Lost Moment #5
This LOST Moment is superb. I’m impressed that ABC went out on a limb to give us a revelation like this. I was jumping out of my freaking seta from the moment this baby started!

Yes, I have to admit, this Lost moment has left me in slight shock and awe mode.
I have a few observations/thoughts to bring up, but, I haven’t had enough coffee yet to comment seriously on this GEM of a Lost moment.
But, I will say this:
When Cindy is approaching Jack with the crew behind her, it reminds me of Shaun of the Dead or every other vampire movie. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not and won’t go into vampire theory mode EVER — but, the cult watching on while Cindy approaches Jack is just so creepy. Almost as creepy as Cindy’s, “Heyy, Jack,” line.
And, I kind of appreciate the poor editing of the Cindy/Jack dialogue parts. Obviously, much more is revealed to him as you can kind of see him go from thinking Cindy was also captured/a victim of the Others to (after the obvious cut out dialogue) being angry/maybe discovering she has been in on it when he breaks out mad Jack yelling, “WELL GO WATCH.”
WOW.

That was absolutely amazing. I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO START UP AGAIN. Cindy is hot. Now if we can just get rid of Paulo and Nikki

This clip makes me sad. It’s SO MUCH BETTER than anything we saw in the first 6 episodes of Season 3. This show is so uneven, it really bothers me. Anybody got some screencaps from this clip so we can see who the people are in the background behind Cindy?
Comment by spectre99 — December 14, 2006 @ 7:22 am
Dammit! I can’t see this from work, can someone right upa quick synopsis for a homie? I wanna know what all the fuss is about!
Comment by Aeolian42 — December 14, 2006 @ 7:32 am
Wow indeed! Isn’t Hurley one of the people watching in the background? (Pink-looking shirt.)
Comment by Me — December 14, 2006 @ 7:51 am
Spectre99: I completely understand the division of opinions on the quality of the first six expisodes. I’ve yet to find a Lost fan who’s list of favorite episodes are the same as mine. With so many viewers who watch or enjoy for so many different reasons, it’s logical that fans will always be divided on what rocks vs. what sucks.
That being said, it’s somewhat difficult for me to grasp the idea of a tiny, mini-commercial preview and conclude that it was better than the entire saga presented thus far in Season 3???
Although, there does seem to be a highly concentrated amount of Lost viewers who expect bombshells, twists, and shockers galore in every single episode.
This, of course, is an impossible expectation for an ongoing saga. In fact, if you’re really into analyzing the themes/plots/future of Lost, you actually get more clues/relevant foreshadowing and/or background from some of the slower episodes or parts of episodes. People just fail to recognize that sometimes. (Don’t get me wrong… I have and do bitch about certain episodes that just seem like filler to me. But, as a writer, I know that you have to add that too.)
That being said, the Lost Moment still rocked.
Comment by Ella — December 14, 2006 @ 8:16 am
i really want to grab a time machine and buy the complete 3rd and 4th seasons on DVD, and then comeback and try 2 keep my mouth shut_
Comment by Desmond Brother — December 14, 2006 @ 8:32 am
yeah but in 3 of the 6 episodes this season, we got zero character development, zero action, and no net change in the plot at the end of an hour.
Comment by spectre99 — December 14, 2006 @ 8:34 am
For those of you who can’t view the video, the synopsis is as follows:
Cindy (flight attendant from the plane) appears topless, with hands covering her breasts, talking to Jack who is inside a cage. There are a bunch of other unknown people standing around in the background.
Cindy says she is just about to leave and have sex with Sawyer, which makes Jack angry. Then Cindy goes off to her meeting with Sawyer. Jack, in his anger, yells at the other people standing there “WELL, GO WATCH!!”
Comment by jonboy27 — December 14, 2006 @ 8:36 am
Y’know, the first six was an experiment for the writers and the producers and we should cut them some slack. I think the idea of a mini-season was awesome, they didn’t pull it off; nuff said. The rest of the season will be more business as usual. This is the stuff we will hold up against season one and two, not the silly mini-season business (although there still were a couple of GEMS in there.)
Comment by docarzt — December 14, 2006 @ 8:46 am
The feeling I got from the first 6 eps of S3 was all about them trying to save money. Have fewer actors appear, use a limited number of sets, complete the filming faster than usual by involving as little as possible. Now–granted–maybe they have to do this sometimes to have more money available to spend on other things later in the season. But I just thought it was cheap. We learned so little actual real character information about Ben, Juliet, and others. It’s all so slow and boring. It’s insulting.
Comment by spectre99 — December 14, 2006 @ 8:54 am
jonboy27 (you get that handle from freaking Garfield man? if so - fantastic) - that was hilarious. Well done. The only unanswered question, is Jack jealous because he’s into Kate and/or Cindy, or because he’s into Sawyer? Stay tuned… LOST.
Seriously though, I’m encouraged by this Moment. What really happens, Aeolian42, is Cindy approaches Jack in one of the bear cages with the Others mulling around behind her. She says hello. She reveals that “it’s complicated” why she’s with the Others, she says they’re all there “to watch,” he freaks a little bit, and after the afore-mentioned jump cut, he goes into full-bore Jack rage.
I must say, as much as I loved the opening of mini-pod season 3 (and not too much else), the one thing that has bothered me and made me think less of the entire series thus far (and this was intimated back at the end of Season 2), was that the plane crashing was an accident. An ACCIDENT. So all of the interconnections of the peoples’ lives, all of the Others’ plans, might not have been had Desmond not crashed the plane. The clip suggests Cindy (who appeared fresh and unharmed) has… or, better yet, HAD… something to do with it all. I would like to believe it wasn’t just an accident.
By the way - I thought I saw Hurley, too, at first - but I don’t think that guy was large enough. They don’t look like the usual cast of Others though. With so much emphasis on WATCHING and monitoring with the computers, I’m starting to think this whole thing could be a Matrix-like simulation (on prisoners or something) and everyone is being studied in a giant psychological experiment to see how they react. I hope that’s not it though.
Comment by Land of the Lostie — December 14, 2006 @ 9:05 am
Well, Spectre, it’s too easy for us to see it that way though. We need to put ourselves in their shoes. The biggest challenge they have had to chew off over the last two seasons were the two-part finales. I think they just fumbled the task, but at the same time it was a very difficult task. What I attribute the failure to was the miscalculation of how much tension the captivity was going to bring. It would have been much nicer to see them go through a regiment of prisoner-esque psychological challenges (as in the McGoohan series) and then arrive at some mind-blowing 180-degree turn. The fact of the matter is, this idea probably looked great on paper.

