What worries me is that LOST is losing credibility. Heroes WILL surpass LOST in ratings this season. That is a fact that ABC needs to keep in mind, because ultimately that is going to mean the advertising money is going to drift to Monday when NBC declares ownership of the demos. I don’t mean this to be derogatory Karted, but blind loyalty will lead to lower expectations for the show. LOST fans must be discerning. We came to this show because it was smart, challenging, and knew how to get and keep our attentions. All ABC marketing has done here is illustrate their lack of understanding for their audience. Some will interpret this as meaning that the few episodes that come after the hiatus are devoid of ‘ticklers’. Heck, a lot of the folks I talk to in the media are already starting to look at the “This season is about action and adventure line” to mean “we’re out of ideas”. Releasing lame previews just helps those nay-sayers pound their case. The fair-weather friends in the media have turned into a flock of vultures here. ABC has got to start delivering with this.

So…writing about how you think LOST is losing credibility isn’t feeding the fire at all? You guys are a bunch of emotional dorks who try to improve the image of your own “credibility” by trying to find something to critique negatively thus building your self-esteem. If you are truly LOST fans, then stop calling them out to be this and that and celebrate what you enjoy about the show. The more you spread this BS the more people will take heed and LOST will lose viewers and seasons in the process. By the way…do you think ABC or the LOST creators like showing in total 6.5 minutes of footage before the episodes actually air? They probably don’t, but they’re doing it for us. So shut the F up about credibility and give us more spoilers.
Comment by Jeramie — November 29, 2006 @ 11:12 pm
So Jeramie you see take issue at TTS’s view but turn around and shout an obscenity and demand spoilers? What a little kid you truly are. Indeed like any kid who, faced with seeing an adult discussion on something the kid likes, makes the kid shout “No! Its the bestest! Bestest ever! Now give me some chocolate!” - see how ridiculous that sounds coming out of a kid’s mouth? Now imagine how ridiculous that sounds coming out of presumably a grown man’s mouth - oh, er keyboard. TTS is the premiere LOST site for not copy&pasted news/spoilers but in-depth analysis and discussion of all facets of the show and production. If you want a webmaster who “shuts the F up” and just posts spoilers, visit any of the 1000 websites out there that are lacking in personality. Besides, any site that gets you to spend 20 minutes commenting on a news topic is doing a very good job. Adios.
Comment by John K — November 30, 2006 @ 12:18 am
What I think Jeramie was trying to say was that the producers and execs at abc are walking on eggshells trying to please EVERY kind of lostie with these strange gimmicks, but no one’s cutting them any slack. It’s been proven that the creators listen to the fans, so what you’re seeing here is an attempt by them to give us what they think we want. Some people might want hokey 30 second teasers, no big deal. Definitely not big enough to warrant near-tears and a tirade on one of the most highly regarded Lost sites on the web (at least by me :P). It just seems to me that the diehard losties are never pleased with what they’re given, so much so that it amazes me that they’re still watching, and not off somewhere writing their own personal Lost fanfics or something. And that HAS to be disconcerting for the creators.
My advice, though no one asked for it, is to just relax. Instead of nitpicking one of the few actual good shows on the idiot box, focus your anger and scorn on Network Television as a whole for willingly choosing unoriginality and lacking the courage to stand by original programming that could potentially make a person think about things in a way they never had before.
P.S. it’s almost 2007, can we all start being civil to each other on the internets already?
Comment by Jimmy Zer0 — November 30, 2006 @ 3:53 am
Jimmmie, Jeramie, please, don’t let the hyperbole take you down that path. It’s obviously exaggerated for entertainment purposes. What I would say is that I would assume the creators are not disconcerted over our reaction as much as they are over what ABC marketing is throwing us. The problem is not the standards that the fans place on the show, it’s the lack of standards that they showed with these LOST moments. Embedding them at random times during Day Break was an effort to get LOST fans to sample Daybreak. The problem is, we get in the room where the free kiss was supposed to be and we get a kick in the nuts. Jeramie, I’m flattered you think this site would impact the credibility of LOST, in the end I know when it returns we’re all going to be rocking and rolling over the awesomeness; in the meantime 30 seconds of Charlie and Hurley rooting through Sawyer’s stash to canned dramatic fodder is just terrible.
