Lost Producers successfully foil the spoilers
The battle between LOST producers and that faction of entertainment media known as "spoilers" has been epic! In the beginning, loose lips leaked major plot lines with exhuberance. Kristin and Ausiello, to name a few, were ready willing and able to drop their goods at the drop of a hat. Then, something strange happened. Suddenly Kristin and company are getting set visits, munchy bags, personal cell phone numbers, all of a sudden the spoilers start getting more vague, and more vague until…
Meet the press of the internet’s 3rd world. Suddenly message boards like televisionwithoutpity, 4815162342, thetailsection (yes, moi), and abc’s own message boards became the hot place to look for spoilers. Using a combination of wits, skilled conjecture, and friend of friend networking, we all became the source for exclusive spoilers. But alas, yet another era has come to an end.
It is my sad duty to report to you that most of what you have heard about season three is the result of a purposeful campaign by LOST’s production staff to keep season three’s secrets safe. I have it on good authority that only roughly 2-3 spoilers are in existence right now that bare any resemblance to the truth, which really isn’t saying much. No boxes of cookies, set visits, or the occasional phone call involved, just flat out spoiler guerilla war-fare. The LOST producers plugged all the leaks and poisened the waters. Our high-tech voodoo of spoiler research will no longer bare any fruit.
But I ask you folks, isn’t it all for the better? Really? Don’t you want to be surprised? Spoiler nuts know that sinking feeling of tuning in at 9/8c on Wednesdays knowing there won’t be a single surprise in store for you. Hoping that somebody missed something. Well, thanks to some expert anti-intelligence, if you can keep yourself away from the spoilers over the next few weeks, that sinking feeling will be a thing of the past. At least for now.

i for one, amy pretty damn happy the spoilers turned out to be foilers. many congratulations to the show’s producers!

I’ve just looked at the spoilers as additional memoriablia (is that right?). I don’t read them to “spoil” an episode. I read them because I can’t wait for an episode. Lost still manages to surpise and entertain primarily because of the vagueness of the spoilers.

As I’m sure you know, I really don’t like spoilers and over at lostblog.net we don’t post them. If all of the major sites in the community decided not to post spoilers, wouldn’t it be great?
I really agree that watching the show is way more fun when you don’t know what will happen before it does. Mystery and surprise is a large part of what makes Lost so great.
If the writers don’t want us to read spoilers, shouldn’t we respect the show instead of trying to “cheat”?

Doc, my man I agree completely… I read spoilers, but I also go out of my way to make sure that I don’t read recaps or anything before the ep airs. Being surprised makes “Lost” even better. I had no clue about Desmond before the premiere last season and that opening scene made me pee myself a little.

If I may ask, what are the Season 3 spoilers that have turned out to be foilers? I don’t think I’ve really read any, besides for the really brief episode descriptions (Claire-centric, etc.). I’m sure they have some over at spoilerfix or whatever, but could somebody just name a few?

I think ABC’s only mistake was that they had it revealed that they had been feeding the spoiler sources lies all that time. That should have been a revelation revealed AFTER the new shows started ariring and we found out we were all wrong.

While of course I agree that knowing EVERYTHING that happens beforehand kinda makes the show itself pointless, at the same time, I think every fan should have the opportunity to BE a fan in his/her own way. Everyone always has a choice (unless the spoiler is terribly labeled as such) whether or not to read spoilers. Further, I don’t feel that most spoilers truly “spoil” because I really enjoy seeing HOW they do what I hear is going to happen. For example, I did happen to know that there’d be a “man in the hatch”–but it was so cool meeting that man, seeing the camera work/music choices/episode context of that introduction…I heard Shannon was going to die–I did not know it’d be at the hand of Ana Lucia. Spoiling can really pique curiosity–and it’s that very thing that has kept me being a lost fan (as opposed to having no spoilers at all and then getting really frustrated at the show’s poopy airing schedule last year and not watching). The show’s producers shouldn’t play mind games with us–that’s what the Lost Experience is for, lol–but seriously, we can only take so much teasing and waiting and fakeouts and summer hiatuses before we lose faith that we’ll ever get any truth. They should guarantee at least a little for us, whoever wants it, somewhere.

Personally, no spoiler has ever made me tune out. So in my mind, assuming a lot of fans are like me, this effort is kind of pointless. Whether or not the knowledge of what is going to happen is going to impact your enjoyment of the show, that is absolutely personal philosophy. I think the best spoilers are the ones that give you enough information to get you interested; kinda like the trailers.

Did anyone see that clip of Lost Season 3 last night on ABC? It had Sawyer in an animal cage, and the new Brazilian guy in a cage next to him. IT was pretty amazing.
Comment by Brinson — September 14, 2006 @ 1:10 pm
Brinson - Yes, i saw the clip you speak of, but I don’t think you SAW what you think. That man wasn’t brazilian. He was as American as apple pie and baseball. look here:

Rodrigo doesn’t join the cast until the second pod (at least that’s what they’ve said…)

I read this and just started cracking up.
ABC, you damn conniving producers. That was a damn bloody well played hand, leading everyone with the spoilers… props.

glittersaturn, I have to disagree with you.
According to that logic, why don’t the producers of “Lost” just put the scripts to upcoming episodes on the Internet? And if the fans want to “be fans in their own way,” they can choose to read those scripts, or they can choose not to. But it will be THEIR choice.
Some fans like reading spoilers. But I completely understand why producers don’t want us to know them. Not knowing HOW Ana-Lucia dies until it happens is one thing. Not knowing she dies at all until it happens is something completely different. The speculating is fun, but I don’t mind this one bit.

I’m glad they aren’t giving us real spoilers. It’s like Locke keeping the heroine from Charlie, just without us being able to ask three times to get spoilers…
Comment by Nathaniel White — September 15, 2006 @ 2:10 am
You mean Jack’s dad isn’t alive on the island as head of surgery for the Others? It’s not all Hurley’s dream? Kate isn’t going to choose Henry?
Comment by Maurice Tift — September 15, 2006 @ 11:45 am
And how do we know this isn’t just a stunt by the producers to throw us off all the spoilers we have heard??
Comment by Anonomoose — September 16, 2006 @ 4:31 pm
LOL….Treble bluffing. Let all just wait until it airs, and then we will all see the truth. Makes it more exciting tho, eh!
Comment by TruBluffer — September 17, 2006 @ 11:34 am
Why don’t I believe this??????????????????
Comment by Lori — September 18, 2006 @ 3:17 pm
If I read spoilers, I usually forget and still get blown away during an episode. So it dosn’t really matter to me
Comment by g-c — September 18, 2006 @ 11:10 pm
How about the layout of the episodes for next season? Still the 3 month hiatus? No mini cliff-hanger coming? No resolution to the going-on-three-seasons love triangle? I was definitely excited about some of the spoilers that have been coming out, so can’t we just pretend like we’re being “spoiled” and continue to discuss possibly meaningless tidbits until our show comes back on? Please?