Doc..it doesn’t sound like we disagree. I have no problem with the concept of the 6-story mini arc and in-season cliffhanger. I just think that not a lot happened in these 6 eps. I’d say the most significant thing we learned in those 6 eps is that Smokey can take human form. second most significant was that locke previously met Tom Friendly but doesn’t know it (he was at the pot-growing camp)
Comment by spectre99 — December 14, 2006 @ 10:23 am
Maybe cindy wasnt even taken by the others.she might have turned round and walked straight into them or waited in a bush lmao for them to appear ”its not as simple as that” as nearly all the tailes and claire/charlie were like draggged away by force..why would she also be all happy and fresh looking if she wasnt in on something..i also think the mini season was fantastic i bet all of you who hated it..will watch the dvd set all at once episode after episode and it will feel like a regualar season and any doubts/anger about the first 6 will vanish..and good luck to evangeline in the golden globes!! and LOST!! lol.
Comment by Daniel — December 14, 2006 @ 10:23 am
i know its like just under a year away but has anyone also thought about the dvd artwork or special features ?? i just cant wait to see the artwork for the season 3 dvd set..maybe red this time..like season 1 silver/turquoise..season 2 orange..and season 3 red..maybe dark green..maybe yellow..lol and it will be wicked to watch episode 6-7 with no break when we can lmao..
Comment by Daniel — December 14, 2006 @ 10:26 am
second most significant was that locke previously met Tom Friendly but doesn’t know it (he was at the pot-growing camp)
No, it’s not the same guy. Tom = M.C. Gainey, Pot Growing Dude = Chris Mulkey. Different actors.
That’s your significant stuff? What the heck? Um, the plane breaking apart in front of us at 5,000 feet or so, not 30,000? The Others *aren’t* animals but live in a nice suburb? Finding out about how Ethan and Goodwin knew about the crash? Fake Henry’s real name? What happened to Sayid, Jun & Sun? What happened to John, Desmond and Eko, post Swan implosion? That the Hydra is on a second island? The existence of Patchy and (probably) the Flame station? THAT THERE’S AN OUTSIDE WORLD?
I mean, really, there was lots of good bits of info in those six eppies.
Comment by Jeremy Bender — December 14, 2006 @ 10:45 am
Oh I do agree with you spectre99, but I think their heart was in the right place and just wanted to point that out. It is a unique challenge they had, and they gave it their best shot. I don’t think there was anything disingenuous about it at all.

