LOST Season Three DeathWatch
With the report that a death will come sometime before episode thirteen, (See Grim Reaper Stalking LOST Set), I decided to make a top ten list. From least likely to most likely:
10. Jack — Maybe ten is a reach, as Matthew Fox does have a blossoming movie career. Dissapear, maybe. Die? Nah. If there is a chance of a big screen LOST finale, as there seems to be, Fox will want to be involved.
9. Desmond — C’mon, he’s just getting started! It would be a little too tragic to let Desmond buy it before Penny finds the island.
8. Locke — LOST without Locke is like Star Wars (the prequels) without Obi-Wan. Just aint gonna happen. Besides, with season three there is the indication that Locke will again find destiny waiting on the island.
7. Charlie — Too obvious. Charlie has not developed at a good enough clip. He’s sort of a wall-flower. To kill off Charlie would just be anti-climatic.
6. Claire — Again, would it send shock-waves through the LOST community? Not really.
5. Hurley — We’re getting warmer. I could actually see this happen. Why? Talk about igniting a fan fire-storm! Hurley’s death would bring people out of the wood-works. I can see the petitions now.
4. Danielle — Yes, she is not a regular. But the death doesn’t have to be a regular. And the fact that she has been there long enough to know more than she is letting on is just too frustrating for fans. What better way to keep us baited then cut that line of info off before it starts to spill?
3. Sawyer — Kate is going to make a choice. If it is Sawyer, there could be tragic circumstance to follow. This is LOST, if a relationship forms it’s not going to be without some sort of tragedy.
2. Kate — In real life Evangaline struggles with fame and has found love on the cast. It’s concievable she would ASK to be let go to take her purse of LOST earnings and sit on the side line preparing a love nest while her other half continues to rake in big tv bucks.
1. Sayid — Yup. I call Sayid. I’ve called Sayid before, and I’m calling him again. Why? His story is told. Why more? Because he gives an advantage to the losties. Why even more? Naveen Andrews is not the type of actor who takes well to type-casting, and his much publicized personal struggles are mostly linked to distance issues. No LOST, no Hawaii, no distance issues. Further more, Andrews, like Fox, has landed some pretty cool big screen roles for the upcoming season: first alongside Jodi Foster, then in the Robert Rodriguez lensed "Grind House", co-directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Sayid’s story has absolutely not been told. In the scene where Kate visits her father at the Army recruiting station, Sayid is seen on the TV being led away in handcuffs. This scene happens in 2001, after Sayid has left the Republican Guard. Sayid had some run-in with the law between his adventure with Kelvin during the Gulf War and the CIA gig just before the plane crash. There’s an untold story right there.
Even without that dangling thread, Sayid’s story has been “told” just as much as any other character’s story has been told (except Locke). The writers can always add more depth to a character, more key events in their life, or they can call it quits and say there’s nothing more to tell. As the argument is equally true for (almost) all characters, it’s irrelevant.

I agree with doc, I think it could be Sayid. While I don’t want any of them to die, I do think there’s not as much left of Sayid’s story to tell as there is of some of the other characters. I also feel that way about Charlie’s story, but I don’t think Charlie’s death would have as much impact. Also, Charlie sometimes provides comic relief so they might not want to get rid of him. I don’t agree with Kate and Sawyer being #2 & #3 in line though. I just can’t see them getting rid of Kate or Sawyer as they are such popular characters. I just hope it’s not Jack!!!

I’d say the most probably character to die is Rose. If the magnetism on the island was destroyed or changed in the S2 finale, Rose’s cancer might come back and kill her before episode 13.
Comment by Andreas — October 10, 2006 @ 9:39 pm
I agree about rose. I think the magnetism being gone will cause her cancer to come back. But where does that leave locke?
Comment by Phildo — October 10, 2006 @ 9:48 pm
I considered Rose, but that spoiler wound up being false so it is a who knows thing. Now with Locke, it would have been some repair so it just wouldn’t “un-repair”. With her, it may have just put her into a remission that was not yet complete. So once the force subsided, it went the other way.
Comment by DocArzt — October 10, 2006 @ 9:50 pm
um..well lets see. there are a lot of things to think about. I agree about Sayid. He’s always in everything. He’s always apart of the adventures. eventually that is what is going to kill him. I dont think he is going to die soon though, we still have some things to figure out about him. But once we do, he’s off. Locke and Rose are pretty much in the same situation. They both have been “healed” by the magnetism, but since that has blown up i think whatever “healing” was going on is done with. One of the other is going to get sick, and then which ever one is left standing isn’t far behind.