Comment by docarzt — November 30, 2006 @ 4:51 am
All of those previous comments aside, I want to comment on the “moments”. I agree that most of it is useless filler, but I think they are trying to set something up. Both that I have seen involve Charlie and Desmond and more importantly Desmond’s plans. Yeah we already know that Desmond can see the future or has been in the future, but maybe all of these moments will add up to a bigger moment. Something where the collection of the peices is much bigger than it individual clips.
I for one will be waiting to see them all together - and I will be looking for them right on this site (I have no desire to see Day Break, so I will let the people who do collect the clips and post them (Thanks!))
Comment by Pecma — November 30, 2006 @ 5:58 am
Honestly, I have no idea what these 30 second clips are even about, though I hope they all contribute to something awesome. Doc, I wasn’t flaming you or your opinions on them. I just get concerned sometimes that all the clamoring from fans is causing the abc execs to put undue pressure on the creators to come through on all fronts, when what they need to be doing right now is working on making season 3 as epic as possible.
Comment by Jimmy Zer0 — November 30, 2006 @ 7:03 am
I think we need to look at LOST as an evolution of TV programming that’s been influenced by the latest and greatest technology. It’s a show that has a lot of mythology and back story and hidden agendas. That alone is enough to watch the show. But then we all hit the internet to find out more behind the scenes information and spoilers, basically contributing to the snowball effect that the show is trying to keep up with. If no one searched for answers, no one would be out providing them. In this immediate gratification age that we live in, people have forgotten their good sense and above all else: PATIENCE.
This show isn’t the A Team or CSI or Magnum PI. It’s not wrapped up at the end with a pretty little bow, dumbed down for the masses. It is a puzzle. One that I love searching out the answers to and providing my own theories to anyone who’ll listen, much like the guys at the gym who like to predict how the football season is going to turn out. While you do see them on ESPN chatrooms, you don’t see them demanding the SuperBowl immediately after the start of the season.
As far as the LOST moments go, I hold ABC and their marketing team completely responsible in the same way that I hold NBC’s marketing team responsible for Save the Cheerleader, Save the World….They hyped that damn thing to near extinction. But it will all pan out in the end..everyone just needs to see through the marketing and get back to what the show is all about.
If LOST is ever seen as a failure, it will lie solely on the network, not the creators.

Hey Jimmy Zer0, I didn’t mean to lump you in with the flamer. Your comment is an apt counter-point. However, let me just say that I act her under the assumption that my opinion and this site carry absolutely zero influence in the ABC board-room, and I’m sure that is true. So I don’t worry about influencing politics. Last I checked, having a blog (however popular it is) doesn’t make you a power-broker. Now, that said, if the LOST guys are reading my site I wish they’d acknowledge that fact. All that aside, the criticism is not directed at all towards Damon, Carlton, et al. Like Smokey, I hold marketing responsible. To be fair to them, maybe they had these clips dropped on their laps and said “make the best of it…”
Here’s an idea that would have been absolutely fantastic, if not a little tiny bit derivitive of a certain competitor. WHAT IF: Hurley had a little self contained adventure on his way back from the pier to the camp. WHAT IF instead of giving us 30 seconds of tripe every week, they either shot that adventure as a mini-piece, OR (assuming budget/time is an issue) they released it as a graphic novel in installments. Maybe they have something planned for that stretch of time. Maybe they don’t. Two pages a week for the hiatus. Most good comic artists pen and ink a page a day. A writer could have put the story together in a week or two. It would have held MUCH more satisfaction for story deprived fans then these little pieces.