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!
I completely disagree with anyone saying the “mini-season” sucked. I can understand where you are coming from but i still think those episodes were a lot better than other episodes form the first 2 seasons. The only thing that sucked was the damn cliffhanger….13 weeks!!!! damn you!!!!!! but its all good now cause of these lost moments.
I thought this lost moment was great. I also think there was a lot of editing to this clip and that there is much more dialogue. Also, unlike most people, i think the reason cindy is all weird is cause she is now one of the others and she knows and understands everything she is doing and is having a wonderful time on the island. i don’t think she was in on it from the beginning….but who knows?? damon does thats who.
Another thing is that like ^ said i think the dvd artwork is going to be black and darkgreen but wit the same character layout. it has to be those colors mainly because this seasons poster used those colors….its going to look sick.

Someone mentioned we learned about the outside world, so I feel the need to send out a shout-out to the 2004 season of the Boston Red Sox. That was really a full-circle moment for me to see that tape again in the only TV show not titled “Family Guy” that I actually watch. If nothing else, Smokey and (vintage) Keith Foulke really made the captivity worth while… oh, and E.Lilly quasi-naked, too.
Comment by Land of the Lostie — December 14, 2006 @ 11:52 am
i thought the mini season was good too, setting up for some good stuff to come i bet….the question i have about the clip is this: was this clip taking place before or after the ben issue was resolved?? maybe the others are keeping jack in a cage until they figure out what to do.
Comment by Alex — December 14, 2006 @ 12:01 pm
the 2004 season of the Boston Red Sox
I thought that was a clever use of a pretty obscure bit from the first season to make Jack “change his perspective” (though Ben likely didn’t know the significance to Jack, he was just doing the top US news stories since the crash). As an Angels fan who still has bad memories about 1986, I wish the Red Sox and all their fans would die in a horrible catalysm of death and misery
but still, yes, that was a cool bit.
The only problem I had with the mini-season was how lame I thought Jack and John’s flashback’s were. Got it, Jack’s got daddy issues, got it, John is searching for a surrogate family, we KNOW. The episodes were a little monochromatic because of the focus on Jack, Kate and James and the fact that they took place in cages and on the second island, but it’s only 1/4 of the season, plenty more to go.
Comment by Jeremy Bender — December 14, 2006 @ 12:05 pm
Apologies for getting back into the mini-season discussion when this is a post about the Lost Moment.
To make up for it, I’d like to mention to the poster that said it appeared to be Hurley in the cult group wearing a pink shirt: While I haven’t seen high def screen caps, I have watched this Lost Moment more than I’ll ever admit, and I’m 99.8% certain that is not Hurley. But, I’m wrong more than I’m right about Lost.
Back to “Did the mini-season suck/fail?”
I have no problem with differing opinions on what’s good versus what’s bad (pun intended) on Lost. My main point to Spectre99 was, you can’t really take a tiny preview edited for shock value and compare it to all of the work that went into Season 6 thus far, whether you liked it or not. Hey, they could make a little one minute montage clip of the crash scene, a polar bear scene, and maybe a black smoke monster attack, and technically, I could say, “That was the best thing I’ve ever seen on Lost.”
That being said, I really liked the mini-season (NOT every episode, mind you) and I’m not ready to write off the current season set up as a failure. I would say that they need to abandon the idea of TWO huge finales — but I think Episode 6 was hyped as such because of Nielson issues. Seeing how every season is essentially another story/perspective, the idea of a six episode “set up” for that actually seems ideal. However, many fans want constant action and fail to recognize the importance of the set-up.
Again, Spectre99, I hope you’re not a person that takes differing opinions on Lost episodes personally. I actually enjoy the back and forth, and sooooo….
Minimal Character Development?
A. It took a complete season (1), to really grasp the Losties. I would never expect in six hours (less counting commercials) that ANY writing staff could accomplish SIGNIFICANT char. development — particularly with the size of the cast and other needs for the “set up.” (I will agree with you, however, that certain characters, like Sawyer for example, are develelped probably as far as they can be. So, I was NOT fond of the Sawyer-centric episode. Although, there were some changes to note in Sawyer — but, not really important as I don’t think Sawyer will be significant in the final answers.
B. Ben and Juliet? I beg to differ. I could easily talk about or write very long essays on what I learned in the six hours. The problem is, we, as viewers, can’t really trust what was thrown out so far because we just don’t know enough about their motives. Again, this goes into the set-up. But, heck, we DID learn a lot about both of them.
C. Eko’s character was developed and completed. (minus some speculated/spoken of future scenes which I suspect will be less about Eko himself and more about the island.)