I had this discussion with a friend the other day, and I too called Sayid. His story like you said, has been told. Also he’s important enough that it would be a shock.
Danielle I could see too, for some reason I imagine to add more to it, her death would be very violent. While her death alone would be a small shock, I think it’s a fairly easy way to add shock if it’s a really violent and sudden death, or reveal of her death.
Comment by Ross — October 11, 2006 @ 1:11 am
Sayid is by far my favorite character. I would be hard pressed to maintain an interest in the show if he were to be killed. While I agree that one could concievably leave Sayid’s story alone as is, and it wouldn’t feel like there were any major gaping holes, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t add tremendously to the show. The value he brings is not only (or even mostly) dependent on how much back story he has left. He’s an enormously dynamic and intense character and one of the finest actors on the series. More back story can be scripted, but there isn’t going to be another Sayid. If he were to be killed for “dramatic impact” (think Libby) I think it would be an enormously short-sighted move on the part of the writers. If he chose to leave for personal reasons, well, then I would miss what he added to the show tremendously. If there is anyone who I would like to see stay, it is Sayid.
Comment by Bunny Suction — October 11, 2006 @ 1:19 am
There’s a couple people it seems like you forgot to consider, like Mr. Eko, Rose and why not some of the others? Like Pickett, Tom Friendly, Juliet (Not likely) or Benry (Possible due to Sayid hating him, albeit a disappointing way to end the character)?
Comment by Naps — October 11, 2006 @ 5:37 am
Jin (or Sun) would be my guess.
Comment by PZ — October 11, 2006 @ 10:57 am
I think Sun is going to lose her baby. I read somewhere that two people close to Sun (in different ways) are going to die. My opinion is Jae-Lee and Sun’s baby. I know they said we would find out who the father was but that could be done in a flashback. And do they really want another pregnant character on the show for very long?
Comment by Phildo — October 11, 2006 @ 1:43 pm
I agree Sayid is up for the “deathwatch” although its stupid considering Shannon died, it wud b 2 stupid to allow Sayid to die, I think personally Sun or Jin; Come on Tradegy or wat? Sun’s pregnant and Jin mite not b the father it wud b sad if he doesn’t ever find out he is the father, especially if he died doin something for Sayid like their little plan goin on to save Jack, Kate and Sawyer, Sayid wud have guilt imprinted on his forehead!
Comment by Lewis Peters — October 11, 2006 @ 2:10 pm
I think it’s Kate.
A month or so ago, Kristen of E-Entertainment said that either a) one of the major female characters (other than Sun) is pregnant, or b) one of the major actresses is pregnant. She said one is true but wouldn’t say which. I’m betting it’s the latter and I’m betting it’s Evangeline.
IF that is the case, there is no way the writers could write around the pregnancy, given the slow rate of time on this series. Likewise, Evangeline has stated in interviews that she eventually wants to get out of acting altogether and start a family. Soon.
ALSO, Evangeline’s flashback ep is the last one in sweeps, which is supposed to end in a big cliffhanger.
ALSO, the writers have said Kate is going to choose between Jack and Sawyer in the next few episodes, thus wrapping up a major aspect of her character.
ALSO, they are about to introduce a bunch of new female characters (including Juliet, a new love interest for Jack). Sounds like they are preparing for the loss of a female character.
Much as I hate to say it, I think Kate is gone.
Comment by ForgedIrony — October 11, 2006 @ 2:29 pm
ForgedIrony, you know your stuff. Evangeline is a gonner. I’m sad about that because she’s hot. But I think LOST goes on without her.
Comment by JoefromUtah — October 11, 2006 @ 3:49 pm
Never really liked Kate that much anyway, just sucks for Sawyer who I’ve been rooting for, for awhile.
Comment by Naps — October 11, 2006 @ 4:57 pm
Didn’t Desmond (ninth most likley) die when he pressed the self destruct button on the hatch because of the giant magnet
Comment by Brynn — October 11, 2006 @ 5:38 pm
Sayid and Locke.. to me.. are far and away the best parts of the show. Losing Sayid would drop my interest in the show.
