting until the DVD’s come out. I for one, am someone who has had a lot of discussions regarding the things this show brings into play (time travel, faith, science, alternate planes, magnetic anomallies) long before the show was even thought of. It is these discussions of the possibilities that interest me far more than wondering if Hurley, Charly, Claire, Locke, Sun, and Jin are spending the time we don’t see them talking about the difficulty of torches and what the hell’s going on while hittin the ol’ peace pipe (hey, blow that s@#t away from Sun, she’s pregnant). For those of us who ponder the mysteries of the universe (or multiverse) this show is as good as it gets. Most people are more concerned with what’s right in front of them. While the show tries to find a balance at times, it seems they’re shifting more to the side of those of us who are more concerned with the things that surround us and the things that surround them and so on. This will probably turn some people off. I believe their are plenty of “American Idols” to satisfy the masses. There are still plenty of us to go around for “Lost” to not only succeed but to go down as a classic. OUR RESOLVE IS STRONG BROTHERS AND SISTAS!
Comment by cap10tripps — February 20, 2007 @ 4:48 pm
I’ll say it again, the characters are idiots and they could ALL die off, it is the mystery that I watch for. Untill the writers give them some intelligence. Maybe I will care again for the characters— In fact lets look at them
Charlie - drug addicted, fired-from-the-band rock star
Claire - no job, pregnant from a loser and gets her inpsiration from a Fortune tellar (or who she thinks is one)
Kate - murderer, abducted criminal in route to prison time
Sawyer - a con man, criminal as well
Locke - former drug grower, house inspector, box sellsman, adventurer wanna-be
Ecko- - murderer and drug lord wanna-be priest
Jack - troubled surgeon, accidental deaths define him
Ana-Lucia - fired cop, murderer
Libby - Phycho woman, paranoid, mental patient
Hurley- chicken fryer gone lottery winner gone mental patient
Sun - Korean Mobster, murderer, criminal
Jin - Korean socialite turned slut/cheater to another socialite
Sayid - iraqi war terror specialist
WOW, a fine sampling of the human race we have on this plane/island. In fact, the only normal ones we would want living next door to us are the very ones we NEVER see, Bernard and his wife.
Gee I wonder what the writers will come up with those two new people that we have barely seen…rapist, terrorist, child molester, transexual crack addicted hooker…..
Kinda makes you wonder this HAS to be purgatory. NO ONE HERE IS NORMAL!!!
Comment by thirdflr — February 21, 2007 @ 6:13 am
I think I stumbled across another theory. They are ALL in purgatory waiting to be assigned back as someone or something else in their (the writers) hollywood/Hindu/Buddah influenced reincarnation. Buddah is trying to determine if they are worthy to come back as humans or as polar bears, blackie smoke monsters or sharks…
Comment by thirdflr — February 21, 2007 @ 6:22 am
To your point thirdflr. The thing is they’re supposed to be losers. Redemption is a central theme here. The writers have refuted the purgatory/they’re all dead conclusion. Probably because that seemed the most obvious and was defintitely the most popular theory. Cloning seems logical now. As in they have died and were then cloned as part of another creepy DHARMA experiment. A point here on DHARMA, check out Rupert Sheldrake on wickipedia. It gets into a theory called morphic resonance. This basically tries to explain evolution in and alternate way. That is our DNA/energy is all interconnected, and that the more repetitive something happens around you the more it becomes imbedded within you, factoring not only in your life but the lives of future generations. Another scientist (whose name escapes me) with similar inclinations does an experiment with rats in a maze. The rats success rate in completing the maze signifigantly grows with each generation of maze traveling rat. The reason I bring this up is because there are correlations between the psychic experimentation of animals to the others and DHARMA. It also gets into causation which was philosopher David Hume’s baby. This also ties into the fabled Venazetti code. Could the others be using/trying to use morphic resonance to change the code and save the human race? Maybe, maybe not but some interesting points of discussion here…
Comment by cap10tripps — February 21, 2007 @ 10:51 am
Just a follow up on the cloning possibility. If this is true, then it would be safe to assume that Des is the only one in the group who is not cloned unless he really was on the plane. Clones would explain things like Locke’s ability to walk and Rose’s new health. Desmond’s looping ability could lead them to the truth (whatever that may be).
Comment by cap10tripps — February 21, 2007 @ 12:14 pm
Wow, doesn’t anyone remember why we liked this show in the first place. If they spelled out everything on the very first show in the first season the show would have tanked. With the success of the first season they had to figure out how to keep our attention for the long haul over many (hopefully) seasons to come. Why would they spell out what they are planning over the next few seasons now… The reason we all thought the show kicked serious azz was the fact that they laid out hints and then let us try to figure them out with clues. The second best part of Lost is checking out all of the sites like this one to see if anyone figured anything out or found a new Easter egg. Now all that is on these site is people talking smack and telling stories on how they get laid. For shame, for shame.
If you don’t like watching an interesting show that makes you think please watch American Idiot and stop posting your dribble on fan sites.

Well I had big fun last night. But it didn’t go too well for all the Lost fanatics. Even the most optimistic of y’all couldn’t put lipstick on that pig.
The stupidity continues. The Others are a closed community, with limited assets. One of the most valuable of which is a skilled doctor. So what do the Others do with Ethan? Keep him busy, risking his hands, doing plumbing. Then they send him off on a dangerous mission that anyone else probably could have handled. And what happens? Gasp, he gets killed by the Hobbit. What a bunch of dumb asses, they get no pity from me.
So Jack goes to Thailand to get a Chinese tattoo. LOL, yeah, right. And the guy down the street from me does his tattoos in Swahili. Way to pay attention to detail. And what’s up with Jack, are they trying to make his character even MORE unlikable? That mysoginistic bastard roughing up the skanky Bai Ling was reprehensible. Jackass got off FAR too easy. If he’d have done that to MY sister the beating would still be going on. And this POS is suppose to be the lead of this show?
And of course Dr Phil, er, I mean Sawyer lets Carl go without getting any answers. Because we can’t have a source of information hanging around. If he starts talking this paper thin plot will be over. At least that’s what is constantly parroted. “If you get all the answers the story will be over.”
Oh, and what happened to the ratings? Last week was the Best.Episode.Evah. So people should have been coming back in droves. And of course everyone was claiming that last weeks numbers were so low because of Valentine’s day. But last night’s numbers were the same as the week before, the lowest ratings evah. Remember?
So what happened?
I love the smell of schadenfreude in the morning, it smells like, victory.

“If you don’t like watching an interesting show that makes you think please watch American Idiot and stop posting your dribble on fan sites.”
Oh Lost serves my purposes quite well. Because of it, I look forward to Wednesday nights. And actually I’m coming to like it more and more, in a MST3K way.
Oh, and the word you want is DRIVEL. DRIBBLE is what drips out of your mouth while you’re fanwanking over Lost. You better watch that, cause you gotta be intelligent to watch Lost. If you keep misusing words they’re gonna take away your secret Lost decoder ring. And force you to watch Criminal Minds or something, and you’ll probably find out you like it a lot more than Lost.
Well, hugs and kisses folks, talk to you later.

Slone, apparently you haven’t got the point. Your credibility is shot. While I must admit to being a fan of MST3K, the things you crack on this show about will fall on deaf ears. The recent mystery you’ve revealed (falsifying your disinterest in this show for sex and not really being a frustrated fan) has made it clear that you’re that kid that nobody likes and everybody ignores, so you just try to be a little more annoying to harness some kind of attention. Here’s to hoping the next girl that’s willing to throw you one watches “Dancing with the Stars.” Bro, do us all a favor and leave this to the fans.