D. Desmond?? Again, brother… his character was develped substantially from what we learned about him in his previous brief parts on the show. Of course, he’s mysterious… making most fans wanting MORE. To me, writers that accomplish that, are stellar.
E. Jack - In 6 episodes I went from considering Jack a fairly dull character with a holier than thou hero complex to finding him one of the most intriging characters on the show. His character developed more than any — although, I realize how angry some fans are that so much time was taken to develop him when other characters need the screen time. Well, he’s the main character. Expect that.
F. Alex. Again, this was minimal… but a promising start to her character.
Zero action? I’m not sure if you mean huge bombshells/shockers, or what with the phrase action. But, again, looking at this as a set-up, I believe we’re in for quite a bit of action. However, I think there was a multitude of action. (I’m running out of room, so I’ll refer up to Jeremy Bender who mentioned some of the bigger moments of the season.
Zero Net Change:
A. I don’t want to watch a show that’s going to lack development or change completely within six hours. I’m not an impatient fan. I rather enjoy the detective part of the show.
B. Again, it was set up for net change… but, heck again, there were some huge changes.
C. However, there was, in my opinion, much change (outside of a new perspective/new story of Lost):
Eko died, Locke “came back” as a leader, glimpses of fights of control between Juliet/Ben showing an important weakness within this group, and most importantly (other than the cage sex — kidding, I could do without ANY romance on Lost) we started with 3 of the Losties trapped — moved to the thought that they might never get back with the realization of the two islands and ended with a possible escape and return to the big island. That’s a pretty significant net change in 6 hours. Imprisoned to on their way to freedom…
I’ll quit rambling and defending the mini-season. Obviously, I’m one of the weird Lost fans that was fond of it.
Comment by Ella — December 14, 2006 @ 12:35 pm
Yes a very good point is Jack’s redemption as a character. They really addressed the sort of “cookie cutter” Jack moments from season two and gave him some room to vary his delivery. This of course, is speculating about politics behind the scenes and may be complete bunk but: usually, any show will try to find an actors key points of charisma and work them in. In season two, they just made Jack bitchy to the point of Kvetching, a cry-baby, and too over-emotional in general to be a good palette for emotional change. So far, they have held over some of his signature ‘ticks’ (like his tendency to blow his top), but they’ve also shown us a reflective side which helps distinguish where the considerations of the past are sounding out in his present character. All proof that they listen. But hey Ella… I have video proof you weren’t too pleased with the mini-finale
Comment by docarzt — December 14, 2006 @ 12:45 pm
i rele think jack is gonna go insane on Lost, it would be an awesome end to the usually calm doctor.
Comment by dallas — December 14, 2006 @ 1:43 pm
I don’t think anyone has posed this question, but isn’t it possible that this is some kind of dream sequence or even a hoax/joke by abc? The editting is terrible, the people in the background look fake, and this wouldn’t be the first time that they’ve done this. In one of the previous seasons (I think last season) they had commercials for an upcoming Lost episode where they claimed “everything changes” and then showed Jin speaking perfect English. My wife and I were mouth agape and couldn’t wait for the week to go by. We were utterly disappointed (and a bit hurt) when it turned out it was a dream sequence that had Jin speaking English. Why would you do that to us abc? And are you doing it again?
Comment by Richard — December 14, 2006 @ 2:20 pm
Richard: I absolutely DO NOT think it’s a hoax on ABC’s part. I don’t think it’s a dream sequence either. The poor editing is because they cut out relevant, more revealing dialogue, in my opinion.
But, I have considered this could be a hallucination (although, doubt it as the hallucinations occur on the big island). And, I also considered that this is a flashback… maybe Jack waking up after first being kidnapped, before the first scene with Juliete making sammiches for him.
Still, I suspect it’s an actual scene and I have my own speculations from other spoilers of what’s to come that would make it wholly reasonable that he wakes up, disoriented (somewhat) in a cage.
based on spoilers
.
.
.
.
.
.
I imagine Juliete is going to be pissed that Jack did what he did for Kate and Sawyer and NOT her. I also know she’s going to make it back to big island with Kate and Sawyer. So, I can see her:
A. Injecting Jack and locking him up out of disloyalty to her AND, since she has developed some empathy for him, setting up Cindy and the crew to come see him so he can finally understand why Ben is so bad.
B. Then, shooting whoever gets in her way and getting off the island with K/S.
Comment by Ella — December 14, 2006 @ 2:33 pm
The first six episodes were AMAZING!!!! I loved all of them, except for the Locke one, but in general they were great. This is Lost, things make sense slowly. The Kate-Jack-Sawyer-Others situation was spectacular!
This Lost Moment makes me wonder if Kate left Jack alone on the island. I hope she didnt, Jack is too cool.