What frosts me about this is that this is both an attempt to keep people interested, and an attempt to draw a targeted fanbase into a particular show. Genius in one regard. The problem is, it doesn’t deliver on the most important side of the plan. Day Break is a great show. I love it. I’m watching. As a LOST fan, I do want to be compelled to watch after the hiatus, but it isn’t necessary to sell it to me. I’ll be there regardless. This whole LOST moments thing is an attempt to keep fans from changing their Wednesday night habits and that is all it is. It is not designed to appease us or offer us tidbits which will enhance our viewing in February. It’s only purpose is to keep us in the habit of tuning into ABC at 9:00 every Wednesday. Now, the genius who came up with that equation should have thought about factors of aversion as well. What if they continue to dissapoint. Isn’t that training the viewer to come to that time slot with lowered expectations? I know your all smarter than that, but I’m sure you know what I mean too. If their going to play mind games and try to influence viewer behavior, they should be examining the possible downside as well. What if all this does is continue to feed the “LOST doesn’t deliver” mantra that the show’s competitors want out there and full out viral?

It was exaggerated for entertainment purposes…and because I was angry at the time. Nonetheless, I apologize for the way I said what I said. But seriously, you all should stop complaining about what LOST hasn’t given us and enjoy the damn show.
Comment by Jeramie — November 30, 2006 @ 1:11 pm
Jeramie… again, it’s not a statement against the show. It is a statement against ABC’s marketing…
Comment by docarzt — November 30, 2006 @ 1:32 pm
Disregarding the LOSt moments for a second, I meant to add earlier that Day Break is actually a good show and last night was the coolest part because he actually fixed something, thereby changing his day…Pretty cool stuff
Comment by smokey2006 — November 30, 2006 @ 1:51 pm
Hey Doc, I see what you’re saying and I agree that what’s being presented is not very compelling at all. The only thing that I disagree about is the intent. I think that the intent for these clips is that they will do exactly what they do… start conversations on message boards. One 30 second clip spawns Pages of dialogue about Charlie’s “intentions” or whatnot. All it does is keep people talking about “Lost”.
Yes, they could certainly choose different and better clips, but lets be honest… with those media people that you’re talking about, isn’t it almost a certainty that they’re going to complain no matter What Lost does right now? I mean, the graphic novel thing that you mentioned would be cool, but then they’d catch heck because “Heroes” is already doing that with 7 page comics (well, 5 really) While the show is still on air. What could they do, really? I mean, last break they did a massive ARG and look at how much grief they caught over That.
I think that they had planned for a Hurley mobisode adventure, but that fell through for some reason, so they scrambled and shoved together whatever they could. They’re not intriguing at all, but I’m just indifferent to them, because I didn’t have any type of expectations for them. Maybe going with showing “nothing” would be better, but I bet that the network is afraid of doing that. And rightfully so… 3 months is a long time.
Comment by riverthebald — November 30, 2006 @ 9:42 pm
Yeah I agree they had to do something. It’s just they have such access, it is difficult to imagine why they couldn’t have done something better. I would have forgiven them for treading into Heroes turf with a Graphic Novel, mostly because its not Heroes turf to begin with

if you think lost moments are an insult, so don’t watch them and wait for the return of the show!!
(it’s simple and it’s works)
Comment by J.J — December 1, 2006 @ 10:12 am
J.J, your right… of course.
Comment by docarzt — December 1, 2006 @ 12:56 pm
The hilarious thing about this crap is that there’s probably no way to not set expectations to high for these “LOST moments.” Even people watching “Day Break” for the hell of it will perk up when they hear that ABC’s about to play a clip from LOST, and then it ends up being Charlie and Hurley rummaging through magazines and Desmond saying “c’mere.” I guarantee that clip is exciting to NOBODY. So I say only show clips if they tease, and if you don’t have enough to do that, then don’t show them.