I don’t care much for Jack, Sawyer or Kate…. I would not be troubled if they were to leave. However, I don’t see this happening.
Comment by Tom — October 12, 2006 @ 3:18 pm
All of my fave characters died in the show: Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia and Libby… I really disliked the deaths of Shannon and Libby (just because I want to know who she is!!!)… (made me happy 2 hear Libby will return in flashbacks)… but I dealed with it… so if they write a good story, (I LOVED abondoned), and they kill of a other major character it would suck, but I will get over it… again…
Killing kate of just doesnt seem right to me… I hope they dont kill her off… killing Danielle would suck, at least let her re-unite with alex before she bites the dust…killing Locke? NO WAY it wont be the same without him!
I also think Sayid is the next to go… sadly because I love his storyline… and its just a good written character… but we will see…
Comment by FrankEE — October 12, 2006 @ 6:30 pm
My vote is for Mr. Eko! I don’t think they will kill of any of the major (season 1) characters and so Eko seems to be on top of that list!
Comment by Indy — October 14, 2006 @ 4:54 pm
Yeah, I’ve been calling Sayid too. His story just isn’t as compelling as the others anymore.
Comment by Jem — October 14, 2006 @ 5:09 pm
I agree with Sayid also mostly because of the comments that Andrews has made about “moving on”. The loss of Sayid would sadden me because I have always thought that he was critical to their survival and eventual rescue. I do think that Eko should have been included in this list since, IMO, he is the next most likely character to go - and for largely the same reasons that you listed for SAyid.
Comment by Carmela — October 14, 2006 @ 5:55 pm
I’m thinking either Kate or Sun. Kate for all the reasons already mentioned. Sun? Well, again, do they really want another pregnancy played out on the island? I also think Sun’s story, with this last episode, is pretty well played through. It would also be a catastrophic event for Jin, adding drama to the show. I just don’t know about her losing the baby; I think they would be better off killing off the character (with a deathbed paternity confession?) somehow.
Comment by TVorNotTV — October 15, 2006 @ 6:39 pm
jack and kate and sawyer and sayid and hurley and locke—must stay!! Now if Charlie and Claire were killed off, so what? who would miss those two whining willies!!!
Comment by ladydiva — October 17, 2006 @ 5:01 am
If anyone on the show dies, I hope it’s HURLEY.
Sorry hurley fans, but I just don’t like him…
BUT I get a feeling, like so many of you, that it’s going to be Sayid.
Why does anyone have to die? *sigh* Too much death!!!
(Then again, I wasn’t sorry to see Ana-Lucia go, lol)
Comment by Erin — October 17, 2006 @ 8:00 pm
Sayid is one of my favorites!…. buuuttt I have to admit that I would like it if he was placed in a grave beside Shannon. Many other bloggers are calling Sawyer, and I would be more bummed about Sawyer than Sayid.
Furthermore, I HATE Sawyer and Kate together. I LOVE Sawyer, just not with Kate. Too obvious.
Comment by Elisha — October 19, 2006 @ 6:22 am
Here in Honolulu the rumor is that Sawyer is going to bite it.
Comment by Marshall Field — October 20, 2006 @ 5:22 am
They can kill off anyone, i mean anna lucia and libby, what about the the bomb expert history teacher eh, though i personally think its rose, why the islands losing it magnectics forcefeild and the cancer gonna come back nf get her. though i definatly thinks it NOT jack kate locke or sawyer they still ahve a background story to tell sayid also, there could be more to him then a torturer something you didn’t really expect.
Comment by henna — October 21, 2006 @ 9:55 am
Rose and Locke are not necessarily in danger of losing the island’s magnetic/healing qualities just because the hatch blew up. The island has had unique magnetic qualities for centuries. The fail safe button was only created a couple of decades ago. So, even though the hatch imploded, the island remains uniquely magnetized.
Comment by lost and back again — October 24, 2006 @ 12:06 pm
I vote Mr. Eko… His flashback is the next one up, and I feel his story’s arc - as well as his life- will come to an end!!
Comment by Patrick — October 26, 2006 @ 5:01 am
Jack,Kate, Sawyer will not be killed off there is more to learn about them we only know half the story. And anyway why killone the three best characters it is plain stupid i mean c’ mon kill Jack or Kate or Sawyer half the viewers will loose interest.
