Stephen King Explains How he Would End LOST!
The upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly has a BOMBASTICALLY cool article which is basically a conversation moderated by Jeff Jensen between Stephen King, JJ Abrams, Carlton Cuse, and Damon Lindelof! The conversation took place right here in Maine (I’m a Mainer, ayuh) in King’s home town of Bangor - just 40 minutes up the road from yours truly. For Jeff’s memoir of the event click here.
During the conversation, the inevitable happened. Much to the delight of dual LOST/KING fans everywhere they asked King the big one: How would you end LOST. His answer lays beneath the jump!
Here, in his own words, is how Stephen King would end LOST:
I would take the main guy, Jack – the first shot of the whole series is his eye-ball close up, right? What that always said to me was that from now on, everything I see, Jack’s the eye of the beholder. So I would do something at the end where I flashback to the airport when they were getting on the plane, and I would have him taken away by people who wanted information out of him.
I would have them hook him up to a machine or something, or feed him drugs, and reveal the whole series had been Jack’s hallucination, built out of fragments of his real life – people from his past, people in the airport, his father, of course, and the numbers. The whole thing would be a lot of shuck and jive. I’d make it work somehow. It would creak, but I’d make it work.
Not bad! A LOT like many episodes of the Prisoner, but since the show is influenced by the Prisoner and King, it’s not so surprising he would go to the same well. What do you think?

It would take A LOT of work to make that ending work. It could be extremely cool, or it could end up feeling like a total cop out ending… like on Dallas when Bobby (or whoever) walks out of the shower and basically an entire season was chalked up to “it was just a dream.”
Considering the producers have already promised that this whole thing isn’t a hallucination, I think a lot of LOST fans would be very upset with that ending.

I’m not too impressed. While the idea would work great in a book, fans have speculated in that the show is occurring in the mind of one of the characters since season one. The overall fan reaction to the idea has been very negative.
Besides, in the episode “Dave”, the lost writers tried to make us believe that everything was imagined by Hurley, but in the end made it pretty clear that that was not the case.

I think that’s a total cop-out and way too easy. It’s much harder to pull it off by making everything that happened there real.

As for the King’s ending… sounds like an ending that MANY speculated or theorized.. however, if I’m not mistaken, did we not get confirmation from TPTB that they would NOT end the show like St. Elsewhere’s Fire??? This sounds similar to that as well.. as it being all in someone’s head… (I want yo say the quote was from someone asking if the show was all in Hurley’s head, and they said they woudln’t end the show with it being a dream or all in someone’s head)…

I see the opening shot or ending shot of the last episode of the whole series being a huge expensive CG zoom out starting with otherville and zooming out and up so we can see the entire island and all the improbable artifacts of the past that reside there.

*sigh* much as I ADORE Stephen King, I think that the ending he envisions is too much of a cop out/easy. I don’t think that it would be fair to us devoted fans (who have invested so much time, discussion, and sheer intrest in Lost) if the Island was just a hallucination and meant NOTHING to anyone but Jack.
But considering how King ended his most popular series… well, that wasn’t fair to us either, was it? Roland didn’t think so.

after reading this i thought, what if that is the ending? and the creators wanted to kinda tell everyone, so they had king tell the ending but say that its how he would end it. reason why-the whole dave(who we know noe might been smokey) to hurley about imagining everythin and then libby telling claire that she might have been mixin past memories and makin some stuff up when trying to remember those 2 weeks. As well as the whole eye thing at the begining of every season, and lets not forget the whole thing about us missing something in the pilot episode. maybe something with jack. and the whole others thing is just “them” or “him” trying to get something out of jacks mind, with mindgames. also the whole locke dream of the airport with boone, how hurley worked there and jack was next to sawyer n kate and ben walking thru the airport. what if that was jacks real world and all the last people he saw in the airport hurley sawyer ben kate were made up in his head after seeing them there? would kinda make sense.(sowi for english or mispelin english not my 1st alanguage)

The ending will suck no matter what, the writers have written themselves into a corner. Ever since the “others” were shown to be regular joe’s the show has stunk, no mystery, no fantasy, just a rag-tag group of average-joe scientists. No matter what ending comes up, it will never tie everything together, King knows that and even knew his ending would be “creaky” at best. There simply put is no good ending for the mess that is season 3.

What does irony have to do with this situation?
I think the issue I had was that the literal use of sick would not make any sense, however the literal use of bombastic could be applied, however it would have been in conflict with the rest of your post.
As far as being pedantic goes, I was unfamilair with the term and I looked it up.
I find it interesting that you put forth, in some fashion, “sick” as an alternative. The literal sick is pretty well understood and the slang meaning of “cool, impressive, good in some fashion” seems a pretty direct opposite.
In the case of bombastic, the actual term means pompous, overblown or boastful. Compare this to your use, which I’m going to assume is similar to urbandictionary’s and that it was a term similir to “awesome”. One man’s awesome is easily another man’s pompous or overblown. I’m gonna say poor misappropriation of a word.
Nice heads up on the article though, I found the snippets of the interview interesting.

I dont know about that, but I don’t think that even the creators and writers know whats going on in lost.. if you ever watch the special features on the dvd, in the interviews you get a wind that they wing it for each episode and that there is no grand master plan for the whole show.

That ending is garbage. Stephen King, of all people, should know that the “it was all a dream” plot (or variations thereof) is perhaps the dumbest and worst literary mistake a writer can make.

Irony has everything to do with using a word out of context purposefully with the intent of getting the opposite effect. Just figured since you were being so nit-picky you might appreciate a line that helped you fit in a little better around here, instead of coming across as a, well, nit picker…

I think it’d be a fine ending, lost is getting beyond redemption anyway, and to make anymore seasons would indeed be much more of a ‘cop-out’.

Hello, first time poster here (came via DarkUFO’s place).
That ending would be hideous. Why do they need something as *stupid* as that? They have a perfectly fine scenario already: Magnus Hanso found the Island on the Black Rock, he and the crew live there and build a society, Alvar Hanso and the DeGroots find out about the Valenzetti equation, start DHARMA to change the core values, build up the Island with the help of Widmore Industries and Paik Heavy Industries, they fail to change the values, DHARMA falls in to disrepair, The Others are original Islanders (Ben) and DHARMA people, Mittlewerk unleashes a virus in a last attempt to change the values of the equation, Desmond ends up on the Island, the Lostaways crash there, end up teaming up with The Others to battle Mittlewerk and co., Penny searches for Desmond, she finds where the Island is, goes there, Mittlewerk and Co. are defeated, everyone still alive is rescued having been redeemed and, in the final shots of the series, Penny is reunited with Desmond, “for love”.
But no! Let’s do bogus dream stuff and aliens and time warps and all that other sci-fi crap.

I’m a King fan, but that would be the single worst ending ever.
1) “It’s all a dream/hallucination” has been done to death.
2) It’s been speculated by tons of fans already.

i beliebe one of the creators (maybe lindeloff i cant remember) said that the biggst clue of all was in the pilot but noone will spot it until you have seen the grand finale.
Kings ending is the worst possible way to end lost but luckily it has alreasy been stated many times that this is not how lost will end, the creators have got a grand scheme and the finale has already been written.
as for seasin 3 being a mess, well it may seem that way but rest assured it will all come together towards the end (around about episode 18 to be specific!)
