Lost Moments - Thoughts on Daybreak
First of all, I don’t consider “Groundhogs Day” to be the origin of the “do-over” story… I look back to the philosophical theory of eternal recurrence. To me, the Bill Murray movie and Day Break are two variations on the same theme, which neither of them owns. The most widely publicized musings on this come from Nietzsche, but there are a couple of religious parables that would predate the famed philosopher’s musings that could bare some scrutiny in this controversy as well.
I get irritated quickly with the snot-nosed sophomoric assumption that all important concepts in art and literature occurred in the last thirty years; believe me, most modern writers of “cutting-edge” sci-fi and fantasy wouldn’t even be considered students in the days of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. We exist in an artistic dark ages where our increasing narrow-mindedness - and propensity to sniff out the plagiarists instead of accept a work as a clever homage - has blinded us to the foundations of these ideas and stories we so egotistically brand works of “genius”.
I digress. (And not very nicely, I know.) Day Break is good. Thoroughly enjoyable, and enough of an embellishment of the concept of eternal recurrence to pretty much blow any memories of “Groundhogs Day” our of consideration within the first hour. It was far more enjoyable then I thought it would be, for sure. Excellent acting, clever writing, and fantastic production values. It’s no replacement for LOST, but it’s an enjoyable diversion in the meantime.
Now, onto the news LOST fans want to know about. The first “LOST” moment. Please god, put the head of ABC’s marketing department’s neck in my hands… just for a moment. This is a scene we saw last week in the preview for the second half of the mini! Yes, it’s cut a little looser… but we saw 100% of the gist of this scene last week. So already the promise of never before seen footage is out the fricken window. And worse yet, they do count the lead in and lead out narration of the clip into the 30 seconds. So look more for something in the neighborhood of 15 seconds.
Without further ado… Here is the clip. I hope you enjoy it… the clip is encoded with DIVX.

If your viewing on a Mac on Safari you hear a VERY loud noise when playing this video. It’s not determined by the volume control and it’s certainly caused by that embedded video.
Embed a proper player please :/

It’s funny seeing Desmond running to Charlie in a different direction in the second part of the clip

I’m not a cardmember and I just watched it again
Looks like Sawyer goes with Kate, which we figured. Think I saw Alex running too. Would make sense that she helps them.
I wonder what Desmond did to have Charlie flip out like that…

Doc,
I agree about Day Break…It should hold LOST fans attention for the next several weeks. It’s got the same sort of shadowy conspiracy as LOST and just as many characters. The down side is that they were all introduced at once. This show definitely has a LOT more action than The Nine and it should also draw some interest from 24 fans. Besides, it’s a 12 week commitment and the mystery will be solved. we just put in 6 weeks with LOST and got only a few answers. We can do 12 standing on our heads!

This site is great and your comments about recycled story plots is so true … didn’t someone write that there’s really only 10 or so “plots” that have been reused by writers over the centuries. LOST’s writers have admitted their fondness of Dickens and Stephen King.
Anyway … I know this may be esoteric to some: The ABC promos and marketing campaign. I read *so many* comments from people who express being let down or feeling over-hyped or some similar feeling that ABC is not living up to the hype … My two cents on this: I simply ignore it. LOL!! Just ignore it. There’s a wise saying that goes something like this: MY LEVEL OF SERENITY IS IN PROPORTION TO MY EXPECTATIONS. Therefore, if you lower your expectations, then you will have less of a loss of serenity over ABC’s promos. Television marketers do their job: HYPE THE SHOW. If you believe the hype, then you will be disappointed. Remember, LOST is simply a television show. It’s well-written and contains characters that we all love. If you ignore the promos and the hype and remember that THE SHOW is what we all love, then your level of serenity will be much better!
Thanks for everything you do here.