Jack’s cheesing out again. I think it’s appropriate they’ve caged him like an animal, because that’s how he behaves most of the time. I’m suprised he’s not flinging poo at them by now. When is he going to realize that going all yuppie-90’s-angry-guy just makes him look stupid? I liked his little kidney ploy, but that’s about the smartest thing he’s done since… ever.

In regards to bad Locke and Jack flashbacks…
From the beginning the producers have said this is a character driven story. Yes we know these things about them, but I don’t think that the producers are ever saying “lets just kinda…take it easy this month…wrire a kinda…slow…boring…meaningless episode. I hate my job, man.”
It all happens for a reason my friend. Now stop dissin LOST OK!?

a lot of the so-called interesting things from the first six eps were not intersting to me. we already knew that the Others did not live in huts…i did not find it surprising or interesting that they live in houses. And the guy in Locke’s flashback clearly WAS Mr friendly even though played by a different actor. we’ve seen many doubles on lost played by diff actors, such as the people in the orientation videos. no doubt the guy in locke’s flashback is directly linked to Tom, just as Ben is linked to Aaron’s father.

Jesus, make up your mind. Tom and Mike can’t be the same person AND directly linked to each other, it’s one or the other. OR: you’re one of those people on the Fuselage that posts 2 minutes after an episode ends a thread called “Bea Klugh was at Juliet’s bookclub”.

I am happy to see some very important development being shown here — but one big corner of my heart is a little bit afraid, that they wont reveal every big secret through these lost moments before feb! Remeber there are approx 7 more moments to go! It wants the show to go on and on with mysteries being revealed, AND new mysteries creeping in.. so that there is never a dearth of unexplained mysteries in the show!
I hope this moment just didnt make it “too easy” for us to guess the bigger picture now — I hope they have more nifty secrets left up their sleeves!
